Journey, Not A Destination

Yea, simple carbs are fine post workout. It's really hair splitting though... just be sure to get some carbs and more importantly some protein right after. I normally down a shake with some kind of carb powder and some whey immediately after then, about an hour after that I have a whole food meal.

Sounds like you're on the right track.

sweet man, appreciate it.

How is the site coming? I cant wait for it to be up and running, seems like its going to be very very helpful, and then of course i wont have to ask you a million questions, lol.

Would a whey blend with carbs work as a good source of carbs? I tend to use a blend instead of an isolate (I don't mind the fat/carbs that come with blends). I also add a banana for the real CARB, but is the shake alone enough? I would think it isn't the best source (maybe 4 carbs per serving? 2 grams of fat too).

The site is coming along, slowly but surely.

You can check it out at . A vast majority of it is still under construction... or not viewable to the public yet.

However, the blog is up and running, of which you should check out.

You actually want to minimize fat as much as possible immediately PWO. It slows down absorption which goes directly against why people hold post workout nutrition in such high regard; the increased uptake/sensitivity of the various tissues associated with strength training.

It's the ideal time to partition your calories to the good places instead of the bad, so we don't want fat slowing that down.

I don't really like getting into the nuances of post workout nutrition simply b/c people tend to think it makes or break progress from the gym. It certainly does not. If calories and macros are in check, that is more than enough.

PWO nutrition simply offers a bit of fine 'tunability' to your nutrition, is all.

In general, carbs aren't even that important PWO unless your training significantly depletes glycogen stores. The less you're doing in terms of volume in a workout and the more you're eating, the less relevant pwo carb intake becomes.

As a very general rule if one is interested in hair splitting, I suggest eating a balanced meal an hour or two before hitting the weights. It should have roughly equal amounts of protein and carbs. Fats are fine too.

I choose to drink a during/post workout shake, which simply means half is sipped throughout my training and the other half is finished off immediately after. How many carbs to protein in this really depends on my state in terms of dieting or bulking and carb intake. 2:1 p/c is generally fine with as little fat as possible, if any.

Then I eat my next scheduled meal about 60-90 minutes after that which is a full blown, balanced meal generally high in starchy carbs.

Frankly, I am of the opinion that pre workout nutrition is much more important than post in most instances.

Interesting stuff... I have always used Blend Whey Protein (with the minimal fat content 1 g per scoop and the 4 grams of carbs). Maybe I should move towards an isolate with less of that crap in it. I should also avoid those South Beach bars that have 20 grams of protein but 7 grams of fat (26 grams of carbs but with the 17 sugar alcohols + 6 grams of fiber, net carbs are closer to 3). Isolate is def more expensive but maybe worth it in terms of payoff.

What's happening man... been a while!

Yea, pullups are one of those things I've always been good at naturally. I remember back in grade school it was always a competition between me and my best friend to see who could do the most in the school. It was part of the presidential physical fitness testing or whatever they call that. I wonder if they still make kids do this?

It has been a while, I've been really busy lately.

I'm the opposite, I've always been horrible at pull-ups. I know what you're talking about with the presidential thing, I have no idea if they still do that or not. I would always end up with one or two struggling pull-ups, heh. Oh well, as the weight goes down and the strength goes up, I'm sure I'll get there. Right now I'm using that assisted pull-up machine. Pull-ups are a great exercise and I can't wait to be able to bust em out!

Heh... at least you could get a pull up in high school. My first pull up (unassisted) came at the age of 27.

I'm a fan of eccentrics with pullups too. Put a box or chair under the bar and help yourself up and then come down slowly and controlled since we are stronger eccentrically than we are concentrically.

I just noticed that this stuff is actually BLEND not isolate. Interesting. What flavors do you recommend? Do you have any coupons for them?

I bought the variety pack. Maybe I'll fall into something I like... also got 10% off. Thanks for the heads up, I'll let you know.

I don't have any coupons but right now I'm loving their vanilla ice cream flavor.

I use them simply b/c they deliver next day and I always wait until the last minute to order my whey.

I've also enjoyed their chocolate... I usually end up ordering a tub of each.

Do you order by the lb or 5lb?

* Banana Cream
* Caramel Toffee Fudge
* Chocolate Malt
* Chocolate Mint
* Cookies & Cream
* Delicious Strawberry
* Double Rich Chocolate
* Extreme Milk Chocolate
* French Vanilla Creme
* Mocha Cappuccino
* Orange Cream
* Rocky Road
* Root Beer Float
* Strawberry Banana
* Tropical Punch
* Vanilla Ice Cream

Those are the flavors I am REALLY interested in. Fruity stuff not so much... I like to think I am drinking milkshakes when I drink these. What do you mix it with? Water or Milk? with or without ice?

I just buy the 5 lb jugs right now. I have ordered by the pound before though.

I'm with you... the fruity stuff makes me sick. Not really, but I don't like it. I lived on chocolate for a long, long time and never noticed the vanilla milk shake flavor. I ordered it for shits and giggles and have been in love for about a month. I might just be the newness and change of pace relative to the chocolate, but it's good stuff.

My during/post workout shake I currently mix with water and some carbs.

When I'm bulking, I generally always mix with milk, just b/c I like the calories and it tastes so much better.

When cutting, I generally use water.

My morning shake that I have just about every day at the moment is simply:

1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup yogurt
1 tblspn natty pb
1 scoop whey
1 frozen banana
2 ice cubes

Blend to a smooth texture and presto... perfect way to start off your day!

350-400 cals. Not bad at all for a wake me up.

I have been trying to perfect my blend with water. It's hard... so I have been sucking it up and using 40 calories for skim milk and its been working very well.

I like using frozen bananas too... makes consistency that much easier to handle as a shake.
