Flyer's diary

i see people here referring to steps. could someone define a step? is it a single stride? a left foot or right foot forward? or is it both left & right (or right & left depending on which you start with)...? when i walk, a single stride of mine is about 2½ feet. so in one case, 10,000 steps would be 5' x 5000 = about 4¾ miles. otherwise, it would be double that or about 9½ miles.

i guess i found the answer to my question this morning.
from a website that has a lot of articles about walking...

"Each 2,000 to 2,500 steps is about a mile."

so a step is either your right foot or your left foot forward. that makes more sense in that 10,000 steps for me would be ~4¾ miles as my pace is almost exactly 2½'. if you want to get really accurate, find a ¼ mile track or a football field (100 yds) and count the number of steps it takes to cover a good distance like that. then divide by the length of that distance and you'll get an amazingly accurate length of your stride.

finally got my toe unscrewed yesterday. got to keep the hardware... :)

the upside ... a few more pairs of shoes will be wearable again. the heads of these were starting to stick through my skin. the downside... no walking for about a month or so until my bones fill in the holes.

Wow! I somehow missed that you were Iron man, or Titanium Man, or whatever your screw was made out of. It's amazingly shiny, for having been inside a human being.
Sympathies on the no-walking. I'm currently nursing a wrenched knee, and even that (which only limits me a little - no long or energetic walks) is frustrating, and bugs me a bit about missing exercise.
About the bones filling in the holes... wow again! One more pointer for how absolutely amazing the human body is.
In sum - good for you, and speedy healing! :)

i thought the hardware might be some exotic metal, but turns out they're just stainless steel. i was a bit surprised when about half-way through the procedure, one of the nurses leaned over (i just had a local) and asked if i wanted to keep the screws. i then heard them clinking around in a jar, so i'm guessing just a bit of alcohol cleaned them up. having a literal lifetime guarantee, i'm sure the quality is a lot better than the general Home Depot selection. the socket heads are a nice touch. i'll have to think of a project i can incorporate them into.

from what i've been told, the tip of my toe is that way due to arthritis, but generally, i broke that toe 3-4 times over the years and the last time, probably a few decades ago now, they had to put in the metal plate and a few screws. there are still 4 short screws and that thin plate still in, but those are right on the surface or well into the bone. those two diagonal screws were the only ones that were a problem.

when i go in to get things like this checked on, the assistant who gets to me first to take b/p, etc sometimes leaves my x-rays on the screen and i try to take a photo when i can. this is just an iPhone photo. actually, the other one is, too. it's a great camera for anything close.

Hey flyer! I dropped by to say great work!
I read first two pages and this last one, first I must say - your result is something I wish for myself in the long run!

I like your approach, and I have to comment one post where you said it seems like you have much more free time when do this! I have the same feeling, since I don't need to spend that much time in the kitchen, and I'm actually not busy digesting food during the day. Digestion process makes me sluggish and slower usually.

Also, I already did a lot more than usual in last 3 days, runned some errands, etc. It seems like fasting is giving me lot of extra time and I feel productive and efficient. I simply wake up, and think what should I do today, no need to prepare meal, no need to go into the store, just black coffee and I'm good to go. That's really great.

Also, I wanted to ask - do you drink anything during the fasting hours? I usually have coffe without sugar (with just a little bit of milk) or tea. Not sure how that affects the process but I believe it's good for me to start slow, so I can eventually left coffee out after some time, if I feel need to.

during fasting hours i drink coffee (black w/ sweetener, tea (hot and iced) w/ sweetener and water. i have almond milk on hand some days, but i will only add it to coffee if i'm in or near an eating window even though the amount in tea or coffee would not likely boot me out of a fasting state. there are a lot of studies about using artificial sweeteners. all i will say there is that i found one that works for me.

i probably drink more coffee than water, but i really have to work on changing that around.

My 'problem' with coffee is that it's really hot when it's done so I get used to adding a little milk to make it easier to drink immediately. Little milk is something like few tablespons, not more. I think I'll keep it that way and eventually see if I need to get rid of that milk or not.
Our coffee here is in small mugs and very strong, so few tbsp of milk do the job.

picked up a new seed yesterday...

...boy, i thought Chia seeds were small, there are even tinier.

also picked up a few eggplants with the goal of trying to make a Baba Ganoush...
baba ganoush.jpg

if anyone has a good recipe.... they all seem fairly similar (i also picked up some Tahini), but i never mind hearing suggestions. i don't have a food processor so mine (that is just a generic picture, not mine) might be a bit more rugged/ chunky looking.

my foot seems to be healing up faster than i expected. i'm already walking (gently) on it. i can't see why i won't be back to at least 90% or so in a week when the stitches come out.

I must remember to put some hemp seed hearts in my next cracker batch. I love Baba Ganoush, but we don't make it. I'll have a look in our middle eastern cookbook later for a recipe.

the Hemp seeds gave me an 8th type again. i got some black sesame seeds a while ago, but they are awfully expensive and only a cosmetic difference. current inventory...

Pumpkin
Sesame
Sunflower
Hemp

Brown Flax
Golden Flax
White Chia
Black Chia

a cup of each in a mixing tub works out perfectly with the recipe that calls for 1 1/3 cups of seeds plus all the small seeds mixed in really does a good job of spacing out the larger sunflower and much larger pumpkin seeds.

6 x 1 1/3 = 8 cups.

Babaganoush is relatively easy, if you have an open fire, or an oven that can cook things to the point of charring the skin. I don't think it's the same over a gas-flame.
But delicious, agreed!

i haven't posted a weight in about 2 months now and for a good reason. i gave in a bit too much to temptation for much of December and January and before i knew it, i was recording weights into the mid 170's. add to that my foot surgery and it has been a rough few weeks getting back in shape. this morning i broke back into the 160's and with my foot finally healed up, i should be back to a bit more aggressive tact through some walks the next few weeks.

no big surprise to what i discovered. putting on a few lbs is sooooo much easier than taking them off again and a change like that can happen faster than you'd think...

Oh, you rotter! You could have been over with me in the 170s Club, but instead you lay low until you could slip through the door into the 160s zone! :flame:

No, that was just me kidding around - and seriously, well done on getting back on track, and I'll be in there with you before too long, I hope! :)

new driver's license .... settled on 168 ... can't believe it's not a bad picture either... :)
