Journey, Not A Destination

hey there handsome. came today in search of a motivation :)
how are you? how are things?

Sorry, not much motivation in here as of late... I'm barely keeping this place above water (as in my journal). Schedule has been a little nutty.

Good to see ya Lena. :)

Nice videos - need some of you guys showing off more - its fun! :D

Thanks Liz!

We need to get out entire database done of instructional videos before we can start focusing on the fun stuff. But I look forward to the time where we can put together those kinds of things.

Wow am I happy today is Friday. The was a gruelling week and this weekend isn't going to be much different considering all the packing I must do. But at least it's a change and it's working towards something cool.

I've been completely lax with my training and about 80% with my nutrition. I've just been too bogged down. I've been in the gym once this week. I might get in there again tonight.

Trying to maintain what little I've gained since I started my bulk but until I'm in the house and situated and until work chills out a bit... it's going to be difficult.

I'm trying to find a balance at the moment and if maintenance is what's needed for balance to be had... so be it.

I've been staying up late and reading. I go through kicks where I refuse to sleep until I read a shit ton. Right now I'm re-reading (something I do quite often) Science and Practice of Strength Training and Mike Boyle's book.... can't remember the name of it at the moment... something like Designing Training Facilities and Programs.

Hope everyone is well.

Harder unfortunately.

I'm putting some thought into changing gyms although my options are limited. A brand new gym was built in the area. It opened a couple of weeks ago. I haven't even seen it yet but the price is more than half off what I'm paying now. I like the gym I'm in now but I don't love it. It's the nicest gym I've seen but it's a bit too yuppy-ish for me. This new gym probably isn't much different, just not as nice. It's a Planet Fitness. Anyone train at one of these?

too yuppy-ish lol you love being all rough around the edges

Hello and Happy Friday!

I don't know much about planet fitness other than its really inexpensive [edit: inexpensive compared to other gyms in this area] and offers a "judement fee" atmosphere whatever that might mean. I checked out the website a while back because one recently opened in my area. I was more interested in employment more than anything... Sorry I can't be of more help.

I would assume you could check it out for a day or two as a trial and decide from there.

When it comes to the gym... I much prefer the rough, old school persona.

Why?

I can count on my digits how many 'yuppies' I've seen lifting correctly. By yuppy, I mean the guys who care more about whether or not their shorts, sneakers, shirt, under-shirt, watch, socks, and head band match than they do about training and improving. They care more about making sure they don't get dirty from bar rust than they do about strength.

And they never..... ever, ever, ever, ever go into a squat rack.

This last bit is a double edge sword. On one hand it's great b/c I never have to worry about someone being in my way as I do most of my training inside a squat rack.

On the other hand though, it's annoying as all hell seeing guys who think their shit doesn't stink flex in a mirror with a look on their face as if they just battled in the gladiator arena after doing a couple of bicep curls while sitting on a stability ball.

There are days where I'd rather fight a crowd than be subjected to seeing such stupidity.

Judgement free atmosphere, lol.

Not after I come there.

Just kidding!

But quite sure most any gym is going to tout itself as having that. I care more about promimity and having enough squat racks and barbells to keep me busy.

Steve,
I belong to a Planet Fitness. My opinion is that it is no frills. Mine is 5 minutes from work which allows me to work out at lunch. (this is very important to me because it doesnt cut into time with my kids at home). Here comes the no frills part; no squat rack, no classes, no steam rooms, saunas and even no scale.

With that being said, i do use a combo of free weights and machines and feel i get a good workout for what my goals are. I have never waited for a machine because it is too crowded. i pay 19.99 a month which allows me to use any PF so i can use the one not near work or when im travelling.

No interest in building a gym at your house?

Matt

Wow.

No squat rack.

That goes against every fiber of what I believe to be appropriate in terms of training. I'll stop in to make sure that's the case with this new one they put up, but if it is I most definitely won't be signing up.

That's very disheartening to hear when you factor in the data I saw recently highlighting how PF is one of the top 1000 or 5000 business in the U.S. right now.

Sounds like they're simply spreading the bad word indirectly.

FYI, if I were to build my own gym, which might happen if Gordy (my partner) and I ever get our business grown to a point that makes it possible, there will be enough squat racks and power stations to train a team of athletes. Seems crazy when you're used to the standard gym today but that's actually how far off these businesses (I won't even call them gyms) are.

I could build a gym on my property but it would require me to either knock down some trees which I'm not fond of or convert a heated workshop that's existing on the property into a gym and I'm not fond of that either.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

I sometimes refer PF to curves for men. It gets better, like it was said it is a no judgement zone. They have a siren on the wall that they light up if you get out of line. ie. drop weights, grunt when lifting or stuff like that. Their dumbells only go up to 85 lbs. If it wasnt so damn convient i wouldnt be there. Google PF some time and you will read some funny stuff.

Holy shit, you have got to be shitting me!

I wouldn't last there.

Not that I'm some meat head that goes around grunting.

But when I'm deadlifting a few hundred pounds, the last thing I want to do is set the weight down lightly. I'm sure they'd rather I blow my back out than god forbid bang weights off their precious floor.

To boot, I can't squat without a squat rack so it's out anyhow.

The day some twerp behind a gym desk turns a siren on AT me is the day I go to jail for punting someone over a bathroom stall door and giving them a swirlie.

Where do I sign up for the show?

Wow, I'm really disappointed to be honest. I was really banking on that place coming through as my solution to the move. I've already trialed other gyms in the area with no success. I admit I have high standards but my options aren't even good enough to settle for.

Here's what happend a year or so ago between a gym owner in the area and me via email after I trialed his gym:

Man, I am behind.

Thanks Melissa... things are going. Time is moving sloooowwwlllyyyy. This weekend will be nothing but packing and then the move will be here before I know it. :)

I've always hated moving...but when I bought my house a few years back it was refreshing to know that I wouldn't have to move for a while. I finally feel settled and content.

I'm sure it will be exhausting, but hopefully exciting at the same time.

Well that was a tiring weekend to say the least. I never realized how much a pain in the ass packing is or how much shit we accumulate over the years.

I'm living out of boxes at the moment and it isn't fun.

Pretty much the entire weekend was spent packing except for the time I took off to watch the Eagles f-ing tie the Bengals. Unbelievable.

Yea, I thought he was joking but now I'm not so sure. It's not something that happens often and I think it's stupid. They should play until there is a clear winner.

Isn't it amazing how much stuff you accumulate? I remember when I moved out of a 1 bedroom apartment and loaded up the big ass u-haul. I had to make 2 trips...how did all that crap fit in my tiny apartment? Dunno...but it is times like that, that make you realize how lucky we are here in America. We do have too much crap. When I look at my closet or my garage I sometimes feel guilty. All this stuff and most of it I don't even need. It's time to start donating more...

I have stuff in boxes in my garage that I never unpacked. I couldn't even tell you what's in them now...another reason to donate. I heard that reducing clutter is a good stress relief. I am gonna try that.

Despite the endless sea of boxes I hope you are enjoying your new place!
