IUD birth control screwed me over. so here i am.

Wow, so it really happens then. Even though it does not have any hormones, it could cause you to gain weight? I wish you luck Leydam. Let us know how it will progress. Thanks. This is an enlightening post for me.

you know when you get used to something and so it feels absolutely normal , and once it stops youre like wow, i was just used to it, i feel so relieved now?!

thats exactly how i felt yesterday when i got it removed. it was very quick, and when i stood up i felt so good, like i had gotten used to something that at some point was a real discomfort.

im starting at gym again this week , getting my new membership at a different gym , and i will be going twice a day , once before school, and once after work .

i will post any progress,

wish me luck!

Hey y'all,
I just wanted to point out that those of you saying that a 'copper device is impossible to put on weight because it doesn't have hormones' are deeply mislead. ANY foreign body that is inserted into you can cause ANY number of effects in ANY person. There is no hard and fast rule. We have NO idea what a copper device can do, other than the fact that it's a foreign body and your body system will react to it the way it deems necessary. However, I agree that IUD's shouldn't be used under 25 and before the first pregnancy.

Leydam, I see what you mean in your pictures: Your face is definitely more puffy than the before pictures. This is characteristic of hormone imbalances. I'm no doctor, but I am obtaining a degree in Bio-Medical Science, so I at least take courses in this crap. I just wanted to tell you that I notice the difference, so you don't think you're crazy! Also, you look MUCH happier and MUCH more confident in your befores. As someone with not as much weight to lose either, I can totally see where you're coming from and I wish you the best. Shame on anyone who is judging this girls weight-loss goals! If someone wants to come on here and lose THREE pounds, we should support them. The weight that someone wants to lose has no proportion to how badly they want to lose it, and how commited they truly are.

I hope you notice some changes after your IUD is removed!

just a little update.. its been out for a week and 2 days ..

everyone's been noticing a difference in my stomach and my waist, so im getting my shape back!

i havent been doing anything different either, just doing a cleanse right now, a herbal one from GNC. so far so good, im glad im losing weight!

hey guys!

I am in the same boat as well...

I was always slim! After I had my baby, i was back to size 4 and could fit in a pant size 2 but wouldn't button up.

then I put that IUD and within 10 days i jumped sizes pretty fast and was weraing a medium instead of a xs. And now I wear large.

I am sure it is the IUD because I never change my lifestyle.

leydam.

I have a question for you! Are you using birth control bills? I am planing to switch to birth control bills. and would like to know which ones are u using!

If you believe that it is the IUD that caused you to gain weight, birth control pills will have the same side effect, most of them worse than the IUD, due to the hormones contained. 'The Pill' is also supposedly increasing the risk of thrombosis by a large amount (and is linked to breast- and ovarian cancer), and a responsible doctor wouldn't prescribe them to anybody who is overweight. (I know most doctors do anyway simply because they don't care, that's why I put 'responsible').

Hey! I'm actually giving my body a break for some time and am using the old fashioned way (condoms) :x .

but i was talking to someone i met, she's a marathon runner and has always been very fit, who actually had the sameeee problem with the COPPER iud. i say "copper" in caps bc most people think it doesnt act like a hormone in your body, it does. lol. Well, she says she gained lots of weight and couldnt get any off, even with her training, which is very intense when youre preparing to run a 26.2 mile marathon like she did. Her weight didnt even budge. She took it out, and 6 months later, after lots of training, shes back to her normal weight. She recommends natural methods of birth control, im doing my research and will let you know what I come up with! lol

and good luckkkk on your weight loss!

All Ive done different is do a body cleanse program from gnc, the bloating is def going down.

thank goddd <333

i start my first personal training routineee today, wish me luck!

I take yaz, and I've actually lost weight...

I'm on YAZ too, and have lost nearly 45lbs now. I started dieting about a month after I went on the BC. I HAVE to be on a birth control because I have PCOS. I put a lot of my blame on the weight gain on it (a side effect is weight gain), but truthfully, I was just eating a LOT of crap food. Nothing was to blame aside from myself.

I have always been a healthy UK size 10-12 (6-8 US size i think) and since having the copper non hormonal IUD fitted i have gained a whole stone and a half. At first i thought it was because my metabolism slowed down-but my metabolism has always been fast and im naturally quite thin, so its weird that a month after having the device fitted i should gain so much weight-im excersising and eating healthy, walking alot more-so nature says i should lose weight right? Wrong! I am now around 160 pounds whereas 8 months ago i was around 145. Im sorry but i dont believe thats a coincidence. All the weight seems to be around my stomach area too-something echoed by many many posts i have read on the internt today.
I knw this device has no hormones in it-but surely it must be interfering in some way-after all it does stop you from getting pregnant so even though its not giving you synthetic hormones it must be interfering with my own hormones in some way-othrwise i would get pregnant right? and my periods are much lighter than they were b4-and theyre supposed to be heavier with the IUD. Wether the copper is interfering with my weight, or the IUD is messing up my own hormones, or the IUD is tricking my body intothinking its pregnant as mentioned, or whatever reason, i know for a fact that its made me gain weight-simple. Im going to have it removed in 7 days, ill let you know if i lose weigght and if my moods get better.

Hmmmm, I guess with every woman it's different. *shrugs* I would imagine, even with being on birth control, if you watched what you ate and exercised regularly you wouldn't gain weight.

A couple of years ago I lost 90lbs while I was on the depo shot, then I got off and got pregnant, here I am again- on depo, and have so far lost 95lbs. (I gained 96lbs while pregnant, had my son in April 2009) I also know many other women who lose weight while on any type of birth control. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't just fall of, they actually try.

copper IUD

I have read through all of the posts. And there are those on here who say there is no scientific backing to gaining weight while using the copper IUD. That is simply not true. First let's clear up something. The maufacturer of and the medical community have no definitive scientific or medical explanation as to precisely how the copper IOD prevents pregnancy. They know it stops eggs or fertilized eggs from implanting into the uterine linging, this due to the toxic environement it creates. In fact the toxic environment it creates can actually kill the egg and sperm whether or not fertilized.
Onto why some women may gain weight: copper allergy reaction includes bloating and edema - which can feel similar to a urinary track infection. in fact, many doctors who get patients with copper IUD who complain about peeing or feeling like they have to pee or being bloated and etc. will run such a test and will also tell them to watch salt intake, drink more water, etc.
Other signs of copper allergy may include rashes, acne, itchy skin and etc.
Anyone who tells you it is like a U.S. penny - is simply incorrect. The copper IUD - the copper wire is solid copper. In contrast, a penny is nearly 98% zinc and coated in a thin miniscule copper plating. In has been so since 1982. Prior to that the copper content of a penny was no where near 100% either.
Some people do indeed have metal allergies. The fact that a piece of copper is stuck inside of you and has access to your blood stream -quite easily through the uterine lining, makes it much more accessilb eot your entire system. Someone with even a remote allergy would be more apt to react to it.
That said, things to consider about this: would you put a coin inside of you to prevent becoming pregnant?
Have you ever seen what happens to copper when it is oxidized 9say outside) by the elements including water? Do you think your insides are not prone to things such as moisture and oxygen?
Anyone who believes there is no scientific evidence supporting reaction to the copper IUD is simply mistaken. There can indeed be allergic reactions and they do indeed include weight gain which would be primarily bloating and edema which can set off a whole slew of reactions within the body.
That said, the medical community has no idea precisely how or why this thing works, just that it does work. While some may have no side effects, others may indeed have side effects.
Consider this: if a piece of copper plumbing went into your arm, would you remove it - or would you leave it there believing it is safe for that copper to be inside of your arm? Copper plumbing is solid copper as well.
So for the doubters about allergic reactions to this thing, consider what is known about copper.
Also consider that while you had no reaction, someone did.
And that said, bear in mind that many prescriptions and such approved by the FDA and prescribed by doctors that were thought to be safe, turned out to be quite unsfae. Consider what is now known about Zyprexa and Yaz - both prescriptions involved in class action law suits in the U.S.
So, if you have this thing and it works for you - great. If you have this thing and are gaining weight, bloated and feel constant urination urge or the only thing that helps is to drink tons of water, get it out. Make your doctor remove it. The doctor will most likely fight you, but you will feel much better once the allergen is removed.
And BTW, copper allergy testing is not required prior to insertion of this. But if you have reaction to earrings or jewelry that is not solid gold, this is a good indication to other metal allergies.
Good luck ladies!

When I had my IUD placed (Mirena) I had the same problem. It was like I was constantly hungry and ate and ate, and since I am a stay at home mom the food was completely accessible. I also felt like I was ALWAYS pregnant. So after 17months of constantly testing, and gaining a +60-70lbs, also I broke out everywhere and had back pain. I got it taken out in Feb 2010. I am now currently on my weight loss journey, as soon as I got that little bugger out I felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders!! I am completely 100% free of BC and wouldn't have it any other way!!!

I am so glad i stumbled upon this thread. I have been wanting to get an IUD for a long time now and now that i have heard what you guys have to say HELL NO i am not getting it!

So, do you guys have any alterntive methods that you like that don't cause crazy weight gain?

Leydam

Leydam- it's been about a year since you commented. I am wondering how the weight loss progress is going? I have just had my copper IUD removed 2 days ago and am hoping I can finally get rid of the weight I gained while on it!!

Mirena IUD

I just want to chime in here... I have never read such negative and hateful comments to strangers about weight loss! Of course bc CAN make someone gain weight! If that's how it affects their body, there's no reason to try and bash them for stating it. YOU don't know what it's doing to them. You're not them and you're NOT their dr!

I'm 21 & I'm on a 1200 calorie per day diet and I walk regularly. I swim & work out more often than I used to... still need to step up my exercise, but my point is that I'm not sedentary. I'm 5'8 170 lbs. I had the Mirena IUD put in due to endometriosis (really bad periods). It's helped with the bleeding and cramps, but let me tell you.. I gained 40 lbs in half a year. Going from 130lbs to 170lbs was drastic. That was very intense for me and has been a HUGE blow to my self-esteem. I get these crazy contractions and nausea all the time. My boobs always hurt & I'm always bloated. I eat less but I gain more weight. I keep thinking that I'm pregnant & my Dr even thought I was too. She explained to me that the contractions are because I've never been pregnant and my uterus is trying to push it out. It's just the side effects. I wish sooo badly that I could have it taken out so that I could lose this weight, but I'm worried about the endometriosis. I don't want to let my vanity get in the way of my health. I wonder if the cons of the IUD outweigh the pros of ending the heavy periods. I don't know anymore. I hate being at this weight.

I totally understand what this girl is feeling. I don't go out and I hate getting ready. I feel like a cow and no matter how much people try and say that my weight distributes well, no one can deny that I don't look like myself anymore.

Hi I had the copper iud for 5 yrs. I gained 80 lbs it's been 6 months since I had it removed now I'm down 15 lbs. Which is awesome cause I tried for years to lose just to keep gaining. It is true about the emotional part also I was really depressed probably from gaining so much weight. I went online before I got mine removed started reading about copper toxicity.it has a lot of the side effects I was experiencing so now I'm doing all natural for my body
Ill use a condom when needed if my husband does not want any more babies then he has two options. He can put on the condom or he can get fixed. I'm done putting my body through torture.

I'm with you on this one, allthough there may not be any medical explination for iud weight gain in nonhormonal iuds YET, it is happening to wemon and i am one of them. If you think about it were having something foreign inserted into our reproductive organs completly unnatural. i have had 6 kids .I'm not a doctor i can't explain it but i have gained 10 pounds since i had it inserted and i don't like it, i feel pregnant maybe because my body knows theres something in the uterus . I don't know, but i'm having it removed today after only two months i am not willing to wait any longer and see if it levels out it is very hard to loose weight . I went from 208 after all my kids and worked my butt of to get down to 150 just to have it ruined for birth control .i don't think so i think its my husbands turn for birth control ! it does work for some wemon but were all different. so good luck i hope it works out for.

ASo weird to hear about weight gain with the iud. I have had mine for 5 years. About a year after getting it was dieting and lost 60 ponds.

omgee! some of you really are them type of people that are known as "know it alls" and are just eh!

that copper Iud causes weight gain!

Let me tell you's who think its us with the problem for why we do not lose weight while on the birth control. I am a nursing student and used the online library's database "cinahl" to research this.

There was a study of women who used the copper iud in brazil and on nigerian(sorry if misspelled) woman , and over a course of 6 years the average weight was a INCREASE of 6lbs. that is just an average for those of you that know anything about statistics.

I cant stand people that tell people bs when someone knows what they are talking about.

i have done everything to lose, and lost only 6lbs in six months of running 45 min, 4miles, doing weights, vegitarian diet, no chips, no carbs, no breads!!!!! no candy, no pop-soda, no diet pop. all i drink is water. At first i was able to lose a little, the first year having it in, but it is impossiable now.

My husband hurt my feelings but he told there is something wrong with me.

He thought I was having an affair every morning bc he said there is no way your going to the gym, that I look the same.

This thing has caused to many side effects.

And when someone says they really believe something in particular is causing a certain problem it should not be dissmissed like some of you have done, making people second guesing their selves.

IT CAUSES WEIGHT GAIN! I m getting this pos out of me tomarrow and hope my weight will finally fall off.

sorry i sound bitchy, but come on.
