Welcome NX6 .. .the program works around you, so if you customise it to suit you which makes it much more doable. My advice is to plan, plan and then plan some more, because it seems when you're not prepared is when deviations sneak in.

Thanks for the advice :D Your right....it's all about planning. Im lazy and always sleeping due to the crazee  hours I put in at work...but from now on I will plan everything I do...and stick to it. Thanks once again :)

Welcome NX6 :)

As for your recent question in regards to shift hours i know how you feel:cool:

i work in a bar and on wednesday, friday and saturday nights ill work from 930pm until 430 in the morning and wont get to bed until 5am.

What i usually do to combat this is plan ahead!!
for example...on wednesday nights i know i wont get to bed till 5 am(thursday) so i set my alarm for 10.00am(thusday morning) so i at least get 5 hours sleep.
i get up at 10:00..have brekky (yoghurt) then if im tired ill just go back for a few more hours sleep!
this means ill have my three meals at 10.00,3.15 and 8.30 which gives me bedtime of around 11 or after (which is normal bedtime for me anyway)

hope that didnt confuse you much!!but basically all im saying is to plan plan plan! an unorganised cohenite always spells trouble!! :)

Happy Losing xx

Gallstones

Hi Wildskyz: Six months ago after tests and not feeling very well and in lots of pain, I was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis from a gall stone blocking the duct from the gallbladder to the pancreas. I never knew I had gallstones either and an ultrasound showed I had lots of gallstones. I was hospitalised for treatment and then had my gallbladder removed by keyhole surgery. On reflection I was feeling 'off' for about six weeks before but put it down to having a stomach virus. :(

I hope your tests come through ok and you can go to Europe with your mind at ease to enjoy your holiday. :)

Lessfatty: I have read that olive oil with lemon juice can help but also can be very dangerous in that it can encourage the stones to move resulting in stones getting caught in the ducts. This may then need surgery.

Hope everyone has a good Cohen friendly day tomorrow.

Just a quick question..... is silver side classified as lean beef that we're allowed?

If so, how does everyone cook it?

Hi

No

What I call Silverside is pickled meat and it is cooked by boiling.

It is pickled in vinegar or brine and spices. It is very yummy boiled with water, more vinegar, onions, bayleaves and other spices.

Not very program friendly!

Just stick with plain, raw meat and if you want to pickle it do so yourself.

Plain Silverside can be bought for roasting - it is very lean and inclined to be rather dry.

When I was on the program Mike thought he was doing me a favour, buying prime eye fillet!

I wanted a bit more flavour so used to buy Budget Rump from Bi-Lo. This had a lot more oomph - even a bit gamey - and at least I could taste the meat.

Although I cooked meals in many different ways, my favourite was a simple beef hot-pot casserole which I would prepare when I was preparing lunch, put the casserole in the oven and turn it off when cooked. Then, I wasn't preparing my dinner as a separate meal - dinner was cooked and only needed 60 seconds in the microwave to be ready.

I always added water up to the level of the meat - this gave me soup and the casserole (I didn't cut up the meat or brown it - so I had to use a knife and fork to eat it). A simple two course meal from the same pot!

Cheers

Kristine.

How do you make the beef casserole?

Hi All,
I'm yet another Newbie starting today..am very excited to actually be doing something positive about my weight!
After having a baby 5 months ago the extra weight I gained just didn't want to budge, so before it gets out of control I feel pleased to say I am actually doing something about it!
I have followed this forum so closely the past week as I waited for my program, you are all incredibly inspiring and I thankyou for that!

Survived the weekend away

Hi all :)

Just letting you know how i went on my weekend away.
I took all my crisbreads, fruit and water with me as recommended by some of the lovely people on this forum (and gum of course).

Had my Cohen's brekkie, went shopping then it was lunch time:confused:
I finally settled on a eatery called "Healthy Habits" where you can make up your own meals so I had chicken, lettuce, cuccumber and tomato with balsamic vinegar and ate my cb allowance with it and water of course - did not eat all of the meal as it was too much so did a quick calc on portions.

So far so good had my apple and cb for pm break and green tea.:p

Now dinner was another story  we went to the movies saw the "Holiday" by the way it was okay but not great a bit long. The movie finished about 9pm and most of the restaurants were closed, ended up going to a chinese rest so I ordered satay sticks without the sauce of course which came on a bed of lettuce. But I was still hungry so took a little fried rice and chicken from the other meal:( so that was my deviation )

I also feel quiet yucky!:( after having this small deviation. My stomach swoll up the next day and i am still not feeling that crash hot today either) it just goes to show you that to deviate is not worth it.

So am back on track 100% since Sunday;) and I know this sounds silly but I woud prefer to stay at home and have control then to go out again until I have finished the programme. i know I shouldn't put my life on hold some of you may be thinking but I would rather do this for a short period then gaining all the weight back and getting back into bad eating habits again.

Some will say life to short to be on a diet - well I believe life is to short not to take charge of your life and do what you want and if you want to be slim, trim & healthy well so be it.

Sorry if I went on a bit.

Sam:)

hi there all
I also went away this weekend and although I didn't officially start Cohens until today I had already dropped 2.5kg last week by following the preperation for Cohens.
My hubby was brilliant and made sure I wasn;t tempted. My only deviation was milk in coffes or cappacino's and when I weighed this morning I had only put on 0.3kgs.
I was partly tempted but this is only for a short time.
I agree nan68 I would rather be home and in control too.

Well done on your nearly perfect outing!
One alternative suggestion that I have found for Chinese restaurants is stir fry prawns with vegetables - generally it has a fairly bland sauce, which probably does have flour in it. Sometimes they also have a thai beef salad, or something like that. But the stir fry prawns is usually the closest to the plan.

Hi again

Thanks HL I did look at the prawns and was tempted but still wasn't sure and also they were a bit pricey, but will remember this for next time.
Hello katydidnext goodluck with programme - you'll do fine if you follow the plan. All the best Sam:)

Does anyone have dreams of deviating even though you are not in real life? I used to have dreams of smoking after I gave up too. Then I wake up panicking until I realise it was only a dream.

Survived the weekend away

Nans68

Great to hear you survived the weekend. Its always a relief when that happens.
When I first started the program (12 days after) I went away for 5 days on a golfing weekend. I decided before I went that I was going to take my food with me. I pre-cooked all my meals except 2 because we were going out those 2 nights. I didn't have access to a mocrowave as we were staying in a motel. It was a good test for me as I travel a lot with work and I found really great meals that taste just as yummy cold as they do hot.
Whenever I go away now I do the same thing. It can be a bit of a pain to pre-cook but once it is done it is so much easier while you are away because you then don't have to worry about what you are going to eat.
Anyway it is good if you can do it and I know that some people can't. You just have to try and find alternatives (and there are some out there).
I am going to Fiji for a week in Feb and it will be nearly impossible not to deviate a bit while there as I can't take my food with me. But I am resolved to the fact and plan to have a great time and not let it worry me.
All the best everyone.

20kgs and counting...

Well today has been a monumental day for me. My first short term goal was getting into the 80's and my next one was a 20kg loss. I confess to being a serial weigher but I try to limit to once a week but i had to jump on today knowing that is the best time of the month for a loss and i couldn't believe my eyes.

I also lost about three kilos in the week before I started Cohen's doing the basics while waiting for my program and I like to include this in my loss as it helps keep me motivated. So i've changed my ticker start weight to before ordering Cohen's rather than when i actually started my program. That's also when I took my ghastly before photo.

So to celebrate, I've changed my avatar to a current photo! (small steps). My friends and family are really starting to notice the difference and I feel so much more confident when I go out in public. I've also got a part time job which i'll be starting in February and i'll have to order a uniform which will be a little daunting.

It feels like it was just yesterday that I started the program and was wondering whether it was just going to be another let down but it's all happening for me and I want to assure the newbies that being disciplined and sticking with it really will pay off. I'm in week eight and still losing a couple of kgs per week. I'm way past the point where I would plateau with other diets.

Stay with it, it's really worth it!

Thanks ATA yes you are right about planning I did everything by the book I also backed all my meals for the Sunday so I wouldn't have an excuse to deviate. You must be very organised especially with your work you definitely need the mind set. Have a wonderful trip to Fiji and I am sure you will not succumb to too many deviations.
BrightyellowCongratulations it's great when people notice my sister did recently and she has started eating healthy because of me.
And also feel more confident I used to try and not bring attention to myself because I didn't feel worthy because of my weight which is hard with 2 hyper boys, but since losing the weight I have so far, I feel really good again and also attractive. ATB Sam:)

Thanks Sam. It's funny that you mention about other people being inspired. Since I first started a few people i know have made positive changes to their eating habits. It's great to feel inspirational.

About the confidence thing, I was always a little paranoid that people were judging me because of my weight but I don't have any of those fears anymore. It's fantastic. Another thing I noticed is that I don't feel guilty about eating anymore. Which probably tells me that I was judging myself every time i put food in my mouth.

Yippee!! I'm overweight!

I hopped on the scales today, and have lost 2 kg since Sunday! (no wonder I've been hungry!)

That takes my BMI well and truly under 29.9, which means I am no longer obese!!!!!!

Yippee...... I now fall into the overweight category, and in another 10 or so kilos, I will be in my healthy BMI weight range, but still a way to go to get to my Cohens healthy weight range.

In regard to gallstones/gallbladder there was a thread a while ago in regard to this issue http://weight-loss.fitness.com/cohens-lifestyle/6741-gall-bladder-removal.html?highlight=gall#post142413 It is not actually Cohen foods that causes gallstones, just rapid weight loss diets.

In regard to weight fluctuations may I ask if you have been "deviating" ? Particularly with starches, sugars, salt (salty foods), even little bits cause swings in daily weights or at least for me.

I had olive oil mixed with lemon juice to help when I had a gallbladder attack, the DR put me on tablets that help reduce the thickness (dilute) of the liquid gall. Worked well.

NO to the deviation. No starches, sugars or salty foods. I didnt eat all of my meals on the odd occassion as I was feeling unwell, but otherwise, no. Ate only what is on my allowance.

How bizzare, that I should open my big trap just the week before and brag at how I have been losing 2kgs every week whilst on this program and low and behold, its only been 600gms this past wk. Go figure.

By the way, my pancreas was not inflamed according to blood test results. Reading was a little high, but otherwise ok. My liver is up the creek, but has been the past 12mths. Waiting for more blood work results for that one. I do appear to have a tummy bug tho, that wont shift.

Lessfatty, I did realise that the food on Cohens doesnt cause the problems with gallstones. Definitely the fast weight loss will contribute to a great deal of what goes on with our bodies. And 28kgs in 14wks is a lot of weight to have lost. I am feeling it in different ways. My Dr told me on Sunday that its too fast and I will only gain it all back at the same pace and Im being foolish and irresponsible. Granted, she is thinking Im on some random diet as she has never heard of Cohens. But its people like her, that make us strivers for normal weight, to question ourselves and to put down our efforts. Nonetheless, I will not allow her to throw a spanner in the works. When you think about it, it really isnt all that much weight when you consider what some of the weight lost by the people on the Cohens website. Thats a shitload to have lost in such short amounts of time.

Hope everyone is doing well and feeling lighter.

Cheers,

Regina

HEAVENLYLAMB - CONGRATS on being overweight... fantastic achievement. VERY inspiring. You must be feeling so fantastic about now. I see the tickers and know that I can do it too, because you've done it.

BRIGHTYELLOW - WOW you are moving along so well and doing amazingly. Good on you. VERY inspiring.

DREAMER - Keep up the great work. I've never been a coffee drinker (allergic to it!) however before Cohens I was an avid V energy drink drinker. About six weeks into COhens and I had a horrid night followed by all day ballet rehearsals with miss 4 and I really did need something to sustain me. So I reverted to old 'tricks' and had a can of V. I had the most awful headache for two days! So my advice on the headaches is to go cold turkey on the coffee and drink H20 like there's no tomorrow. Good luck xxoo

Going well here. Can't beleive how fast the weight is falling off this time around. I'll doticker up date every four weeks, but I tink I'll be under the 100 mark by February yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy taking one meal at a time, one day at a time, one kilo at a time!

Keep up the great work everyone. This time next year we won't recognise each other! xxoo

By the way, my pancreas was not inflamed according to blood test results. Reading was a little high, but otherwise ok. My liver is up the creek, but has been the past 12mths. Waiting for more blood work results for that one. I do appear to have a tummy bug tho, that wont shift.

I had the exact same thing "inflamed pancreas", for 39 years I never noticed it existed, but in one week I really felt how much pain it can cause if it was unhappy and blocked up.

However I got some medication "Ureaso" which I have been taking every day and since then no reoccurance, except for the occasional twinge.

My loss on average has been 1.5KG/week and I am quite big so I hope my more "moderate" loss (its still great) means that my Gallstones are not growing much.

Your Dr is absolutely right; we all will gain back our weight at the end of Cohen! However that statement is based on the one assumption "if we return to our old eating habits". If we eat what we ate before! If we return to doing the same things that made us fat before, we will get fat again. I believe we all must see the diet as the start, the begining of a new way of life and new way of eating right, that is why it is called the Cohen Lifestyle Program. Getting the our goal weight, finishing refeed is not the end, it is the "end of the begining" a new begining. Chelsea has kept her weight off, but she has adjusted her old eating habits, still some "naughty" stuff but its only an occasional treat. I hope Chelsea has some comments for us.

The reason for "rapid weight" loss being normally equated with "gain it all back at the end" is that rapid weight loss programs normally are completely unstainable. The extreme is if we starved ourselves (the all you can eat water and tea diet) until thin. If we starved ourselves, then we will get thin quick, but at the end if we return to old eating ways the weight will return.

Slow gradual weight loss probably means the person has changed what they eat and the way they eat and new habits and changes have been adopted. However I think Cohen diet can do both, rapid weight loss, followed by a readjustment phase (refeed), followed by real changes to how we eat, our bodies will take months to heal/adjust to being thin, just like ex-smokers take months to see to full benefits of quitting.

For me I know if I return to the 3 starchy (even if healthy) meals a day, I will be back at 123KG 1-Jan-2008 unhealthy and miserable. The daily mistake of eating to much rice, bread, pasta and potatos made me fat, not the occasional once a week chocolate or take-away. I am looking forward to eating the stuff I have missed but I look forward to eating it as an occasional treat.

In regard to swings, I just havent experience significant swings whilst eating 100% Cohen diet, salt (salty soups) in particular give me a temporary increase in weight due to water retention. Maybe it is because of the inflamed pancreas
