How to make this forum better?

I wasn't picking on you -but i already asked abut having it removed from the admin - and it just reminded me :D

N/P - I understand newcomer sounds better. I think STARS should be gone to I am so over it now but I had 5 stars for the longest time and I had a disagreement with someone on here and I feel it was taking for spite example
I can tell 5 of my closests friedns to rate someone a LOW rating because I don't like them and the stars disapear?I totally feel that was done to me a WHILE back because a MALE on here stepped WAY OUT OF LINE.....
Just a thought I think the stars are dumb unless people are rating honestly??Tammy

he did add some smilies (and that tongue one gives me the creeps :D more would be OK i guess... there's still a 10 smilie limit per post so you can't go too nuts...

I wouldn't go nuts.

I'd just like to add one's from my collection.

This place has ads? Yes, I'm serious, I have never seen an ad in this forum. I guess I can say thank you to opera and firefox for that:).

I really like the idea for the "harsh truth" section. However, as you said, how would you decide who's an expert?

You have to pass the WLF test to be considered an expert.

Not sure whether the newcomers would like being called "boobs"... like some sort of initiation. Maybe it would weed out the weak ones;)

Some people earn the title rather quickly around here.

But that's for another thread.

there is a bit of an initiation that experts get put thru herer isn't there :) but in as serious as I can possibly get - I have posed the question in the harsh truth forum - about what makes a person an expert :)

What initiation might that be, lol?

I saw the question.... I just don't think you'll find an answer.

Hell, the training industry in general can't decipher boob from quality.

I think an expert can give quality advice and back it up. If someone is claiming expertise yet spewing crap.... better believe you're going to get called on it.

Not saying *real* experts are never wrong and it's good to question ANYONE. But I'm sure you all know what I mean. We get a lot of people in here claiming expertise yet they're spitting one myth after another about optimal training/nutrition.

To me, it's not hard to tell who knows their stuff and who doesn't.

for you - that's true... for others not so much...

No I agree with ya.

I've seen more than once a new member sign up here, tell everyone they're a trainer (usually at the same time they try and promote their own website) and right away people jump in the thread and start asking questions. Before they know if this person knows the difference between their ass and their elbow.

People who are desperate for information will believe anyone who puts him/herself in an authoritative position.

People who are desperate for information will believe anyone who puts him/herself in an authoritative position.

Exactly - and its not because they're stupid or anything...

There's a scene in the movie The American President between michael j fox and michael douglas

MD: Look, if the people want to listen to-...
MJF: They don't have a choice! Bob Rumson is the only one doing the talking! People want leadership, Mr. President, and in the absence of genuine leadership, they'll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want leadership. They're so thirsty for it they'll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there's no water, they'll drink the sand.

is the reference I'm going for... desperate people will listen to whomever is doing the talking - why do you think that some diet plans sell so well :D

1. hiding post counts
2. dumping reputation levels - it really doesn't mean anything anyhow
3. limiting ads for weight loss products that we wouldn't support the use of on this forum (IE I cringe evertime I see the Hoodia ads)
4. Improved searching capabilities - or a better faq to teach people how to search (yeah, I know write one Mal :) it drives me crazy when the same question gets asked over and over again.

As always, I agree with you maleficent. Post counts and reputation levels remind me to much of a popularity contest. We are all at the same level, no matter how much we weigh or lose and post.

Best Wishes,

Carrie

Maybe when a NEWB opens an account after 30-60-90 days of being unactive and they posted less than 5 times maybe delet them and if they decide to come bacl later then they can start AAa NEW account?I was looking through the members list and there are a TON of peeps with 1 or less posts that sighned up a LONG time ago I would imagine they are not coming back anytime soon?Tammy

Not only that, but as a newcomer, if I'm trying to find someone, that I wouldn't have to look thru pages & pages to find them. Just a suggestion.

just an fyi -
you can do searches within the members list on a portion of a name to find who you are looking for and by using the advanced search you can search on join dates, etc

have the harsh truth forum be "more moderated" -- there are a lot of threads in there that really don't belong in there and aren't be answered by the 'experts'

give 'expert' status to people and only they are allowed to answer the questions and questions asked in there should be approved first otherwise the can go into a general forum.

Agree with Mal....Perhaps it could be as simple as assigning an icon once status was given (by a moderator.) Status could be given after an allotted amount of time so that the reputation symbol is earned and not given away freely to just anyone.
