No worries about unofficial weigh ins... just try not to do them coz they can affect your mood, and it's 50-50 whether it'll be good or bad each time. STICK TO ONCE A WEEK! ...the reason I'm glad we don't own a scale coz THEN I'd be obsessing!!!
A friend of mine, Philip, has that same nervous habit you described, the same joint too. At one stage all his finger joints were red, thickened, raised and raw. It was a terrible sight. He also had a touch of that "pull-you-own-hair-out-syndrome"... trachi-something-something. Anyway, it's usually anxiety that brings it on. Try chewing gum instead... and make a rule not to let your hands touch your face, but for when you wash it. It really helps (for me because I constantly pick at my skin and that's the only reason I have mild acne)
I need to go buy some tinsel today to make a christmas wreath out of a wire coathanger
