Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

HOLY SHIT you're back!!:eek2:

NO, I'm not a nice person and I'm PISSED off at you! You could have been dead and we wouldn't have known! Ya at least could have told us you were going to be gone, dammit!

OK, I'm over it. Love ya, glad you're back!!! :D :hug2: :jump:

Let me be the first to say this is not an ideal situation. The whole idea of doing nothing but biking cardio for hours at a time is unbalanced, and ultimately not very healthy for you. I know that; I did it anyway. But now I'm going to get back to a more balanced approach. I'll still do the biking for 6 to 8 hours a week, but I'm going to add in at least 2 sessions a week of weight training.

Interesting. I'm sure you'll get back into the weights, no problem--at least some resistance work, with the big moves would be cool too and you probably wouldn't get injured. Funny thing? I have been weight training 3xs a week and I'm up to barbell squatting 135 lbs--and deadlifting that, too. However, this summer was a wanton, drunken, excessive one and I am back to 149 lbs. Nontheless I started a diet and exercise plan, and since I'm stronger than ever I no doubt have gained at least a couple pounds of muscle as well. I just figured I'd mention it so you wouldn't feel like you had to read anything :D Oh yeah, and I pestered Steve to help me pursue personal training as a career, and I signed up with NSCA and am waiting for my text book to come in the mail this week. If anything, I'll learn enough to train myself.

Hey TomO, so great to hear you're house was spared and that you're able to take care of your mother in the comfort of your own home. We were all worried about you.

I think people on here need to relax when they or others go away for a while. It sucks having someone you enjoy communicating with daily kind of leave but it is time consuming to come on here and sometimes it just cant be done.

Same way with the weights and working out. Sometimes life gets all consuming and you have to blow these things off. The important thing is that you get back into them after a relatively short break of between 1 and 3 months. If you let yourself go past 3 months, you're probably doomed. As to adding in some more deserts, its also nice to take a break from the strictness sometimes, as long as you monitor it so it doesnt get out of hand (I would think, if I was actually able to be strict with myself).

Be careful with the weights, you dont want to mess anything up. Its supposed to improve things so if its not then ease up a little with it or change something up.

TTYL :)

Hi Val and Blancita,
Good to hear from you two again. I missed you all, but I think I did give a warning. Anyway, I stepped on the scale this morning, and it was all the way up to 223.0. Time to get serious again.

The fires have messed with my workout schedule. I haven't been able to go biking, and it's been too chaotic to go to the gym. I think the air is still to poor to go biking, so I'll probably go to the gym today. Time to get off my ass!

We appear to be pretty much out of danger now, but the fires are now raging to the east and north of us. I-5 north is closed, right around where I ride on my longer weekend trips.

Val, you're squatting and dl'ing 135 lbs. WOW! That's impressive!

Hey, I like both your avatars!

Hi glad to see you around again. I hope you keep safe where you are, I have heard some people don't want to leave their homes when they should. Not much worse than burning to death if you ask me!! But i hope it doesn't get to you!!:hug2:

Thanks, good to see all of you again too. Yes, we're pretty safe now, unless the Santa Anas start up again. Unfortunately, in this fire, one person's safety is another person's peril. The fire that threatened us is only about 5% contained, and is now getting close to joining another fire to the north.

Actually, the evacuation compliance in this fire was pretty darn good, despite what you may have read in the media. Almost everyone left when they were told. Yes, there were a few stragglers here and there, but I would say more than 99% of all people followed the mandatory evacs.

Thanks for your well-wishes!

Yo old man! :p

It's great to hear from you. I knew you were going to be gone for a while due to your last posts before you left. No sweat!

And it's expected that life will get in the way of perfect programs once in a while.... sounds like you've got the right attitude. Let the past lie where it belongs and move forward.

How's the elbow? Still hurting. I wouldn't do anything too strenuous until that's healed up. Test it, but if it hurts, stop.

That's some crazy crap about the fires!!!! Talk about a stress. I was watching it on television and it made me realize how unprepared I am for a catastrophic event such as that. At the very least, I want to purchase a fireproof safe. I'm not a materialistic person, so I don't have much that I care about. I'd probably grab my computer since I have years and years of research on it.

Glad to hear the danger subsided!

Oh, your first post back you mentioned something like bike riding alone is not healthy. The hell it ain't! Considering the fact that you maintained your weight, I think you'll be fine. Don't sweat it.

Good to see you back in here. Do you think you'll stick around or are you still busy for a while?

Hi Steve, thanks for dropping by.

I'm going to go to the gym today and see how the elbow is. I suspect it'll be OK with very low weights. I'll just have to build it back up again. One of the problems with being an "old man" -- you don't heal nearly as fast.

The evac list -- it's one of those things that we get in our minds, but when the moment comes, we inevitably come up short. Yes, I would absolutely grab my computer, since all my photography is on it. I do have off-site backup for it, though.

What I meant about bike riding alone not being healthy -- I should have explained. Yes, it does keep the weight off. However, long rides, without supplementation, can deplete your calcium levels considerably. I actually felt healthier when I was doing 5 days a week of interval training and weights -- it was a balanced program that was probably much better for me.

The thing is, I really love cycling, and unfortunately for my body, I really like long distance cycling. My "short" rides are between 35 and 40 miles, and my weekend rides are always around 75 to 100 miles.

I realize that if i don't get back to weight lifting, I'll end up with great legs and a pathetic torso -- not what I really want.

And, of course, "health" is a relative thing. Being able to keep up with a bunch of 20 somethings in velcro on racing bikes is, I guess, a mark of good health. But I also have to measure it internally, and I'm not where I should be.

I'm still really busy -- but I'll try to be more of a regular visitor.

PHEW!!!!!!!!!!!! I was so worried about you and now Bruce and Beth have you heard from them??? I'm so happy to hear your family is okay!! Don't sweat the losing weight stuff right now, as I know oh to well what big work projects can do to oneself, I have that often as well. At least your staying at a set weight and not putting on, so YEAH to that! Keep me posted on the fires and if they end up switching direction we know that can happen so fast too. Well lots of love to you and your family Tom, I've missed you BIG TIME!!! HUGS!!!:hug2::hug2:
Kim

Thanks you guys. I just finished cutting away a lot of brush, and now my elbow is really shot, so it seems like no weights today -- guess I'll have to stick to cardio alone.

Haven't heard at all from Bruce and Beth, and I lost their email (not sure I ever had it, actually).

Hey, it's been forever! I still can't believe how much weight you've lost, it's so great!

Holy, I can't even imagine cycling for that long! My 20 min bike ride to work feels like it'll never end :p lol... well, going to work isn't so bad, it's the biking back from work that's worse because all I want is to be home right away, lol. However, I do enjoy biking, it's a lot better than being on the treadmill and whatnot.

I just got back into the whole weight loss thing. I kinda just stopped for a while, gained a couple pounds and then maintained. Now I've lost those couple pounds and I'm a lot happier now that I'm doing something about my weight again.

Sorry to hear that your elbow isn't doing well. At least you can still do your cardio :) I went on a walk on my lunch break yesterday and I wore shoes that I used to go on walks a lot with last year but haven't worn them since... needless to say the back of my heels bloodied my socks and the inside of my shoes. I wanted to go on the treadmill last night but my heels were so sore, so I couldn't. So I need to wait for it to heal a bit before I can do my treadmill and stuff, but I'll do my DDR! At least it's something :)

Good luck with your cardio and with the healing of your elbow :)

Thanks, Risty. Hey, the main thing is we maintained while we took a break!

My elbow is really a mess. If it doesn't get better soon, I think I'll see the doctor.

Thanks for dropping by!

Well the scale gods smiled on me today, as I went back down to 220.4. Down 2.6 pounds in one day -- pretty cool. LOL, I know it's all bs, but it's still fun to see it go in the right direction.

I did a 45 min. workout at the gym yesterday -- first time doing cardio there in 45 days. I did interval training on the elliptical. Just as an experiment, in the middle of the workout, I wanted to see how long I could sustain 162 beats per minute, which is 95% of my max heartrate. I made it for 5 minutes straight, which means the cycling has kept me in pretty good shape! I guess it's also increased my lactic acid tolerance, because a few months ago, that's what would have killed me after a couple of minutes. When you're chugging up a huge hill, you can't just stop the way you would on an elliptical (well, you can, but you feel like you can't). So you grit your way through it.

I did eat healthy yesterday, and cut down on the amounts. That's why I weigh myself every day. If I go on the high side, I immediately cut back.

The air in the gym was fair, but not terrific. At least it was better than it is outside. There are still big chunks of ash floating around, and if you spend more than 5 minutes, you need to wear a mask. Biking is still impossible -- total bummer!

My elbow is a total mess. I can barely pick up a coffee cup without pain. Last night I went and got cold packs and and elbow brace. I'm going to apply the R.I.C.E. treatment diligently, and if there's no improvement a week from now, I'll go see the doc.

WOW, I can't imagine what you all are going through with the ash and mess all around, my prayers are with all of you!!

Great job Tom on keeping those scales guessing and sticking with a good plan at the gym, even with your circumstances. And I'm sorry you can't bike currently, that must really suck!!! But, maybe this is the change up your body needs to get going again!

Have a good day today, and stay safe!
Hugs
Kim

Hey, good job on the exercising! You always do such great workouts. I'm really watching every calorie and making sure I exercise everyday (at least every weekday anyways... so far). The scale gods are smiling on me too! It's been a long time, but they're finally happy :D I hope it stays that way :D
