Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

My sister-in law- is into mountain biking. Always in marathons and stuff. I can barely walk up there but she does constantly! And she bkes and swims. Peolpe who bike are amazing to me. Keep it up Tom and I'm sure you'll be great by your birthday!

Thanks Mechelle. Actually my goal for this birthday is 227.0, so I really do have a good chance of making it, as long as I can keep the Scale Gods off balance.

The bikers who amaze me are the ones in the Tour de France. I can't imagine enduring that kind of pain.

Too bad there's so much drugs involved in biking -- it really diminishes the sport.

Hey Tom-I sure love your humor!! Nice bike ride, I'm going to have to ride after my weights today. Ooooh, I LOVE museums--dammit if only I was rich, I'd fly down there so we could look at the Dead Sea scrolls together.

I didn't know what Lava cake was......I never had it! Now I want it! YUM!

LOL, that's a nice pic, for sure. But where's the single malt?? :D

Oh that picture should be X-Rated. Good to see your workout continues to impress

Thanks, Cannon. Hope you're having a great Friday the 13th!

Good morning Tom...hope your instep feels better....that sounds VERY painful! Sounds like you are on your way to your birthday goal weight!

Hi, Beth. I hate those instep cramps. You can't get rid of them by walking, like you can a regular cramp in your quads or hams or calves. Ever try stretching your instep? Not so easy to do!

Exercise Log - 7/13/2007

Today was Weights 3 day - upper body:

View attachment 3914

Time: 26 minutes
270 Calories

I was going to do cardio, but then I thought about Steve and his warning about managing fatigue. LOL, I'd like to blame it on him, but actually I got a bit lazy. Tomorrow I'm planning on doing a 3 or 4 hour ride as training for the century next weekend, so I figured I could get away with no cardio today.

Not only that, but I'm sitting here drinking a double scotch as I'm writing this. Fortunately, the lava cake is nowhere in site, or I might go completely to pot!

Hey Tom, this is a completely random question.....

I've read a couple of times that even when you have a calorie deficit, if alcohol is present (not sure the type matters?) the body will chose to burn that off first before burning fat stores....I have no idea if that's true or not...but assuming it is true...when you calculate your intake/output to get your deficit for a day when you add alcohol to the calories do you adjust for that into your "calories burned" ....like I said "random"....LOL

Cym, I've heard that, too. I don't really make any adjustments, though. Typically, I consume a glass of wine with dinner, which is only about 80 calories. Maybe that's why my metabolism is a bit on the "low" side. :)

Weight 226.2 - The 3 count for Round 6. Perhaps the Scale Gods got complacent when they heard about my Lava-Cake-Single-Malt Diet.
LMAO.

Yeah! I reckon that would be the reason. :D

I've heard that too. You made me wonder if there's any evidence for it? Sounds to me like our bodies really do burn the alcohol first - but I don't know if that is a good thing!!

Weight 226.2 - This is the 4 count for Round 6. The Scale Gods better get their act in order by tomorrow, or they lose this Round!

Yesterday's food came to 2,492 calories:
Fat: 79 gm, 28%; 14 gm saturated
Carbs: 292 gm, 44%; 44 gm fiber
Protein: 131 gm, 21%
Alcohol: 22 gm, 6%

NARM: 2,319 c
Exercise: 270 c
Deficit for the day: 97 c
Deficit for Round 6: 9,480 c
Deficit for July: 5,508 c

This morning we had to get up early to drop my mother in law off so that Marlene and I could go see the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Before going, I was wondering if the exhibit was going to be any good. I mean, what can you do with a piece of scroll that is in a language you'll never understand?

I'm happy to say the exhibit just blew us away. There was a ton of historical stuff there, and the exhibits were first rate. Marlene and I took almost 3 hours to go through it all. We were truly impressed.

After a short nap in the afternoon, I took a training ride. I took Highway 1 up through Oceanside, through Camp Pendleton, onto the abandoned Highway 101, and went almost to the San Onofre Power Plant. I had to turn around, because I didn't want to get caught in the dark.

All together, I was riding for 4 hours and 20 minutes. I went 61.8 miles. The HR monitor said I burned 3,725 calories, but I'm only logging 40 calories a mile, or 2,472 calories. Max HR was 157 (93% of max - ran into some big hills), and average HR was 126 (75% of max).

I have to say, my quads are pretty sore as I'm writing this. I'm gulping down a protein shake as fast as I can, and I took 8 Thermolyte pills during the trip. I think if I can just get some carbs and protein into me quick, I'll be OK.

You deserve a break papi. Take it easy on yourself. I honestly think the weight will come off at the same pace whether or not you do that last leg of exercise every week or not. I noticed before that too much made my body plateau after a while. I think a break is good for that.

Weight: 224.8 - Round 6 is over, and by a knockout!

The Scale Gods didn't actually have a chance after yesterday. On the one hand, my calories were high, at 3,239:

Fat: 115 gm, 31%; 27 gm saturated, 7%
Carbs: 437 gm, 51%; 38 gm fiber
Protein: 132 gm, 16%
Alcohol: 10 gm, 2%

However, with my NARM of 2,317 calories, plus 2,472 calories from exercise, I ended the day with a whopping 1,497 calorie deficit. That gave me a 10,978 calorie deficit for Round 6, and a 7,481 calorie deficit for July so far.

I was a little sore last night, quads mainly, but this morning I feel pretty good. No cramping at night, which was a blessing. Today will be a lazy day, so I expect my weight to creep up a bit tomorrow.

Round 7 -- here I come!

Weight: 224.8 - Round 6 is over, and by a knockout!

I literally said, "Oh my god" when I saw this--WOWZAHS!! Also, 4 and 1/2 hours?!?! Jeez! Thanks for exercising for us both--my wasp-stung swollen kankle is still all swollen and I haven't worked out since Thursday morning, BUT I'm going to hop on my bike and ride as soon as I finish getting through 20 million diaries. And put on sunscreen!

BUT I'm going to hop on my bike and ride as soon as I finish getting through 20 million diaries. And put on sunscreen!

Speaking of which, I found an excellent sun screen - Vanicream Sunscreen Sport SPF35. You can get it thru amazon.com. It turns out a lot of the more popular brands of sunscreen wash off very easily, and don't have the UVA protection they claim. This is one of ten that came out on top for protections in a recent Consumer Reports study. I put it on at the beginning of my ride, and that was it - no burns, no irritation.

Geez how could the scales NOT go down with all that darn biking your doing, I don't think I could bike that long by myself, I would get bored and I hate getting bored. I'm so proud of your accomplishments, your almost at 220, it won't be long that's for sure!! Keep up the good work!
Kim

Hope you enjoyed your "lazy day" and got some good rest....and just because I'm not saying (again) that I fully expect you to be at your goal weight well before the next year doesn't mean I'm not still thinking it LOL...hey, what did you decide about the dunk tank? I wish someplace near me offered that at less than 30 bucks, I'd be standing in line.

Hi, Kim, & thanks. I have to say, I really don't get bored. I love the scenery, and just the feeling. It's a "being in the moment" sort of thing, and the fact that it lasts so long is just an extra bonus.

Hi, cym. Just got back from my late lunch with steak and grilled shrimp. Yummy! I'm still trying to find out where I can get that test. $29 is quite a bargain for that.

OMG yes!! That truly is a knockout. Congratulations.

I love that bonus. What an amazing and wonderful result from your decision to pursue the original thought about a bike.

Weight 225.8 - I expected to go up a bit from yesterday's low, and this is not too bad at all.

Food yesterday came to 1,871 calories. I just wasn't that hungry.

Fat: 80 gm, 38%; 29 gm saturated, 14% (a big steak for a late lunch)
Carbs: 151 gm, 30%; 21 gm fiber
Protein: 145 gm, 32%
Alcohol: 0

I did zero exercise yesterday.

NARM: 2,311 c
Daily Deficit: 440 c
July Deficit: 7,481 c

I'm half way through the month, and so far, things are looking pretty darned good in terms of my goals. My weight goal was 227.5, and I think I'll be well below that. My average BP last month was 117/72; my average BP so far this month is 113/70 - a pretty nice improvement. Body fat percentage last month averaged 24.0%; this month, 23.5%. Exercise time last month averaged 69 minutes a day; this month, 81 minutes a day. Last month, I averaged 801 calories a day in exercise; this month, 825 calories a day. Finally, last month, my average deficit was 394 calories a day; this month, 528 calories a day. That helps explain why the Scale Gods and GOM have had such a hellacious time in July.

ps. Thanks, Felici!
