Cycling Buddies, miles to go for a better you!

The weather here has sucked lately. Between that and my wife's surgery it has been tough to get out. I managed 12.5mi. each on Friday and Saturday morning though.

Hey reluctantcabbie (I keep wanting to type 'reluctantbuddy' and I don't know why), thanks for starting the discussion. Everybody's got some good advice and you've all made a lot of progress.

If anyone here is heavier and looking for a sturdy bike, though, you can check out. Its founder, Joan Denizot, started the company when she had difficulty finding bikes that supported more than 225 pounds.

She thought it would be a good idea to make bikes built for their riders, without having to go into stores and feel intimidated out of buying a bike because of their size.

So check out her site--she has a store for her bikes and gear and all, and you can get more information about being a new, plus-sized biker.

Thanks for the thread and discussion, and keep up the good work!

You have made one post since joining this site, and it was shameless advertising of a product that you obviously have a connection to.

There may honestly be a call for products like this out there, but I'm not happy about the way in which you chose to advertise it. Thanks but no thanks.

For the record, I am well over 300 lbs, and have had no issues with a comercially available Cannondale bicycle. It is a very light weigth road bike with multiple speeds. I would have a tough time paying $600 dollars for a single speed beach cruiser.

I'm pretty proud of myself. Yesterday I biked out to the lake for a total roundtrip of 18 miles. I thought I'd be sore, but I'm not :)

Very nice YMCA chick, you done good! eighteen miles is nothing to sneeze at. The fact that you are not sore is also a good sign. In my neck of the woods it has been raining non stop for days. I got a ride in between rainstorms on Saturday morning. Hopefully it will finally clear out this week and I will get some serious miles in myself.

The weather has been atrocious, and sorry, I just can't make myself ride in a downpour... which it has been since sunday. This is the first day the sun has come out in a while.
So, here is my update:

254.5 total since the end of May Guess I'm basically averaging about 50 miles a week, which I was hoping to do better on by now This week will probably not be any better, since I'll only get another chance to ride on Saturday, I'm not likely to do much more than 25 miles then. Maybe next week I can legitimately put in 4-5 days at 20 miles apiece? I'll try anyway.

Have not been in here to update in a while, I should have kept better track. Guess I got upset with the continued rain and my mood got foul. At any rate, life is better now and cycling is back in season!

Yup, another 43 miles will put me over 400 for the month, no problem, barring mechanical failure, this will happen by wednesday.

Of course mechanical failure is always an option... I blew a brand new tire today by running over something (had 40 miles on the damn thing!), so I went to install my secondary set of wheels, only to find the front one had no air in the tire. The sidewall weakend to the point where it gave up.

I'm running a back wheel from one set, and a front wheel from another set right now. No big deal, they just don't look the same. They work just fine though!

Ordered tires to replace all of the wheels.

Felt tired today. Only got 19 miles in. Got short sleep and the humidity and heat was getting to me a bit. Quads were feeling a bit strained.

I have 398 miles in for July - 2 miles short. I hope I'll get more sleep tomorrow and be able to do 25.

Did 23 miles today. I'm at 421 for the month of July, with one more day to go. This is what summer is supposed to be like! I'm also at 103 miles for this week. I expect to be over 120 miles, but not likely to break 130.

I hope you don't mind if I join. I'm an avid cyclist myself and I've kept a personal log of all the miles that I've biked for over a year now (I'll post August's totals when I get home). From the looks of your August totals, we ride similar distances. I started cycling in March/April '08 and I ended last year with 2,600 miles. My goal for this year is to ride over 3,000 miles.

Okay, here are my miles for August.

8/27/09 - 34 miles
8/28/09 - 18 miles
8/31/09 - 18 miles

Total miles in August: 535 miles

Most of my miles are from commuting to and from work, but I usually ride extra miles on the way home. I pretty much ride every weekday (except when I'm being extremely lazy). I occasionally ride on Saturdays, but I usually take Sundays off. I'm currently 595 miles away from reaching my goal of cycling 3,000 miles for the year.

I added a secondary category for spinning bike mileage on my posts. Come winter this will be How I log my spinning/mag trainer miles.

Question

My question -

I can't get my heart rate up when I ride my bike. The max I can get my heart up to is 130. Any Ideas?

Chip

Pedal faster? :biggrinjester:

No seriously? I wish that was my problem. I usually run out of pulmonary ability before I run out of strength. If you have the opposite problem where your pulmonary ability is running stronger than your pedaling cadence and road speed, then damn, dude, push for more speed or hit more hills! It would seem you have some natural talent/ability.

I'm an asthmatic former smoker. My legs tell me I can go faster, but my lungs can only handle so much and my heart rate rises to run the limited amount of O2 that my body can intake out to the working muscles. It is not uncommon for me to push myself out to 160 bpm when I'm doing hills or trying to sprint.

That being said, 130 bpm does not sound like a bad place to be. since I don't know how old you are, I can't figure an exact target HR, but in my case, here is the formula;
220 - 44 (age) = 176 bpm theoretical max. Training at a target H/R of 60% to 80% gives me a range of 0.60 x 176 = 105.6 (low range) to 0.80 x 176 = 140.8 (upper range).

An H/R of 130 would put me into a very good spot for cardio training. I regularly stay for long periods in the 140 and up range, but would get decent results from where you are too.
