i see people here referring to steps. could someone define a step? is it a single stride? a left foot or right foot forward? or is it both left & right (or right & left depending on which you start with)...? when i walk, a single stride of mine is about 2½ feet. so in one case, 10,000 steps would be 5' x 5000 = about 4¾ miles. otherwise, it would be double that or about 9½ miles.
i guess i found the answer to my question this morning.
from a website that has a lot of articles about walking...
"Each 2,000 to 2,500 steps is about a mile."
so a step is either your right foot or your left foot forward. that makes more sense in that 10,000 steps for me would be ~4¾ miles as my pace is almost exactly 2½'. if you want to get really accurate, find a ¼ mile track or a football field (100 yds) and count the number of steps it takes to cover a good distance like that. then divide by the length of that distance and you'll get an amazingly accurate length of your stride.
