Diary of an Overweight Coach

Another hot day today but at least the wind has changed enough that there is less smoke in the air. up to 300 pushups for the day so far but won't make it to the gym till tonight. Bike I will do this afternoon.

hubby and eldest son are in Sydney for the week, leaving the other 2 here with me. Fridge is also out of action for the week.

Watched a Documentary on living with Autistic kids last night, it was all sooo familiar having 3 ASD kids of my own, 2 of which are also ADHD

Wish I knew which age groups I am assigned to coach for football this season so I can get a head start on preparing my coaching plan.

I haven't popped in in a while.

Sorry someone was being so negative in the WL challenge. I guess I missed that. I like to talk a little trash, but call me out if I offend.

I will be stealing your home workout that you made for your team.

Keep kicking butt on your training!

How's the diet part going?

diet is steady, took a peak at the scales and they have not moved.

Youngest son decided this week he needs to loose a bit of fat before the football season begins because he can no longer see his abs lol, the vanity of 13 year old boys, his current weight will make he paediatrician happy that he actually gained weight but a bit of extra cardio won't hurt his fitness levels ahead of the season especially considering he plays in two separate competitions, the first is the normal local comp and the other is with his Special Olympics team.

I'm going to steal your cct too True, i already do something like that as an add on a couple of times a week, but there a couple of new moves in there for me. Thanks

You're doing the work and the scales will catch up. Do you do tape measurements? I would think a waist measurement would certainly help you see progress with as much lifting volume as you have, I would think weight would take a back seat to measurements.

That's a good problem for him to have. When I was 13 my "abs" spilled over my football pants. The only thing that has changed there is I don't have football pants anymore.

Are you talking about what I'd call soccer, American football, or Aussie rules football?

Football is what Americans call Soccer (you actually use your feet, the World Game), Gridiron is what Americans call Football, Aussie Rules is called Aerial Ping Pong (The Victorians and South Australian member may disagree), Rugby league is what those in NSW and Queensland usually call football (Unless they have southern influences), Rugby Union is the game Rugby League players are not tough enough to play.

I have been involved with all of them (Either as a coach, player or in a sports medicine role) except Gridiron which will soon change, as I may be getting involved with strength coaching for a team down the coast.

I track bodyfat % with calipers every 2 months or so and track trends with bioelectric impedance each weigh in. so far fat is trending down, your right scales are secondary objective but important for the challenge.

What I call football should really be called handegg, but I like gridiron. We use gridiron to refer to the field only. I've played baseball, handegg, and basketball as a kid. Soccer is much more popular in the US now than when I was a kid.

GRRRR my dog makes me sooo angry sometimes, as most of you have already worked out, my home training area is in a large machinery shed, well I went to spend some time on the bike this morning and was just getting lost in my own little world when there was this almighty racket of barking, hissing, and banging on the tin shed wall looking about 2 meters away was my bloody dog having a fight with one of the resident snakes. NOT HAPPY, had to get of the bike to get out of the way of the ensuing fight to try and call the dog away from the snake, I like having that snake in the shed (2 metre carpet snake) and the bigger one which hangs around in the roof. He slithered away safely, I just hope the bites are not fatal for the snake later.

Having Carpet Snakes in my workout area = No Red Belly Blacks, No Eastern Browns, No King Browns (Mulga Snake), No Whip Snake, No Taipans, No Death Adders etc. in my workout area.

of course I still have to be careful outside, a couple of years ago I came withing an inch of being bitten by a Taipan in my driveway when it bit my push bike.

some of the snakes which have been seen on my property are on this list including the No 2 and 3.

Think I will give the bike a miss for the rest of the morning and try again tonight.

PS. another version of the list but with pics my closest town is listed for Taipan because they are common here.

Sorry your workout was interrupted. It's hard to teach a dog the concept of good snake. We have copperheads, cottonmouths, and rattlesnakes to contend with here, but Australia wins all the contests for critters that can kill you.

It's always been one of my dreams to go to Australia. I don't know about that anymore. lol! Hopefully the snake is ok though!

I couldn't work out with snakes none venomous or otherwise!

I came across a red belly once down the horses and I had to chose between snack or electric fence so yep I took the zap from the fence instead scared me!!

The snakes are one of the main reasons my mother will never visit lol, not many snakes in Canberra. I am ok with snakes and spiders in general (I grew up in a big funnel web area) but the mere thought of a rodent touching me turns me into a quivering wreck.

Finally logged 30 minutes on the bike plus another 30 minutes of football drills, gave the pushups a break today. Diet has been good today, cooked a big pot of veg + lamb soup in the crock pot. my youngest loves soup and ate more than half of it stopping me from over eating lol.

picked up a cheap 4 cd compilation from the music store to add to my collection in my workout area, nothing quite like Hard Rock to workout to :D should mean a good session tomorrow.

OMG, a snake? I would freak out big time. I even scream the house down if I see a spider! Lol

New workout music is good!!! I love it. Every time I get some new music on ipod - I just look forward to my work out much more!!

At the gym this morning it is Triceps and forearms on the menu, bike in the early afternoon followed by a football training session with my son who cannot wait for the season to begin and wants to try out my new ball rebounder, I may take the camera with me so I can post what one of my agility/ball control/speed courses looks like when I set up at the local fields.

last night I spoke to the skill coach for our clubs ladies team, and it looks like we will not only have enough players this season but also some of our good players are coming back to play :) they also definitely want me back as fitness coach which is a nice vote of confidence as the last season they played they were the fittest team in the comp with NO new injuries. This will be the first season back with this team without my friend and mentor who died last year.

As far as junior teams go I won't know which teams/ages I will be assigned to until the end of sign up at the start of next month but i think the U6 group will go to last years squirts coach (U5s) if I am kept with the same kids as last year then it will be U7s and U8 which would be a bit awkward as they play on different field sizes. I know one of the top club/regional officials would like to see me coaching older kids possibly U13s where my strength and conditioning skill will come into play rather than just skill coaching. I don't want U14s because I don't want to coach a team with my own son in it to avoid any appearance of favoritism despite a couple of parent asking. A couple of rep players in that team will be getting some private fitness coaching from me.

The club will also pay for me to do my next level of coaching license this season which will help with my tactical knowledge.

Hi Tru, Your work-rate is phenomenal! You are obviously one very popular coach by the sounds of it. Reading about your Q'Land snakes makes ours pale into insignificance. I think you have way more scary critters up there. I love snakes though & would love to have a carpet snake when our little fur balls are no longer around. I don't think we're allowed to have them as pets though. Reading about your weights has inspired me to bring out my pathetic little ones & get back into my light ones today. I'm loving getting golfing muscles! Cheers, Cate

finished at the gym but won't post my full exercise until I am done for the day.

Cate I like snakes to so I may have to tie the dog up in future when I am on the bike, or at least until winter when there will be less snake activity.

I wish all the hard work would show more :)

had a chat with a club official today and was told I will be getting an older age group probably under 12/13 boy which is the age they begin to play on a full size field without modified rules but it will still depend on player numbers.

Was feeling a bit crook in the gut last night but feeling ok this morning, and also had a muscle cramp in my Latissimus Dorsi which is unusual because when I cramp it is usually due to lack of sodium and usually it is my Gastrocnemius which cramps.

exercise yesterday was an hour in the gym and 1.5 hours doing agility/ball control drills at the practice fields.

this morning, 1.5 hours gym plus will do bike later.

logged my loss and exercise points for the challenge because it is already Friday here, now just have to wait till those in the US catch up.
