From My Couch To A 5K... And Beyond!

Amber, you will be happy to know that I did not, I repeat DID NOT, indulge in a yummy minty shake! I thought of you and Jerome! :D

So I have a story that I never thought I would have to tell.

Some people in this world make me absolutely sick.

James and I decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and take a walk. We were about .25 of a mile into our walk, and we heard a strange noise. We stopped, being the animal lovers that we are, to see if anything might need our help. We kept hearing the noises, but we couldn't figure out where they were coming from. It was an odd sound... a mix of a bird chirp and kitten meow, so we couldn't figure out what it was. We called out into the brush, but nothing came. We kept hearing the noises over and over, so we knew it didn't run away. We were worried that maybe it was trapped. We walked all the way around to the other side, called out and still no luck getting it out. We walked back to the other side again to watch for movement. We knew something had to be wrong, because we could hear the cries for help, but still couldn't see the animal. We were looking and looking with no luck. All of a sudden, we see movement coming from a Wal Mart bag sitting on top of the brush. We freak out, realizing that something was trapped inside of it. James grabbed a huge stick and tried to lift the bag off of the brush. He couldn't reach, so we walked to the other side again. Finally, he was able to get the bag off. He carried it gently and put it down by us. We tore open the bag (it was tied shut), because we knew whatever was inside of it was still alive! You will never believe what we found...

5 tiny kittens! Yes, you read that right. One of them still had the umbilical cord attached. Their eyes weren't even open yet. They were the cutest things you have ever seen, and all 5 of them were fighting to live. Every single one of them was still breathing.

He stayed there to watch over them, and I ran home and got a box. I ran back, we put them in the box, and we quickly walked back home. I warmed a towel, and James put soft gloves on. He gently picked them up and wrapped them in in the towel. Then, James looked up animal shelters and rescue places. I called several, and you wouldn't believe how quick they were to say that they couldn't do anything. Even the ones that advertise "we turn no animals down" said no. They all just told me to call the pound, but they were closed! Plus, James and I refused to take them to the pound, because we knew that would be certain death. There's no way they would take the time to nurse them back to health.

Finally one of the vet offices gave us some hope. She took down my number and said she would call back. Thankfully, about 30 minutes later, she did! She said she found someone who would nurse them and take care of them!

We hopped in the car and drove there as quick as we could! She looked at them and said they couldn't have been even 2 weeks old yet! Less than 2 weeks old!

How could someone do that?! How could they drop these babies into a Wal Mart bag, knot it, and toss them into the woods?! How on Earth could you live with yourself?!

The thought really makes me sick, but I am so glad to know that we fought to do everything that we could. We can both sleep at night knowing that we helped save 5 baby kittens from certain death.

Some people seriously make me sick.

My boyfriend was helping a group he belongs to do a highway clean up and he and another guy found a bag of dead puppies and the mom in a seperate bag. That's why you should do what Bob Parker preached, "And remember to spay and neuter your pets." Sad thing is I bet ppl like that have children who aren't any better off.

That breaks my heart Tyly!!! I can't imagine finding a bag full of baby kittens like that. Some people are so awful to their pets. Why people just don't spay or neuter their dogs and cats I don't know, what dumbasses... Glad to hear you found a place for them to get nursed back to health. I would also advise that animal place that claims they turn no animals down to re-think their advertising....

OMG are you kidding... What is wrong with people?? I'm glad you stayed to figure out what the noise was, now they have a chance of getting a new home!

That must have been a gut wrenching experience for you and James, Tyly. I'm really glad you were able to find someone to help you finish dealing with it properly. Years ago I got my cat from an animal shelter, while she was still a kitten, and over her life, she gave me so much happiness. I hope the kittens you helped will go on to benefit another group of other people in that way.

Congratulations on sticking with your program over spring break, and Easter - a very little softening doesn't count amongst all the strength you kept up.

Some people are way beyond being morons...I mean, out of sight/out of mind doesn't make anything okay. My parents live by a highway. We ended up having about 4 stray cats end up at our house over the years because people would dump them out of their cars!

I have been thinking of you and the C to 5K and wondering how you've been doing now that you're into week nine. You're doing an amazing job. Keep it up, Forest!

Funny that you mention Bob Barker, because James did too! I can't believe your boyfriend had to find that. How horrible!

No joke, right?! We were pissed when she rudely said, "We don't have room for them", and then hung up. What the heck?!

We had to try and help somehow... there was no way we could knowingly walk away! Those babies were trying so hard to live, and we knew we had to help them!

James and I love our cat as our own child! And the dog, too. :)

They both give us so much joy, and I can't imagine not having them around!

Also, I love the "a very little softening doesn't count amongst all the strength you kept up."... I needed that! :D

Forrest! Haha! You are too funny! :)

Week 9 has actually been pretty good to me thus far. I only ran once during Spring Break, so it was a pleasant surprise to clock my best time after it! I guess taking a small break from running did more good than harm! Once I am done with Week 9, I need to figure out a new schedule to help prepare me for the 5K!

Hey Tyly.

I can't believe your almost completely finished with the C25K, then it's all up to what you want to do I guess. I'm still working on Week 4 but, I really just want to skip to Week 5 because I accidentally did that workout the other day instead, lol.

Have a great day!

Thanks for stopping in Sam!

I am almost done! Only one more run to go! :D

I have decided that I am going to keep running at least 3 times a week. I plan to up my running just a few minutes at a time. Next week be 33 minutes, the week after that will be 35, and so on. Gotta prepare for that 5K!

I am excited, because tomorrow I am going to San Antonio to watch my little brother play baseball!

Eating and exercise have both been really good this week, but I am still trying to undo Spring Break damage!

A girl at work today told me in order to lose weight I should take my weight, multiply it by 7, and that's how many calories I should be eating. YEAH RIGHT! That would put me at eating 1130 calories a day! Not going to happen! Crazy people.

Wow. That girl at your work is crazy!!! Let her follow that plan and see how long she sticks with it, and if she tries to exercise and keep that up too, have fun...

I think your future running plans would sound similar to mine when I finish this C25K. Your going in the right direction.

Have fun in San Antonio!

-Sam

Congrats on the couch to 5k!!!!

Here's a link to a 10K running program thats for a 10K event in my neck of the woods. You are way beyond starting it from the beginning, but it may give you some ideas of how to work on interval training to get you up to the next level...10K!!!

I'm thinking of possibly switching over to this program if the longer sessions of running cause my back trouble. It focuses on more intervals of shorter times, with session times that are much longer. It should help with overall endurance.

Anyways, you're looking good, hon!

Thank you so much for that link!!! I have checked it out, and I definitely plan on using it!

I think I may have finally undone Spring Break damage. I weighed 161.8 this morning. I'm still not back to my low of 161.2, but I am finally close! After my gain last week, I was pretty bummed. I totally messed myself up, but I think my body has finally decided to cooperate again!

The reason I have been a ghost lately is because I was worried! After Spring Break, I should have started my TOM that next Tuesday (March 26). Well I didn't start until April 1, so I was a week late! I was freaking out! My weight went up, I was more tired than usual, I was occasionally nauseous, and I was late.

Thankfully all is well. A baby is not something I am ready for right now. It wouldn't have been the end of the world, but it just isn't our time yet. James is a great man and is very supportive, but we both have plans that we want to achieve before that happens. We would have made it work, but it would have been tough. I don't want you guys to think he is the type to leave me over it.

Now that I have that off of my shoulders, I am ready to go back to the old me. I was still exercising and eating right before, but now my mind is in a more stable place. It was all over the place from the uncertainty.

At the end of Spring Break I pretty much at like crap and didn't exercise the last 5 days of it (March 19 - 23). I started out well, but it went to crap. I swear the difference in diet and exercise is what messed me all up. I am always very regular (TOM), and my food and exercise were the only things that changed.

I have definitely learned my lesson, because I was very mentally stressed. It feels good to not have to think about it anymore. I can go back to focusing on losing weight! I am not saying I will never treat myself, but I definitely won't have a succession of days of crap food and no exercise. I was doing it right before this happened, and that's what I am going back to!

I am mad that it set back my goal of reaching the 150's, but I am hoping to see it this month. Hopefully by Tax Day!

Well there's my update!

Love and hugs to all!

Trust me, you werent the only one who did damage on spring break...

Im finally back on track but you right that it feels better to be back on track, then to add frustration to an already hectic life.

It sounds like everything is well!!

have a great day!

Hey lady! :)

I'm glad that story had a happy ending. You have no idea (you probably do actually) how much I want to kill people who abuse animals. If I had the good fortune of being independently wealthy, I'd make it a career, it not a side-job, helping animals who are victim of such shit.

That's just so uncalled for. At the very least, if you're going to be such a dick, drop them in the woods with a fighting chance... not in a fucking bag.

Wow... that stuff is just so irritating.

There is a 'cat killer' on the loose in Philadelphia right now. They keep finding them mutilated all over the place. Some of them have cords tied around their necks. One even had a stick shoved down it's throat into its gut.

How the hell could you do that?

Anyhow, glad you seem to be undoing the damage!

Well, I don't think it's the worst thing in the world if you have to *humanely have an animal put down at the vet, but that's just sad. And it probably was just an issue of money too, to make it worse. They probably were too cheap or couldn't afford to have kitten's mom fixed (I find money is the root of many problems), but if you really can't afford to have your cat fixed, how on earth do you expect to pay for the rest of it's life. Animals aren't cheap.

The whole situation is unfortunate, truly it is. But what else is unfortunate is that there are few sick people in the world who have actually done that to their own baby.

Needless to say, I don't like many people.

But good for you, you did a great thing.

I completely agree! I had to put a dog down that had distemper, and that was heartbreaking. I just think the way these people went about it was absolutely disgusting. They could have let the kittens nurse a few weeks, then taken them to the pound.

Some people really are cruel.

I am so glad to find someone else who shares my passion about it. James was completely broken up about the poor kittens, and that made me love him even more.

I just don't understand how you could do something like that and then sleep at night.

Thank you for stopping in, handsome! I always love seeing your sweet replies! :)

Hello... Glad to see that your on track with your diet!
Dont let the period fool you, you still might want to take a test, I was on mine when i found out i was prego..no to say you are though;) Well i hope the rest of your week is good!!

I have found that my already wacky period (its never regular) has gotten even wackier with this exercise/diet thing. Your body probably doesn't know what the heck to do with all this weight you've been dropping. It'll probably settle down when you reach you're goal and get into maintenance. Yup and the stress of worrying probably hasn't helped. Glad to see you're back kicking those pounds to the curb. I always feel like I'm floundering when my routine is thrown off.

Hey Tyly,

Great to hear you got back on track! Spring Break messes everybody up, probably even me and I wasn't even on a Spring Break, lol... It's only the begging of April still and I know if we keep this running up we will be thrilled by the time June rolls around. Don't be too upset about reaching the 150's yet, the slower the weight comes off usually corresponds to how long you keep the weight off :)

Have a great day!

-Sam
