deadlift with support belt

ive seen people at my gym do deadlift with these belts around their waist, isent those belts to help stabilize the back or something like that?
my question is, as deadlift is an exersice to work the back (among other things) why use these? wont they take some of the stress off your back muscles and they wont be used as much.. why would you want to do that when trying to train them? :S
 
Just my opinion, but if you are performing exercises with proper form, you don't need a support belt. Evo, may have more insight on this because of his training. But unless you are deadlifting enormous amounts of weight, I don't think you should use a belt. Your body already has a "built-in" belt. JMO.
 
The belt is actually to help give you a wall on your front side, by your abdominals to keep from getting a hernia. I don't use a belt at all, but it's advisable to use one once you get around 95%+ of your 1RM.
 
The belt is just a reinforcer but often gets turned into a crutch. The only time I put on a belt is when I'm either maxing out and I'm very near my 1RM or I'm pushing out near-maximal singles. A good belt can add some weight on your squat but won't add much to the deadlift.

Don't beat yourself up Azn... You are ahead of the game already by virtue of the fact that you are actually doing deadlifts. Just be patient and keep working at it. Those numbers will come up.

Karky, I have been with this forum since it started, and have watched years of bad advice flowing from its members. It warms me cockles to read great advice from literally everyone on a thread. Shows that knowledge is advancing and/or we are attracting more experienced lifters. YAY! :D
 
ah! that clears out my mind on the topic

i had the same doubt with weight lifters wearing belts a few months back

anyways is this support belt to be used for maxing out on core-related exercises or are they used generally for any type of heavy weight lifting

also can hernia be prevented with some good abdominal conditioning
