Happy New Year!!

Yay I sure had fun! (Korrie you're breathtakingly gorgeous by the way!)
I took a mini vacation right before New Year's and went from Santa Cruz to Berkeley (to stop at a Brewery with some friends, one of which was visiting from Hawaii), then I spent the night at more friends' house in West Oakland, and the next day ran around Lake Merritt (a pre-historic estuary in the middle of downtown Oakland, 3.5 miles in circumference); I then drove to Auburn to hang out with my buddy I call Marshmallow (he has a really good sense of humor), then I drove up to Nevada City to stay with more friends, Josh and Stephanie (I was there when they met, I was at their wedding in Hawaii, and I made their wedding cake from scratch, a chocolate one with strawberries). Stephanie and I went to her gym and weight trained when I was there. I drove back to hang with Marshmallow (Austin) New Year's Eve, and we drove to Sacramento for a house party. Um....I won't even talk about the kinds of people we hung out with, but the important thing is that I'm a curious bunny and an anthropologist by nature, so I truly enjoy hanging out with people from all walks of life. Sacramento sure is ROUGH! :sifone: If you don't know much about it, Marshmallow (when he used to live in Sactown) was jumped in his own neighborhood (um, which is kinda rough, by Watt and Folsom) and hit in the head with a bat....but when he went to Emergency, there were so many shooting and stabbing victims, that they couldn't see him, so he left!

Anyway, I made it safely back to Auburn where we went on a hike New Year's Day. I wasn't very hung over, I didn't get wasted and I managed several hours of sleep despite the noise of the party, and we met up with his buddy Nik. Nik sure does like me! HA! But that's another story, that evening I drove all the way from Auburn to Soquel and met up with the BF, who missed me and had a sort of epiphany about how precious I am, and what a wonderful thing he has going. We spent the night together, and the next morning he held me close, shed a few tears, and APOLOGIZED for treating me like crap for last fall. HA! I graciously accepted, and when he left for work, he said, "Goodbye, most wonderful thing in my life." How sweet!

So today, I'm glad to say, I feel great and 2008 has been stellar so far, I'm super happy and content, and I have been exercising regularly since I've been gone. I DID eat and drink too much beer, and my weight shot up very quickly to 157 lbs!!!!!!!!!!

So I pulled out my secret weapon: Raw Organic Food.

Today is Day 3 of eating a raw diet; I am not raw vegan, because I am eating raw cheese and raw shashimi grade ahi and ohno and hopefully I'll get my hands on some hamachi. But my weight has dropped dramatically; I'm already down to 153 and I can practically SEE the fat melting off. Day 1 and Day 2 were like detox days and I felt really weird, like on drugs. Today I feel much better, and it'll only get better and better. I'm no stranger to a raw diet; I first did it it in 2004 before it was cool ;) I've been counting calories and my raw diet is around 1600-1800 calories, which is ideal for me anyway, but I can never manage with cooked foods because of my appetite. Raw diets exclude all bread and simple sugars, and are full of fiber and protein, which is ideal for fat loss and the enzymes are ideal for metabolic processes.

One thing......everybody HATES a raw foodist  HAHA! Trust me! Being vegan was hard enough....not hard as in hard to do, but hard as in trying to defend your way of eating. I wasn't even an annoying one (like, I never pushed it on others or put down omnivores) and people would give me shit all the time! Plus, raw foodism kind of violates the very fundamentals of modern civilization: cooking food is equivalent to the rise of a complex society. So yeah, it can be rough, but for me it's easier because my friends all know me and they know I've done it before. The longest I held out on raw foodism was 3 months and I lost 25 lbs that stayed off for a while. That was when I was actually 11 lbs overweight (170 lbs) according to the BMI and very sad indeed. Raw foodism gave me back my vitality and took away a bunch of fat and other issues.

Anyway, wish me luck, when I get more time I'll post a day in the life of a raw diet for you to check out. I'm excited to hear about my WLF friends! OMG I wonder how many of you are closer to your goals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I could get my hands on any sushi grade fish without having to go to a restaurant I could eat it every day! I'm interested to see your 'Day in the Life of Raw Diet' post. Good to see you're doing well.

I, for one, would love to hear a "day in the life" of a raw foodist. What does it look like? How diverse are your food choices? How often do you eat?

At any rate, when you have the time, I would love to hear a typical menu.

raw food ha? well it does sound interesting. i could probably do it for a few days to clean out my system hehe.
how are things with you val. i really missed you

lena

Girl, I'm glad to see you back. I was just wondering the other day what happened to you. Glad to hear things have been going well for you, and that bf is wising up to how wonderful you are. :)

The raw food thing is great if it works for you. It certainly is healthy--no denying that.

:hug2:

Everybody hates a raw food vegan? Guilty LOL. I'm glad its working for you. I had no idea Sacramento was a rough town. Welcome back.

Welcome back Val!

We were just talking about raw food diets here at the office...one of my co-worker's friend is a raw food chef for other people...ah, the rich and famous...

I am intrigued and would be game to investigate a raw food diet. I am always interested in a healthier way to eat.

Hey VBF!! good to see you had a great time out and about on your Mini Vacation. Ahhhh back to the raw food again, well if it worked before, sure thing it will work again. I remember all those yummy foods you put out here before, half of it sounded wonderful and very, very healthy. I say more power to you, if it works for you and you like it, then by golly do it!

Happy to see things are going well on the BF front too, AHHHH he can be really sweet to you. Well girlie, let me know about the job at the winery, have you heard anymore about that?

Talk to you soon!
Hugs
Kim

Wow

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome!

Santa Cruz, especially the independent Natty Foods Store known as Staff of Life, caters to raw foodism very much so. That store has more sprouted, dehydrated & raw grain and nut goodies than I've seen anywhere else in Santa Cruz. Raw food, when you're only eating fruits and veggies and raw fish or meat (yes, there are lots of raw foodists who eat raw meat. I say YUCK but it works for them!), gets boring, fast.

So for breakfast I've been eating Lydia's Cinnamon Cereal. 1/2 cup = 270 calories, and I eat it with almond milk (this is not raw, because I can't find unpasteurized almond milk ground at low temperature. My diet is probably 90%+ raw).

Description:
"All sprouted nuts & seeds, sunflower seeds, quinoa, buckwheat, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and cinnamon. Dehydrated at low temperatures to preserve the "life force". "
Valerie says: It's really crunchy and chewy and takes a long time to chew and eat, which is a good thing because I'm typically a fast eater :( It tastes OK, but I put a tablespoon raw organic Agave syrup on it to sweeten the deal. It has 24% RDA of fiber which probably explains why I'm so satisfied after.

Snacks, I'll have fruit and/or some raw organic sharp cheddar cheese by Organic Valley. It comes in 8 oz blocks, so I cut it in half, half the halves, and half the halves again, for easy grabbing of 1 oz (110 calories).
Description: "Our raw milk sharp cheddar is minimally processed to preserve milk enzymes and proteins, then aged for 300 days for even more delectable cheddar flavor. We recommend feeding raw milk cheeses to children over the age of 2 years"
Valerie says: Even though I used to be a vegan a few years ago, this stuff is solid gold!!

For lunch I'll have these crackers, Lydia's again, with avocado, maybe another oz of cheese, and some kind of raw spread. There's a restaurant in Santa Cruz called La Vie, and it's mainly raw foods, and they've been sticking their salads, raw fresh rolls, and blueberry "cheesecake" on the shelves of the Natty Foods stores around town. I had Lydia's crackers with the "beanless" hummus, and it is quite good.
Description: "Lydia's Lovin Foods Ginger Nori Crackers have a nutritious crunch with a vegetable nori flavor. These crackers are made from nuts, seeds, herbs, spices and sea vegetables. The ginger flavor gives them a little extra zing. Ginger lovers will go nuts for these. These are great plain or can be served with the spread of your choice.

All Lydia's Organics foods and crackers are made with all organic ingredients, gluten-free and soy-free, great raw food. Try all five varieties of Lydia's Organics raw food crackers.

Ingredients: Sprouted almonds, sprouted sunflower seeds, carrots, celery, nori, parsley, sprouted flax, ginger, Himalayan Crystal Sea Salt & love. Dehydrated at low temperature to preserve "life-force". "
Valerie says: They're pretty good, but can get boring. I'm going to mix it up with lunch, probably have more salads once I find a suitable dressing.

For Dinner I've been hacking away at this 1 lb chunk of sashimi grade ahi I get from The Fish Lady, which is in Soquel and is locally owned and actually carries a large percentage of my company's wines, too. I slice a few ounces of fish and squeeze lemon juice on top, and spray with Bragg's Liquid Aminos as well. I've been also eating arugula leaves with Bragg's sprayed in my mouth because I'm really lazy right now.
Valerie says: Raw ahi makes me shudder just a TINY bit, and I use a latex glove to handle the fish while I'm cutting, but the lemon and raw soy sauce makes it taste pretty damn good. It's only a minuscule 120 calories per 3-4 oz (!) and my body digests it so easily it's ridiculous. Talk about protein! It really satisfies my hunger.

I add more raw treats if I feel like it, there are Raw Food Bars that are chocolately-good, and I have these things called "Buckwheat Chrunchies" that look terrible but taste DELICIOUS and are really satisfying:
Kaia Foods

This is only for 3 days. I'm totally going to mix it up because I plan on being raw for over a month, if possible. OH and I drink all the raw, unpasteurized Kombucha I want. Kombucha is a trip, Kombucha - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

BUT! I DO have exceptions. I'm not drinking beer, but I'm allowing myself occasional wine and champagne in social settings. When I'm at home, alone, no drinking. So far it's been very easy.

How I felt: the first day I was tired and hungry, the second I was spaced out and felt like I was on drugs, but not hungry, and today I feel great and am not hungry, and after I eat I'm satisfied. The best thing about eating raw is you can easily stop eating and you don't really get uncontrollable munchies. Oh yeah, and you lose fat like it's going out of style :)
