Jill's diary

ok, im reading this book about the glycemic index, it makes sooooo much sense, has anyone heard of it?

Its when you have wayyyyyyyy too many high gylcemic carbs and yoou could even be low on your calories and exercising like crazy, but if you dont balance your eating, you will GAIN WEIGHT!!!

..........your body keeps producing insulin and has to eat away at the high glycemic foods while your body stores FAT..... UGH

popcorn is high glycemic, as are baked potatoes in the microwave...BUT when you cook them in the oven, they are medium index! weird huh?

The book suggests you eat:

40% of your diet as carbs, 30% protein and 30% fat

Im going to try this....

I love learning about nutrition, I feel like a school girl! :sifone:

Hi Jilly, Yes I have heard about the Glycemic index. I too have a book about it from Prevention Magazine and it is very informative. I had gestational diabetes with my last two pregnancies so I am very interested in anything which can lower my insulin levels. I have been following a low glycemic diet and it has been working for me. I have an apple shape and I guess you could say I was pre-diabetic so refined carbs really effect my weight badly. I love reading about nutrition too, it really is empowering to take control of what goes into your body and view it as fuel. I like the idea that if you follow your meals with a salad that has a vinegar (preferable apple cider ) type dressing , it can lower your insulin level by up to 30%!!! Isn't that incredible!! Sounds like you have a great plan to help drop pounds!
GO BLUE!!!!

I really need to get back onto my no sugar flour and wheat plan for these reasons:

1. when i do avoid these things, i WANT to eat healthy

when I dont, I dont care... its weird

2. I shouldve guessed trouble when I went back to my very first post about my sugar, flour and wheat free diet when I changed it...ok, I went back and fixed it

RE the glycemic index, I aim to make my proteins higher than my fat and carb calories. It rarely happens--the carbs are almost always slightly higher, but it keeps my carbs under control.

As to the the no flour or wheat ban, I wouldn't do that b/c you're taking out whole grains that are good for you and packed with fiber. I get this aunt millie's 12 grain bread that fits that bill. You can also get some whole grain pastas. Just keep track of your carbs and don't eat more than a set amount. :)

I wish I could just stop....I guess thats where my addiction to food comes in!!!

Jillzy, I really relate to your dismay and the way a switch in your foods seems to change your desires, because I am the same way. I eat complex carbohydrates in a balanced way but I treat anything with refined sugars in it with a lot of suspicion because I know how dangerous they can be for me.

I don't know what your stop button is - I don't even know anything guaranteed for myself - but I've just recently been in a similar situation and these things I personally found helpful.

Continuing to believe that a big part of myself was trying to turn back towards a healthier pattern. Having faith in that part.
Trying again, even though I had to keep trying again.
Continuing to identify triggers and avoiding them.
Remembering that this isn't just about eating, it's about feeling good about myself and making my life work properly.
Remembering that "Fuck it's" are temporary. Life and weight and food will still have to be dealt with and will be easier now than after a "fuck it".
Coming back to the forum repeatedly.

Also, for me, writing is helpful, and exercise is helpful.

I'm glad you are on your daughter's Facebook and sorry that your mum coming stresses you. The longer you can continue to eat well, the better you will cope with hard times. I was told once that a half hour brisk walk would help me cope at the equivalent level of one anti-depressant tablet. I don't know if that's exactly true - I've never had the tablets - but it does seem to help a whole lot. Even though after 10-15 minutes I sometimes start thinking "bah humbug it's not working today" after 45 minutes I'm always better off than when I started.

EDIT: Also, I feel for you about your home computer troubles. That is another toughie - makes the other issues more difficult I bet.

I just remembered you said something about what to put on salad? But you also said something about cider vinegar? I haven't tried it - how would that taste by itself as a dressing, or used to cut the oil so you use less oil? At my house I sometimes use just a very little balsamic vinegar as a dressing - no oil at all. My friends and everyone at my house seem to like it. I used to use a prepared low cal Italian from the supermarket too. Or there is a low fat French onion dip we can get that I sometimes just use a little of with whole pieces of salad veges.

Great advice there from Felici. :) One thing I've noticed is that you seem to feel that you must eat perfectly all the time or you've failed. That's not true at all. No one is perfect, and it's natural that you'll endulge yourself once in awhile. The trick is to make it the exception rather than the rule. YOu can still eat those things, just learn moderation--or eat a whole bag of chips, just do it once a month, and eat well most of the time. There is no way I'd ever give up all the yummy foods I love. There's no need to--just learn control. My dad's like that. He's either on the wagon or entirely off it. There's no happy medium. If you can master the happy medium, you'll go very far. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. :) I eat foods that would be considered very naughty if eaten in large quantities all the time--I just eat a little. Today I had a few tortilla chips with salsa, for example.

You might do better if you set aside one day a week to be a cheat day where you can eat as much of anythign you want. It gives you something to look forward to, and could help keep you on track the other days b/c you know you can eat *insert food here* on your cheat day. :)

Jillzy honey, I'm here for you. It's really okay to have screwed up. All you have to do now is pick yourself back up, dust yourself off and try harder this time to make it right.

If you think a diet free of wheat, flour and sugar will/is working for you, definitely get back on it. I wish I could be as determined as you and remove sugar completely from my food plan, but I fear the repercussion if I do. The way I see it, everything in moderation won't kill me. It's cutting it out completely and/or binging on it that kills my intentions to be skinny.

This happens to the best of us, chica. Don't let it get to you. I trust you'll do better! And don't worry about that scale, he's no good for you. LOL.

Happy Tuesday, honey!

Girl you are so close to onederland lets do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey gang! Im still here and alive, my weigh in was 207 even....

so ive kept 8 pounds off and gained 6....

not sure what im doing at the moment, and im signed up for all the contests, SORRY EVERYONE! I hate to mess with the team.

I KNOW in my heart I cant have sugar, flour, wheat.... alcohol, they ARE my triggers....

telling me to go ahead and have it is like telling an alcoholic that "just a little drink once in a while won't hurt"

I gotta get myself centered and ill be back xoxoxox

Love, Jill

Just checking in...with my thoughts...

thoughts: when I eat sugar, flour or wheat, I notice that I no longer want to eat healthy foods, like I ignore them completely

when I dont eat what I should have, healthy foods taste YUMMY, fruit tastes like candy, even green peppers taste like candy!

Ive been going to this food cupboard with a friend cause of my finances and they always give out TONS of bread, I have a freezer full.. my son opened it on day and said, "are we rich now, Mom?"

bagels and english muffins and breads... my weaknesses really are breads and cereals....

just making some notes for myself...

It's okay Jillzy, I can understand completely! When there is ice cream in my freezer, I can't stop myself! Just take it one day at a time, and don't let yourself fall for the temptation.

I know what you mean about eating right and how things taste when you do. It's funny you know, I've been eating nutritionally for such a long time now, that when my bro orders french fries or a milkshake, it doesn't even tempt me at all.

I hope you get to this point, eventually. I'd really like to see you succed in this. You deserve it for sure!

Thanks for letting us know you're alive, honey. It's good to see you around here.

I have those same cravings. I am a carb-aholic. lol. I hope you have a great week!! Its a great thing that you can clearly think about they way your mind and body react to different foods.

Im the same way with peanuts and peanut butter coated with chocolate.... but I think/hope ive had my fill!!

I get like that, too, If I dont have it, I dont want it, I want to get back there... I do I do.

I also need to work on my planning... my therapist says:

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail!
