Hi everyone. Sorry to be absent for so long (over a month, I guess). Let me get the apologies and excuses out of the way first.
As I mentioned in my last few posts, I had a huge software project due, and I simply could not miss the deadline. Basically, I was in charge of writing the bonus system for hundreds of employees in the bank where I work. I knew I would have time for finishing up the software and working out, and that was about it. So I had to give up my online "habits" and as a result, I went AWOL for a month. I missed you all, but sometimes we have to make these kinds of choices. I made the deadline, and even though the project isn't quite finished yet, I'm over the "hump."
I imagine you're wondering about the fires. The Witch Creek fire came perilously close to where we live, within about 7 miles. Yesterday morning, we were pretty sure we would have to evacuate. In fact, I went and picked up Marlene from the school where she teaches in Oceanside (they hadn't cancelled classes yet). We looked around for hotels to go to, but everything was all booked up all the way to Los Angeles.
To make things more complicated, I had to deal with my 97 year old mother with dementia. The home where she stays was going to evacuate, and she would have ended up in a big room with everyone else. She panics in situations like that, so I picked her up and brought her home with me. We were watching the TV late into the night, expecting that any minute we would get the order to evacuate. Our plan was to go to Marlene's brother's house in south San Diego. By 11:30 pm, we were so tired we just decided to go to sleep and chance it.
This morning, the wind had died down comletely, and that was our salvation. If it had kept on blowing the way it did the previous night, we would not only be evacuating, but Encinitas would very likely be on fire as well. By this afternoon, it was clear that we we were pretty much out of danger.
The air is pretty bad, but as long as you stay inside and keep all the doors and windows shut, it's tolerable.
All in all the city and county of San Diego did a pretty darned good job. The evac centers were well run, and even the local media did a great job in keeping everyone informed. Considering that 500,000 people were evacuated in San Diego County, things went, and are going, remarkable smoothly. Qualcomm Stadium and Del Mar Fairgrounds, the biggest evac centers, are models of efficiency. Those of you who know me know I'm a Democrat, but I have to give credit this time to the leaders in San Diego and also Schwarzenegger, who came down to SD right away and made sure the state was doing its part.
While we were prepared for an evacuation, we weren't as prepared as we should have been. Specifically, we need to digitize all our photo albums. It just isn't practical to carry out 200 lbs. of photo albums to the car at a moment's notice. And we need to digitize our important documents as well, so that all we have to take out is a CPU and maybe a few CD's.
As for me, I've been doing fairly well, though no closer to my goal. Basically I've been in a maintenance mode the last month, holding steady at around 221 lbs. Unfortunately, my weight training went to hell in a handbasket during the last 5 weeks. For the first 3 weeks I just let it go (Sorry, Steve, I know that's anathema to you, but that's the way it was). Then, when I finally got back into it, I screwed up some tendons in my elbow, so I can barely curl 15 pounds. My elbow's still a bit sore, but I'm going to get back into my weight lifting, come hell or high water.
I have been keeping up my bike riding at least. Last Saturday I did my second century, in less than 5 1/2 hours, which is not bad for an old fart like me. I averaged 18.6 mph for the whole time. So my lower body is as strong as an ox; my upper body has gone to pot.
Let me be the first to say this is not an ideal situation. The whole idea of doing nothing but biking cardio for hours at a time is unbalanced, and ultimately not very healthy for you. I know that; I did it anyway. But now I'm going to get back to a more balanced approach. I'll still do the biking for 6 to 8 hours a week, but I'm going to add in at least 2 sessions a week of weight training.
I'm no longer measuring everything every day, though I am weighing myself every day. I just don't trust myself not doing that. My diet has been pretty healthy, though I see myself slipping back into some bad habits -- eating more white bread, more desserts, stuff like that.
Anyway, I'll try not to be such a stranger anymore. I apologize for disappearing without a word, but I know you'll all forgive me, you're such nice people!
