It Starts...

I am looking forward to the communication classes because they are very open discussion as compared to lecture, so the classes are smaller and you get to know people. Oddly enough I really enjoyed the public speaking course I took 2 semesters ago… and even odder I was the ONLY student to get an A.

:hurray: VIRGO! :p Nice! You and Sam make me miss school....sigh! If I was in school, though, I wouldn't have time for all my exercise and I's start stress-eating, probably....so maybe I should make my own curriculum and read my damn Personal Trainer's handbook, yeah??

So Ill work about 30 hours a week on top of that.

:eek2: :eek2: :eek2: I don't know how you do it! I hope you don't have to commute, much (?)

I’ve also been researching running plans. I downloaded one last year but the amount of miles per week intimated me. I wasn’t ready for that kind of commitment. I am ready now, more because running is going to make my legs SEXY and honestly there is NOTHING I want more. I really do hate my legs.!

I'm sorry that you feel this way, Dee :( Look, your running plan idea is GREAT and it will definitely alter your legs' appearance for the better because I can TESTIFY that my own legs have changed since I started running some years ago. I hope you will eventually be able to say "I love my legs" :)

I love your workout schedule. It inspires me to make my own! Thank you :)

Dee.

Seeing as you are into learning about this stuff, I highly suggest to you purchasing Lyle McDonald's book titled, "Stubborn Fat Solution."

Hey thanks for the tip.... I was hoping to order it on Amazon, but apparently they don't have it. I only found one site acutally selling it called Body Recomposition... any tips on where I might find it for cheaper??

Nope.

That's the downside of great books. Most of the best books regarding this stuff can't be found on Amazon or your local bookstores. They're written by niche authors and sold directly through their personal websites. Just like any other niche product, prices are slightly jacked up.

bodyrecomposition is Lyle McDonald's website.

Yeah I honestly can't wait to be done with school just so that I can get on with my life... know what I mean?? But there is a good chance I will be going to Grad school so I could be at this for a while...

My office is only like 6 miles from my house and the university is only 1.5 miles from there so I'm not driving all over the place like a crazy woman! I tend to like things busy and "scheduled" keeps me going!!

Honestly it could be worse... I could hate my entire body and be super unhappy in my life... and considering my legs are the ONLY thing that really bothers me I think I'm doing pretty good. I just need to work at it... yeah I keep within caloric range but I don't nearly put enough energy into exercising as I should or as I want to... Its a priority thing... Everything comes before me so when I do get time for me... especially when I am in school its hard to put a good effort... But I did lose 7 pounds last semester and I hope to get down more than that this semester and pull EXCELLENT grades. I feel that with my school schedule this semester I should be able to pull it off piece of CAKE!!!

Figures huh... Well I just got a nice check from the university for my books for this semester... I will just tac it onto that bill. :) Any other suggested reads while I'm in the market???

Ha. You should now by now that I'm the wrong guy to ask that question! I spend more on books than any other human I know. All the books I read, for the most part, are really expensive.

All of Lyle's books are fantastic. All of them. Some of the best material I've read ever. But they're all very specific. By that, I mean with his books, he discussing one particular facet of fitness. For instance, the book I suggested above is solely about stubborn body fat. In it you'll learn more than you thought imaginable about body fat and why stubborn fat is stubborn and possible ways to combat it.

But it's not a broad topic. In truth, if you're going to comprehensively discuss a facet of this 'science' in a book, the book is going to have to be quite specific since you can say soooo much regarding each facet.

That said, I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for or what you're interested in learning about.

How about a book that tells you how to shed the last 10 unwanted pounds? Something a little more insightful than eating less and moving more. LOL

Melissa does have a point there... I'm also interested in getting rid of cellulite and running of course. :)

Its hard to pin point what I am interested in at this VERY moment. I think I will find certain things as the semester progresses... but I will start with the McDonald book and then move from there! :)

Lyle's Stubborn fat protocol is more a way of exercising to tap into stubborn fat stores.

Most of his other books are specific dieting tactics used to elicit a specific response. For instance, his ultimate diet 2.0 book is for people who are interested in losing the last bit of fat. It's a complicated process which is why you don't see a lot of people discuss the 'hows' often. It's not as simple as eating less and moving more. That only gets you so far, specifically when you have a good bit to lose. Once you reach a certain point though, your body fights back if you don't implement more tactics. This fighting back can come in various forms, from ravishing hunger, inability to lose due to depressed metabolic rate, loss of muscle, etc, etc.

This is why things like refeeds and useful.

Like I said, you would learn a ton from any of Lyle's books even if you weren't going to specifically follow his plan. You could still take bits and pieces once you learn how they apply to your given situation and comfort level.

Those books exist. They're just more complex than most people would care to read since the author tends to define and explain the problem before offering up possible solutions. These definitions and explanations go into a bit of 'sticky' stuff but it's not too terribly bad if you're interested in the subject.

January 19, 2009

So its Monday and I thought I would give a little post.

My weekend was pretty laid back. I spent the most of Saturday out shopping for baby shower stuff with my mom. Her and I are helping plan a shower for my sister in law for next Saturday. We were having a hard time finding the paper goods but did alright in the end. I also had an electrolysis appointment. For those of you who don’t know its permanent hair removal. Being of Spanish blood I had a lot of excess hair on my face and a serious uni-brow when I was younger. It’s been several years since I’ve had to pluck my eyebrows or anything else on my face for that matter. I decided that why stop at my face?? So I’m having my pits done. It’s pretty painful but well worth it. I used to have to pluck my brows daily it seemed like and now I comb them… ha ha its pretty sweet.

We had a late lunch with my parents and then went home to just relax… well it was soooo nice out that we decided to go for a run. We had Boomer this weekend so he got to go along. We did just over 2 miles in about 35 mins. That included 2 grueling hill sprints… I actually passed Step at one point but he wasn’t really trying… but it was still nice to speed past him. :) We had a nice stretch and then threw in a movie for the rest of the evening.

Sunday I got up early and headed out to my parents place about 40 mins away to do a workout with my mom and weigh her in and stuff. She did really well… I had her do a circuit type workout with really light weight so that I could teach her proper form and breathing. She kept complaining that the weights weren’t heavy enough … ha she is ambitious! Next week she will come to me and we will walk 3 miles (the loop) to start prepping for the 5K walk we are doing on Valentine’s Day. My hope to is someday be able to run with her… but she said she hasn’t run since junior high some 30+ years ago... but she wants to again someday which makes me happy.

I didn’t get my points for yesterday as far as food goes… I was still in the deficit but only 596. I didn’t think I ate that much, but oh well. I also took the day off of exercise which I am now kicking myself for… I will make up for it this week though.

Today marks day 1 of my ½ marathon training. Step thinks that upping the mileage a mile a week is too ambitious but we will see how I do. In 2 weeks when my long run is 5 miles, that will be the true test… I haven’t run more than 4 so we will see. I am fully confident that I can do it and if I feel I need to repeat a week I have no problem doing that. Step thinks I should just do that anyway, but we will see maybe when I get into the 7-10 range I might want more time.

At the moment I am not really feeling too hot… I have a bit of a headache… I swear the water here gives me one. I went to school on my lunch break to see what books I needand also got a nice walk in. The majority of my classes have an online component and for my C&J 314 class there is already an assignment up and a packet we have to pick up before class tomorrow and go through, but School was closed today so I don’t know how we are expected to pick up stuff and go through it before tomorrow… Its my last class of the day so hopefully I will get an opportunity to pick it up and go through it… but the copy center its at on campus is like waaaaaay out of the way… I swear all the buildings are over .25 mile from each other… which is NOT a bad thing but when I have only 15 mins… then it becomes a problem!

Okay now I’m just ranting. I’m slightly discouraged that my weight hasn’t changed much but then I figure I’m just not working hard enough… so I need to work harder and STOP being impatient. I think hiding the scale might not be a bad idea for this next week… I’m getting obsessive again about it. I think I might just have Step take my measurements and compare to the last time… see if there have been any change… Okay again I’m ranting… that’s all for now.

Happy Monday.

My office is only like 6 miles from my house and the university is only 1.5 miles from there so I'm not driving all over the place like a crazy woman!

Lucky! I am that crazy woman driving all over the place! :(

HAPPY FIRST DAY of half-marathon training! You and Steph are so cute, exercising together. PZ and I had a great bonding experience during our breakdancing lesson. He also put some ferns and stuff in his greenhouse and said I could put orchids in there and he'd take care of them :) I love orchids!

That is so cool about training your mom! You're such a great daughter :D Feel better soon!

UGH that used to be me when I lived with my parents and was going to ITT... it was 80 miles one way and I did that 4 days a week plus all the in-between driving I did... I swear I lived out of my car!!

Thanks lady!! I just hope it gets better... I'm stuck at my desk with nothing to do... reading over my syllabi for the semester and pretty much want to STAB myself... I just know as soon as I get in my car my headache will dissappear! Then I can get on with my DAY 1 WORKOUT!!! I'm hoping to get in 400+ mins of exercise this coming week... more like I AM going to get in 400+ mins of exercise!!!!

Aww I'm so happy for you Val! You deserve a good man!!

LOL... hey its nice to be SMOOOOOOTH ya know? If I had the money for it I would be in that chair DAILY!!! LOL getting it ALL done!! But I can endure once a week.

I hope her motivation stays up... I have big plans for the summer as far as outdoors activities... and I am hoping that she is well under 200 by then too!!!!

UGH I don't feel like I am doing a good job the scale is barely moving downward and everything seems to fit the same... I think BIG changes are in order but that is only a question for STEVE!!!

Again patience is key but its hard when I have been at this for 10 years and am SOOOOO freaking close I can taste it!!! I feel like I am back peddaling at this point UGH!!!!

January 20, 2009

Okay... I'm currently in a comp pod...just a quick check in. First day is going well so far.... but the class that is already a pain in my ARS is coming up at 11:00...

I feel pretty energized today but I hate being back on campus... once again I am the biggest girl in the room and all the chickas around me are GORGEOUS and I don't even kind of fit in... and I even attempted to half way make myself look nice today... UGH!! This is where the real challenge hits....

I'm off to buy BOOKS which = spending LOTS of Money!!!

What's your calories at currently and how much are you exercising. The thing goals is most people have them set up where they're competing with one another.

If you're eating strictly plus marathon training plus weight training plus whatever stress you have going on, things tend to go a little haywire. Metabolic rate can certainly drop to a degree where scale movements are hard to see, either b/c they're masked by fluid retention or your metabolism has slowed to a crawl making what should be a deficit, maintenance.

That's why I rarely have women who are relatively small already looking to get leaner do a lot of cardio. It just doesn't work for fat loss well. The body tends to resist it.

I also don't diet linearly. I institute refeeds quite often.

You are TRIPPIN'! :willy_nilly:
It's GOT to be in your head, no way there are tons of SUPERMODELS in New Mexico. I ain't buyin it! Dee, don't compare yourself to other girls, it's useless and will only make you more self conscious. If anything, see them for their inner selves--a great way to make friends and keep perspective on the important things in life :)

Steve has some good advice--I never heard some of that and am refraining from teasing him about the "slowed metabolism" myth, haha! but seriously you got in 6 days of 700+ deficits and only lost half a pound--SOMETHING's up! Must be water retention!
