Dog Walkers Club

Any other dog lovers & walkers out there? Could walking benefit you and Fido?

I'm Jen, an animal lover in general, and mom to a dog, 2 cats, and a hamster(I also am Mom to 2 beautiful girls, but that is for another thread). I have an Australian Shepherd named Finnegan who requires LOTS of Exercise. Australian Shepherd are similiar to Border Collies in their intelligence, herding and energy levels. I'm hoping by having a "club" committed to walking the dog will help motivate me to do it more often, and more regularly, thereby making both him and me happier and healthier!

hey, I have a boxer/pointer cross who I walk daily. I try to run with her sometimes as well but she's not the greatest for controlled running. she wants to bolt most of the time.
brisk walking is great whether it's with your dog or not.

Finnegan is just over 2 yrs and we are continuing to work on pulling.I have read that Caesar Millan book and agree with the Alpha leader idea, and when I'm more confident he does tend to do better. I have also invested in a prong collar and he walks MUCH better with it, than without it.(It's only on when we are walking). Sometimes I htink my Aussie things he is a terrier because he wants to bolt when he sees squirrels and rabbits, although he gets excited when he sees other dogs and people that he wants to "say hello to".

:D

my dog was horrible for pulling. I took her to obedience school and everything. that didn't do anything for her pulling. it was to the point where it felt like she was pulling my shoulder out of joint every time I walked her.

I was doing some research on how to stop it when I came across an article on what's called a head halty. I went out and bought one and now I can walk her no problem. it works the same way as a harness on a horse. try one out, I really recommend them for dogs with that problem..

Oh yeah! I know what that is. I had one for my german shepherd, but I'm sure its teh wrong size. I might look into that . . THANX!

I'm post weight-loss by over a year, but exercising my dog played a key role in helping me to lose weight, and perhaps an even more important role in helping me to control my weight now.

Most days I cycle with Wolfy (my siberian husky) rather than walk - usually four miles mainly cross country - but its all extra activity. I take him everywhere with us that I can - and having 30 kg of husky pulling at the leash is good exercise in itself. I also sometimes still run with him, but not as often as I maybe should.

Getting that puppy acted as the trigger for a change in lifestyle. Changing my diet and eating habits, and joining a gym for a year also helped - but without my dog, I probably wouldn't have made those changes.

I also like hiking with him when we get the chance. The furthest trail that we have walked so far was the Weaver's Way in Norfolk - 62 miles over three days. Thats dog walking ;)

Well, I feel really bad :(. I've been so focused on getting as much vigorous exercise being involved in the Halloween Challenge, I've not had the time in the mornings to take Finnegan for his walk. I almost always have the intention of walking him in the evening, but with work, making dinner, helping with homework, running kids around, etc. , that he hasnt even gotten ONE walk this week . And he is such a good boy - even for having all the energy that an Aussie is famous for, he rarely gets into trouble at home. (He has free range of the house). Maybe I should include walking the dog at least 5 times a week as part of my personal goals. Just never seem to have the time for all the things I have to do, but need to make time for the important things, and Finnegan certainly is an important part of my life.

nice idea for a club here :)

I try walk our pooch at least 5 times a week normally those 5 days our weekdays we do a circuit around a few blocks which is about 1.6 miles.

My dog was from a rescue center. we have NO idea what breed he is. he definitely has some German shepherd in him you can tell in his face, tail and colours but we don't know what else. Maybe beagle or something, cause he's half the size of German shepherd, and has short really silky hair with fluffy ears.

Walking him makes me feel good, and i know he loves it. even though his little legs get a bit tired near the end. I take my ipod and walk quite a fast pace.

ill get some photo's up soon !

You didn't tell me you started a dog walking club! I would love to join. We go on at least one super long walk per week, but should do more (together.)

Went to an agility trial on saturday as I think Fin would love it and would be great exercise for both he & I. I'm pretty good at gettin him walks sun- tues as those my my days off, but harder to fit it in the other days.

In order for this club to be "successful", I really need to put some more thought into it. Life has been so hectic for me more, and it seems I have less and less time for normal things, like writing the bills, but my dog need not be neglected. I will work this weekend to have a better definition for this club and try to come up with challenges and other fun criteria for us dog lovers/walkers out there!

Will be posting SOON!

You mean like a chart/graph? That would be great. I just got back from takin Finnegan for a walk- it's been so long, he is worn out now. We got home, just in time- it's starting to rain.

Hi Everybody,

I'd love to join the dog walking club. I've been looking for extra motivation to exercise, and this sounds like a great idea. I have two little devils at home. Daisy, my 14 year old Lopsaopsa, and Gully my three year old Chihuahua.

I'm just about to take them on a walk, so I'll post how far we went when I come back. I won't be able to get any treats for the five a day out of the week walk, but I'll get it next time. :D
