David B's Journal

My name is David and I think that this journal idea is good. I need to be accountable to myself, and if I get help from other it will be that much better. I am 28 years old and 205 pound @ 5'5". I have gotten out of control and now I am trying to gain the control back. My doctor recently told me that I have type 2 diabetes. This is a scary thought as I have three young kids @ home. The good thing about it though is the doctor told me that I can get rid of it with proper eating and exercise.

I told myself that it is time to do this and here I am. I have started going to the gym within the last week and have made it 6 days out of 7. I know that it is important to have one day of rest. I want to try and start a strength training program as well. I have looked @ Steve's recommendation in the exercise forum and I thing I am going to start doing that. So now I think that it is going to be something like this:

Monday: Weight lifting
Tuesday: Cardio
Wednesday: Weight lifting
Thursday: Cardio
Friday: Weight lifting
Saturday: Cardio

I will try this out and see how it goes. I have figured out that the best time for me to go to the gym is @ 10:00 pm. I would rather work out in the morning, but this will have to work for now. I am also trying to get my eating in check and this is what I have been eating as of now:

Breakfast: 3 egg whites, green pepper, onion omelette. A piece of Wheat toast with peanut butter.

Snack: cup of cottage cheese, piece of fruit

Lunch: Turkey sandwich on wheat bread and a banna

Snack: a chicken wrap on whole wheat tortilla (lettuce, mustard, half of chicken breat)

Dinner: Some sort of protein and vegtables

I am trying to drink as much water as I can through the day and it seems to be working.

Today was a good day. I ate pretty well and I made it to the gym tonight. For food I had:
Breakfast: Egg White Omelette ( Green pepper, onion, and Salsa)
Snack: Whole wheat tortilla with a tbl spoon of Peanut butter and a bannana
Lunch: Turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread and cottage cheese
Dinner: A chicken Wrap ( shredded chicken, black beans, and corn) Whole wheat tortilla

I went to the gym tonight and workout with my Brother In Law, I wanted to see what kind of workout he does. I had a pretty good upper body workout. I like the sound of the one that Steve has set out in the exercise section. I think I am going to start that out next week.

I felt good today, it has been a lot of fun to see the changes that have already started, can't wait for the future changes though.

Hey David, just found your journal and am "checking in". Keep up the good work man. You'll love the changes as you see yourself progress!

Maestro, Thank you for stopping by.

Today was an alright day. Today was my wifes family reunion and I tried to do my best at the eating aspect. The only slip up that I had was for dinner tonight. All there was to eat was Pizza and I had two pieces. O well I guess it could be worse. I like this eating every couple of hours, I am just trying to get different ideas on what to eat for my meals and snacks, I have been searching around for different ideas. If anyone reads this and has some good ideas for meals and snacks please let me know.

I made it to the gym tonight and did the elliptical machine for 30 and burned 478 calories so it was an alright workout. Tomorrow is my rest day. It is also another day of the reunion, hopefully there will be something there I can eat.. Have a good evening.

Hi, David. I highly recommend Steve's workouts. He has a keen sense of how much is enough to push you, without pushing you into fatigue.I've made a lot of progress listening to his advice.

Today was going great from the morning till the afternoon. Today was my day off from the gym, but it was the final day of my wife's (Krysten) family reunion. The dinner was New York Steak and potato salad and the such. After eating that I am not feeling too well. Owell, not too much that I can do now about it. Tomorrow I can't wait to get back to the gym, I feel lazy not going today, but I have heard and read that it is good to have a day off during the week. Everyone have a great week!

It was an ok day today. The food intake was good, but a little off of schedule which kind of threw my body for a loop. I tried to work out too soon after I ate dinner and that was a mistake. I was unable to complete my cardio for the night unfortunately. Tomorrow is a new day to get back on track! Have a good night everyone..

Good Evening everyone,
I just got back from doing the elliptical for 30 minutes. I did the interval session and towards the end I was kicking my butt. I got my heart rate up to 165 while doing sprints and it felt good. I am going to have to do better on the food aspect. I am doing alright, but I know that I can do better. I am going to start using Fitday everyday so I can keep track of my food intake.

This weekend I am going to get a good scale and a body fat monitor. I am going to start keeping a good record of my measurements so I know when I am making progress. I just need to find out which ones are good :)

I don't have much more to say tonight, but I hope all is well with everyone and keep up the good work!

Yesterday wasn't a good day for working out. My wife had a get together last night and didn't get home till almost midnight. I didn't make it to the gym, but I went outside with my two boys and played soccer with them. Nothing compared to the workout I do at the gym, but at least it was something.

I am excited though, my wife just signed up for the "Team in Training" Marathon. Her cousin passed away from leukemia almost two years ago and she is doing this in his memory. I said that I will do the training with her, but I don't care to run the 26 miles. The marathon is in November up here in Seattle. I look forward to working out with her in the evenings now.

I think that tonight I am going to go on the elliptical for a hour to make up for yesterdays miss. Everyone have a great day!!

I see the "team in training" shirts in the park in chicago all the time - good for her for signing up for it... they work hard... :D

This weekend I am going to get a good scale and a body fat monitor. I am going to start keeping a good record of my measurements so I know when I am making progress. I just need to find out which ones are good

David, on the scale, I think the Tanitas are pretty good. However, only use them for weight. The body fat stuff on scales is crap. This is because they work through electrical impedence (sorry if I'm telling you something you already know), and scales send a small current through your legs. So, unless your legs are a good proxy for the rest of your body, they'll give you a reading that isn't even close to the real thing.

What I did was to get two kinds of monitors. One was a cheap set of plastic calipers from bodybuilding.com, for about $17. I then used the methodology on to get a fairly accurate reading.

Then I got a handheld Omron monitor (the kind you hold with your outstretched hands), and compared the readings. It turned out this was a good proxy for the caliper measurement, and much easier to use. It's also fairly consistent from day to day

This Saturday, I'm going to do the dunk tank, and I'll get a good idea of how accurate the Omron actually is.

Tom,
Thank you for the information. Hopefully this weekend will allow me to go out and get that stuff. Thank you for stopping by.

Good Evening,
I just got back from the gym from doing the Elliptical. I did it for 30 minutes and it felt great. I am going to start strength training next week and I am excited about it. I know that it is going to be good to add that to my training. I kept to my normal eating today except when I came home from work my wife had fresh baked cookies that I couldn't resist. Luckily I only had two. That is a lot better then I would have done just a couple of weeks ago.

Happy Friday to everyone ( well in 15 minutes)

David

Good Evening,
I just got back from the gym from doing more cardio. I can't wait till next week and I start weights. There was a good thing at the gym tonight, since I don't have a scale at home I decided to weight myself @ the gym tonight. I don't know how accurate weighing yourself @ night is, but I got on the scale and it said 202.6. So from a week and a half ago that is down 2 pounds. That was a pleasant surprise. I think tomorrow I am going to get a scale. I know it would be more accurate than weighing myself at night.

Today was a good day food wise. Lately my menu has been something like:

Breakfast: oatmeal with a piece of peanut butter toast, piece of fruit
Snack: half can of tuna and two wasa crackers
Lunch: Wheat Tortilla chicken, lettuce, mustard , piece of fruit
Snack: Other half of can of tuna and two crackers
Dinner: Salmon, Salad, vegetables

I know that can be improved upon, but it is good for now.

Have a good evening..

This weekend was kind of hard for sticking on the plan. My sister sells Roasted Corn on the Cob for a business and she needed some help for the weekend. So I spent Saturday and Sunday 9-9 selling Corn and Potatoes. There was all of the "fair" food that used to be a problem for me but I wasn't even tempted to eat it. Luckily the guys that were next to me had chicken so I was able to get him to grill it for me without anything on it to eat. Then I went to the Thai place and got some Vegetables to go with the Chicken. I was too exhausted to go to the gym on Saturday night by the time that I got home. I am used to being on the computer all day, I don't know about this physical labor :) I am going to go back to the gym tonight and get back on track. Tonight I am going to start including weight lifting into my routine..

Have a great day everyone!

David
