Crockpot - My beans are still hard :(

I'm making kidney beans and sausage in my crockpot. This is the first time I'm making beans from a bag and not a can. I rinsed and soaked them overnight and started to cook them in the crockpot on high with the sausage this morning. This was like over 2 hours ago and they are still hard and there's still a fair bit of water in there  I have it on high so I thought it would be done by now. I'm about to go to work for a few hours but I'll be able to come back for my break. Should I leave the crockpot on high or low for the next 5 hours? How much longer till its done?

I wish I could help you out, but I don't know beans. . .about beans :p

When you've made other crockpot recipes, did your crockpot cook them faster or slower than the times specified in the recipes?

I really don't have experience with bagged beans, but from what I've been seen of other recipes online (chilis etc), they seem to call for 6-10 hours on low. Since you've already got two hours in, and another five to go, I'd let it on low and see what you come out with.

Hey Stingo,

Well I had to go to work so I left it to on high for another 5hours. That seemed to have done the trick. The beans softened but not as much water was soaked up as I thought  So I had to drain that out. They lost their red skin as well. Not sure why.

Taste good though!

Next time, you should pre-cook the beans in boiling water first, maybe not even fully cook, but at least halfway.

Bagged beans are VERY slow to cook! I usually do them in a pressure cooker, they cook in about 15 or 20 minutes. I would think several hours in a crockpot, since it's a much slower cooker. Better tasting than the canned stuff though, right??

Plus those canned beans remind me of canned peas...all mushy, no snap to them. And the flavor is a world of difference!!
