I'm much heavier than I should be, about 50lbs actually, but that isn't the only thing. I've been drinking a lot lately, and I haven't seriously worked out in about 5 years. I also have a bad left knee, which for some reason (gait?) causes my right knee to swell up on occasion.
I'm in my early 30s and have decided I don't want to be fat anymore, or out of shape. Today I went to the gym for the first time in awhile, and it was pretty sad.
My goal was 40 mins walking on the treadmill, at about 3.5 mph and some weightlifting.
I lasted 18 mins and had to quit because my knee hurt so much. Should I take painkillers before I go and push through it or was quiting the right thing?
Weightlifting was pretty sad, but I figured it would be such. I decided since I am losing weight, I'd do 2 sets of each exercise only, and do them every day. I use free weights and before my 5 year lapse, I was heavily into powerlifting and general fitness (at which point my knee wasn't an issue - perhaps from all the squats, dunno). I did two sets of squats of 5 reps at 95 lbs (I used to squat 350 regularly) and that about killed me. Even now, half a day later, my legs are jello and sore.
Should I be this out of shape after only 5 years?
