Flumes Journal....

Well....today was a great day!

Woke up and felt compelled to weigh myself again.

I just wanted to make sure that 210 was real....well......it was wrong.

It read 209!!!!!

As Freddie Mercury would say....."And another one gone...And another one gone...Another one bites the dust!!!!"
!

W00h000!!! :))

Well done hon. Just reading though your "journalbecauserealmendon'thavediaries" and am struck by how happy and positive you are about making the change and taking control - it feels like you are really getting to a good place in life by doing this so congrats!!

and 209 ROCKS! Nothing like the feelign of stepping on that scale and seeing another one bite the dust. Only another 9 to go and you'll be in ONEDERLAND!

Thanks Shawnam....I hope so. But it is exciting getting there too.

Jjjjjjay! Thanks for the compliment. You know...when I quit smoking 10 yrs ago, I joined a forum like this to do it. Made it soo much easier knowing there were others just like me.
Thats why I am here....this is the good place. I have you guys as a motivator to get me thru this. Hopefully I can pay it forward....by setting the same example as I am trying to follow.

Yes...one day I will have to get to onderland. Seems sooo far away, yet so achievable. Can't wait. You will see one happy cat then!!! Look at you! You are already there! Way to go!!!!! Lucky dawg!

Thanks again!

Congrats on the weight lost so far!!! I actually thought I'd posted on your thread... but no lol.

Loving the positive vibes oozing out of your journal!!!

How'd you like learning the free weights at the gym?

Thanks Luz! (love the nick!)

I'm feeling great....gotta spread the positivitey. When I'm down, I'll be sure to be here looking for that pick me up! :) In the meantime, its make hay while the sunshines!

As for the free weights....not yet. I'm still on the machines. A friend told me to take a couple of months to build up my simple muscles to prepare myself for freeweights. The machines basically work on isolated muscle groups from what I've been told, where as freeweights incorporate a lot of muscles....for balance, stability etc.

Funny you asked....I just inquired about a personal trainer for some instruction on free weights yesterday in fact lol. The girl was nice enough to let me know about free free weight familiarization sessions they have. So my first introduction to free weights should be next Thursday. Can't weight!

Thanks again and have a great weekend (long weekend here!)

What a great attitude you have -- happy and upbeat! You will be in onederland in no time at all. I agree with you on the oatmeal -- it starts the day right and sticks with you all morning.

Thats awesome that you gym has a class for free weights. I'm alway nervous about using them because I'm afraid I'll hurt myself lifing wrong. I have some small hand weights and a medicine ball, and those are easy enough, but when you start lifing your max to failure, thats when you have to have form down.

Flumes, as a few of the others already have mentioned, and I will also, really
like the way you write, and am truly enjoying the positive energy that is
coming from your words (actually it is the energy behind the words) !!!

I am also a male on this forum, and there aren't that many, so it is also a
pleasure to meet you here, not that I don't like females, but balance is the
key in life isn't it?

Anyway, I wanted to congratulate you on your current results. Also wanted to
mention that you have taken the best path that there is for weight loss, which
is going to the gym! Weight training + cardio training = massive burning of that
unwanted body fat that is stored inside our fat cells!

I wish I had a forum like this when I was 16, which was 24 years ago, actually
23, because it is my 40th b-day in a few days! I had to lose my 110 pounds
of unwanted body fat the old-fashioned way, proper nutrition, cardio, and
weight training!

Wait, it is still the same today isn't it? Yes, but today we have forums like
these where we can support each other and share what we have learned.
The mistakes, the successes, the strategies that can help every one of us
take the next step toward creating a lean, healthy, muscular body that is
overflowing with vitality every moment of our life.

My secret to going from 285 to 175 in one year (in addition to cardio and
weight training) is 5 average sized meals with only whole-food, that had
a ratio of 75% fresh veggies, fresh fruit, and whole grains, with about 25%
lean protein (chicken breast, turkey breast, lean beef, lean pork, etc.) or sea
food (fish, shelfish). All these 5 meals were about the same size and were
eaten every three hours of the day.

Yes, I did count the calories a few times so that I would know what size
my meals should be in the beginning, but then it became second nature,
and for 15 years I just make my portions by looking at them, and saying to
myself, Yes, this seems like the perfect sized meal for the next 3 hours!!!

This might take some time to adjust to, but proper nutrition is 50% of
reaching your ideal weight. Cheat meals (around 3-4 times per week are
okay) but best if eaten during the first two meals, and best if eaten during
breakfast. If this approach is used, reaching your ideal body weight and then
maintaining it will be a breeze.

later, hope this helps you in some way, later :driving:

I really love using weights in the gym!! I have a trainer though so he keeps an eye on me to make sure I don't kill myself lol. Still use machines too though!! They still give you an amazing workout!

Have an awesome long weekend (you lucky duck, it's just a regular old 2 day for us!)

Loved reading your journal. Congratulations on the loss so far and keep up the good work. I'll drop by more often to say hi! Hope you are having a lovely long weekend.

Yes....and especially the steel cut oatmeal. Its totally different texture compared to the rolled oats.

:)

Thanks for the compliment Sunflower. You know its peeps like yourself that keep my positive attitude goin. So thank you!! :)

Hiya Oldschool...I agree with the possibility of hurting yourself. I'm just learning about the weightlifting stuff....(there's a ton of information out there). Again, like weight loss...it'll be slow and steady. Not going to break any lifting records, (or my back) on my first day! lol :)

Hi Alex,

Nice to meet you too. And thanks for the compliments. As long as I'm losin...I'm happy!

And a big congrats to you as well! As well as a big upcomming Happy Birthday to you to. (I got 6 yrs seniority on you! lol)

110 lbs in one year is unbelievable. Very well done sir! It looks like your regiment of exercise and nutrition has worked very well for you! Well done!
Your nutrition plan is basically the same as what I am doing now.
6 meals, 40,40,20 protein/carbs/fats macro and no (very little) processed foods.

And just like you...I don't count calories often anymore. Just when I am eating something new....for example....my wife made cabbage rolls. So I broke it dwn and figured out how much I could eat and still stay on target (without offending her lol) (Remember, you complain once, you may never have the opportunity to thank her for another meal again! lol)

"This might take some time to adjust to, but proper nutrition is 50% of
reaching your ideal weight."
I have to comment on this.....lil story. About 4 yrs ago, when my wife and I got married....the priest asked if we felt responsibility should be split 50/50 in the marriage. My wife and I looked at eachother and agreed immediately as that was what we planned. Everything 50/50....equal....right down the middle.
The priest then shook his head and explained thats one of the reasons so many marriages fail nowadays. We looked at eachother dumbfounded while the priest continued. He then added, for a marriage to work, it must be 100/100...not 50/50. And he's right. 50/50 only holds you 50% accountable for your actions, the other 50% is expectation.
As with weightloss nutrition/exercise, I think the number should be 100/100. Both important to a healthy lifestyle. 50/50 would just give me reason to eat a cheeseburger today and then say I'll work it off tomorrow! lol.

Thanks for your post and hope to touch base with you again.
Take care

Monday May 24th Journal entry.

Well...it was a pretty good weekend. Weather was fantastic and we spent most of it at the cottage. Then last nite, my wife and I went to see the band Chicago...front row seats, center stage I might add. They were awesome....great brass section! If you ever get the chance to check em out...do so. (And yes, I'm old lol)
Anyways, my diet wasnt fantastic but it wasn't bad. Weighed myself this morning and still 209...(thank gawd).
My son was thrilled when he asked me if I wanted a bowl of icecream and I said yes. He even sat on my lap (hes 7) to make sure I enjoyed it (all two ounces lol). He then cautioned me when I joking asked for another bigger scoop...."Sorry Dad...but your on a diet!" I said "You're a bigger tease than your mommy!" To which he yelled at my wife..."Mom!!! No more teasing Daddy!!! Bad Mommy! Gawd I love him! lol

Todays meals:
Gonna be a long day...up at 4:30 for work
Oatmeal with raspberries and blueberries.
(I eat that so often, I'm just gonna call it Oatmeal with R&B....sounds bluesy lol)
Snack - protein drink
Snack - fruit (apple or 2 kiwi)
Lunch - leftover steak and sweet potato.
Snack - yogurt with something maybe a few nuts
Supper - salad w/diced leftover chickenbreast, lettuce, strawberries, cucumbers, green onions, peppers.
Snack - cottage cheese and some almonds.

I don't know how many calories, but my portions are going to be small at least save for supper salad. It will be a super supper salad. (Say that three times fast!)

And lotsa water today...thats a given.

:) Have a great day kids!!! :)

As with weightloss nutrition/exercise, I think the number should be 100/100. Both important to a healthy lifestyle. 50/50 would just give me reason to eat a cheeseburger today and then say I'll work it off tomorrow!

In that context, you are absolutely right! Definitely giving both proper nutrition
and exercise 100% is what is most effective. I don't even know why I wrote
the 50% to be honest. This is why it is so valuable to get feedback from
folks that are wiser than you are in certain areas, i.e. the weak areas we
all seem to have...lol

By the way, I don't take all the credit for my weight loss success, it was mostly
my mentor that was helping me to adjust my approach on a weekly basis, and
that was helping me to lower my body fat percentage and not my scale weight.

When I look back on that year from May 1994 to May 1995, there is no doubt
that this distinction of body fat percentage/scale weight is what helped me
to go from 285 to 175. As soon as body fat percentage hit a plateau, my
trainer helped me to make adjustments in my weight loss program.

The first plateau, he recommended starting to do double-daily-cardio, and
I started walking in the evening, before my last meal of the day. And when
I hit the next plateau, he taught me how to shift calories, and how to shift
my protein/carbs intake.

When I reached my ideal weight in May 1995, he helped me to make
adjustments to my nutrition and exercise strategy, and suggested that
I keep studying information about motivation, nutrition, and exercise, and
continue to track my body fat percentage every month, and if it starts
to increase that I start tracking it weekly, until I get it back down.

I think having a mentor is what helped me to succeed in the long run, and
I am obvioulsy very grateful to him for helping me out. He did get paid for
these consultations, but the value he provided me was and is priceless.

Since you are going to the gym on a regular basis, maybe you will also get
to know someone that is a natural body builder, and that will share some
strategies with you that will increase your knowledge in this area.

Obviously genetics plays a role, but anyone that has massive muscle mass,
and a low body fat percentage, without using steroids or any other drugs
is obvioulsy is doing something very right in the area of nutrition and exercise.

This is what my best friend, who is a psychologist told me on my 24th
birthday, and before that he told something that changed my entire life,
which is that I was not living in the present moment, and that was the root
of all my problems, i.e. -- I wasn't tracking my current reality on a daily
basis, and could not make wise choices because of this.

Anyway, look forward to reading your diary, and thanks once more about
that distinction between 50/50 and 100/100, that is profound!

I like Chicago and I'm not old. At least not as old as you. LOL! Jokes aside, they are great, aren't they? Since you saw them in Canada, are they touring?

Of all the things I miss from that part of the world, blueberries probably top the list. I am from New Hampshire and I spent most summer (until I went off to college) weekend picking blueberries with my cousins. We would put blueberries in EVERYTHING. But I especially miss them in my muesli.

Your son sounds adorable.

Hope you are having a lovely Monday!

I live on a border town to the U.S., (Michigan) and frequent the U.S. often for daily shopping etc. The border is literally 2 minutes from my house.
They played at the Casino there, (about 10 minute drive) and it was a small sold out crowd. (1500 people) Yes, they are touring. Chicagothebanddotcom. They are doing alot of charity for breast cancer awareness.

As for wild blueberries, we get tonnes up here too....the problem is your out there picking them with black bears who also like blueberries but like people just as much....especially with blueberries lol. Really gotta keep your eyes open.
But yes, blueberries are super healthy and really low cal! :)

Have a great day 'kiddo'! lol
