I'm so out of shape..

I'm much heavier than I should be, about 50lbs actually, but that isn't the only thing. I've been drinking a lot lately, and I haven't seriously worked out in about 5 years. I also have a bad left knee, which for some reason (gait?) causes my right knee to swell up on occasion.

I'm in my early 30s and have decided I don't want to be fat anymore, or out of shape. Today I went to the gym for the first time in awhile, and it was pretty sad.

My goal was 40 mins walking on the treadmill, at about 3.5 mph and some weightlifting.

I lasted 18 mins and had to quit because my knee hurt so much. Should I take painkillers before I go and push through it or was quiting the right thing?

Weightlifting was pretty sad, but I figured it would be such. I decided since I am losing weight, I'd do 2 sets of each exercise only, and do them every day. I use free weights and before my 5 year lapse, I was heavily into powerlifting and general fitness (at which point my knee wasn't an issue - perhaps from all the squats, dunno). I did two sets of squats of 5 reps at 95 lbs (I used to squat 350 regularly) and that about killed me. Even now, half a day later, my legs are jello and sore.

Should I be this out of shape after only 5 years?

Problem number one. And it's not what you think. It's not that you're overweight, it's that you are focused on how overweight you are just by looking at the scale. Don't go by that number, go by total body fat percentage.

Stop drinking and get to the gym. Those are changes that you just have to make.

If it's really a problem, then see a doctor. Otherwise, stop finding excuses and get to the gym.

Taking pain killers would be a terrible idea. Again, stop looking for excuses and the easy way out here. You need to focus on just getting back into things. It's a great start that you actually GOT TO THE GYM. Now you have to do something productive with that time. Work into things gradually, and you will get there.

Go to the weight training sticky and pick a professionally made routine. You should probably considering buying Starting Strength. Read it through and follow it. You'll learn all the big lifts and the right way to do them. And yes, it is entirely possible that you have lost just about all of your fitness in 5 years.

Ride On is right.

little steps, don't overreach, you will just quit if you do. i posted to your other thread.

Starting Strength, is a great book to own.

take some ibprofein before you run thats all nothing more ride is right couldn't hae said it better myself

That's all I meant when I said painkillers.

As for the injury, it isn't an excuse. I'm going to the gym right? And the injury itself was grounds for an honourable medical discharge from the marines. I'm not just talking about a sore knee.

No, I'm not focused on how overweight I am, but it is a factor, so I mentioned it. My bodyfat percent is pretty high, considering I haven't worked out in 5 years and I have a cushy IT related job.

Going to the gym... check, duh. I mentioned that in my OP.

Quitting drinking. Not going to happen. Cutting it down, yes.

If it's really a problem, then see a doctor. Otherwise, stop finding excuses and get to the gym.

My wife is a PT, I don't need to see a doctor. TYVM.

My god, are you like 15? How is taking some Ibprofren such a bad idea? Because your fancy bodybuilding magazines don't mention it? Maybe when you actually face real life events other than mommy grounding you, you will run into things like Torn ACLs, ruptured meniscuses and so forth, but until then, you will just spout off your memorized crap like you know what you are talking about. Excuses indeed.

Yes, professionally made routines are the answer. Nobody is different, we are all the same. Let us use some generic routine typed out by somebody that has to use wordpress because they can't be bothered to get a real website made.

If this is the type of crap thrown about at me on this site, I'd rather waste me time at bodybuilding.com with their whey-fart stench and youtube comment type of drivel.

Oh, you are just here to cry like a baby then?

got it

This. I tried to help, not make you whine. You don't like advice that is to the point, but I apologize for not feeling the need to baby you. Maybe you should actually take some suggestion when you ask for it instead of try to figure out why everything you're doing isn't wrong. Why even ask a question if you know everything? I would be happy to help, but quite frankly, I am too busy to be bothered with some not willing to take advice and who is not willing to help himself. Changes come from within, and you're not ready. I can talk till I'm blue in the face but if you're not even ready to give up drinking, you're not willing to make the commitment you need. Good luck otherwise.

And no, I'm not 15, I clearly know more than you, and yes Ibuprofen is a bad idea to be taking all the time. And I know that because I know more than you. Get off your ****ing high horse and stop thinking what you're doing is right, because it's not. And if it was, you wouldn't have been here asking a question. Don't judge me because of your own insecurity. YOU ARE NOT RIGHT. YOU DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING. WHEN YOU COME TO TERMS WITH THAT, MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, YOU'LL GET SOMEWHERE.

Whatever your wife is doing, isn't working. See a doctor.

And you think that a routine that you would make is BETTER than one made by a professional? Are you retarded? Holy ****. I can't stand people like you. You're never gonna get anywhere. I feel bad for you because you're gonna leave here thinking that you knew more than us and you're gonna continue doing your crappy routine (that you somehow think is better than someone who has been training people for years and delivered innumerable positive results), never get any results, keep drinking and exacerbating a bad situation, have a bad knee that gets worse as you get older, and end up worse shape than you are now wondering where you went wrong.

Depends on the dose and duration, but prolonged use can cause kidney problems, and NOBODY wants that.

You are on the right track. Just stay focused and steadily increase the sets and reps as you progress through the weeks.

did you read what he wrote?

This guy needs help, asked for help, we try, then he tells us we don't know what we are doing.

He said in another thread that his wife would be annoying to workout with, what? Because she probably knows what she is doing and he doesn’t want to listen. She has probably been trying to get him to see a doctor about his knees?? Who knows?

yeah ok it can cause kidney problems. so what now adays does not cuase some sort of kidney problems, some sort of cancer, and some kind of sickness in general...nothin is good for you anymore if thats the route you wanna take it

I don't think the guy was asking for pity, just stating some facts about himself and being realistic.

To the op: yeah, you can lose fitness in a big way in 5 years. If your knee is bothering you, pick something else that doesn't aggravate the knee; have you tried swimming or cycling? And, I agree that long-term ibuprofen use is bad, but is okay for short-term use.

BTW, happy 234th birthday of the USMC.
