Changing the way i feel

thanks for being here
the spaggetti had on the box 100gr = 350 cal

my serving was about 200gr (2x350=700)
a tomatoe 30cal+ a spoon of olive oil 50 cal=80
50 grams cheese when i googled it was 200cal
total 980
but i dont know if it was 200 OR 250 gr of spagetti. If it was 50 gr more thats 125 calories to add
1105////

I put on my scales 100 gr of spagetti and really it was so little.Or my scale is not good.It was tiny, i mean a bird would eat more.So then i used the plate i ate from put the leftover pasta in , kinda what i had eaten and then weighed it it was 200gr....

I never calorie counted.i just know the bads (all takeaways, pizza chocolates souvlaki ect) and goods yogurt salads fruit. It was simple as that.

So i guess there no way out of this...i m so scared that when i loose weight ill gain it all back cause i just cant go all my life counting....
I was thinking maybe i could calculate calories in the food i eat the most
like spinach and rice . fresh beans in the pot with potatoes.chicken in the oven ,ect...maybe if i sum up thre calories in each meal and stick it on the fridge ....??that way i dont have to count as you guys told me.So maybe that way i ll know that if today i have the spagetti ill only had a low fat yoghurt for diner or if its something low cal ill know that ill have a little bit of chesse as well....I was really suprised....i mean REALLY S|UPRISED.........

200 gr is a LOT.
You really have to reduce it.
Not only for calorie counting.
For your energy.
You will ALWAYS be tired and sleepy after lunch if you eat 200 gr of spaghetti. Trust me.

Average serve is 80/100 gr ;)
If you are still hungry, add some raw veggies ;)

Jasper, you do know that you're supposed to weigh pasta from dry, not wet, right? Wet weighs a lot more than dried.

Here are some pictures of what weights are supposed to look like, using the wholewheat penne pasta I have in my cupboard. To give you an idea, my plate is 28cm across.

The first one is 50g, which is what I usually have. Yes, it's small, but I supplement it with lots and lots of low calorie vegetables (like steamed zucchini, which is very very low calorie). The second one is 75g, which is the recommended serving size in the UK. The third one is 100g. The fourth one is 200g. (sorry the pictures aren't quite consistent in size, but you should be able to see roughly what I mean given the only thing that changes in each of them is the amount of pasta)

I don't think I'm a bird, let alone a baby bird. I have a big appetite! Maybe it's a question of making the focus of the meal less pasta and more something else.

And what about some alternatives? None of these are over 400 calories/ serve. I've looked for vegetarian pasta ideas.

These are from my favourite recipe website (from Australia).

(4.2 kilojoules to a calorie, so this is roughly 380 calories/ serve)
(about 340 calories/ serve)
(About 333 calories/ serve)
(about 219 calories/ serve)

From BBC Good Food:

Hope this gives you some inspiration :)

No i dint know that i must weigh pasta dry.....
I took a look at the recipies and they all look so tasty!i will sure make them , they are also very easy.
I so embaresed for saying this , actually you ll think that im a big fat pig...but i just cant image what it will be like eating 50-75 gr of pasta.I am defenitly going to try doing so , instead of just NOT eating it at all (my favourite food)
I freaked out really bad.I feel im starting my diet all over again....

Thank you so very much for everything, you do give me strengh to carry on.

Morning Coffee (100 cal.)
Lunch Spagetti with tomatoe (1200 cal)
Snack Small coffee (40 cal)
Dinner Soup ready made (125 cal)

TOTAL 1465 calories

Work out 40 min.on bike --(500 cal.)

Amy thanks once again for those photos, helped so much.!

No problem :) According to my packet of pasta, the pasta I use doubles in weight when cooked (so 100g dried weighs 200g)- so you probably had 100-125g. That's still a lot, but it's not the end of the world.

I don't think you're a pig. I think you're learning. We all have to do it. I'm absolutely not judging you here, I'm trying to help. I think I used to eat a similarly large amount of pasta before I started weighing it. But I decided I had to cut back, and I got used to a smaller amount.

I don't advocate anyone dropping food out of their diet if it's their favourite- that's not something you can sustain. But if you reduce the amount you eat then you can enjoy it guilt free. That's what I do with chocolate- I have a very very small amount, calorie controlled, and I really enjoy it. Try 100g, see how you go with that, and aim to reduce to 75. Replace some of the pasta with other, lower calorie things (lentils are very filling, for example, and mine are 85 calories for 100g; or steamed vegetables. Or lettuce like ItalianGirl, although personally I find that a little insubstantial). I'd also try to reduce the amount of cheese as well, that's very high calorie. But again, replace it with something else with a good powerful flavour kick to replace it- like garlic (if you like it).

Maybe you should try couscous in place of pasta? Its very filling.

And as a [last resort maybe you should just take this a little slower. You could decide that this week you will have x amount of calories a day. Then next week lower it so that by the end of the month your stomach has shrunk a little to accommodate eating the amount of calories it will take to lose weight. BUT you'd really have to stick to it.

Also, if you can try buying pre-portioned packages so the adding and figuring of numbers is just looking on the box.

I think sometimes when we try to do things we get really frustrated with we need to remind ourselves for our original intentions of making a change. Make a list. Post it everywhere. And don't forget to drink LOTS OF WATER!!!!!

Hello again.
Well yesterday was a very bad day for me as you know.Calories where on my mind all night i was watching tv and my mind was traveling in calorie land.
So im trying not to obsess about this.
Im very tired from all the house work yesterday. My 2 year old son is driving me up the wall. He's so messy.I keep cleaning up after him.I found an army of ants yeasterday passing through my living room , cause he had eaten a piece of Toast and little pieces he left on the floor.....
I m going to get ready for my workout , but not feeling very energetic i must do this though , i said to myself this week is a 6 day workout.
still not having a good relationship with the scales.I said im not going to get on evey day, but every day i cant resist. So im still 91,2....
I must break through the ninties......

im going to Extra try hard!!!

Does anybody know how many cals in 1 cup of boiled white rice?
Im googling it in greek and i get 90-100 cals
I google it in english and get 200 cals...
Im aking lunch and dont want to shocked again!

I have basmati rice and camera. Be right back.

i love basmati but its finished. The one i have says Blue rose....???...I m going to have a cuo of that when boiled, but cause im making for my husband and child i can count before boiling....

According to my packet of rice, the recommended serving size is 75g, which is 195g when cooked, so it a little more than triples in weight once cooked. My rice is 355 calories/ 100g (dried weight). Don't products in Greece have nutritional information on the side (something like the third photo)? That's where you'll find out exactly what you need to know about calorie content (especially if you weigh things). My product could be entirely different from yours. (It might also measure in kilojoules, which is the metric version of calories)

The first two photos are what I would have (50g) and the UK recommended serving size (75g) in a 500ml/ 1 pint Pyrex measuring cup (to my understanding, there's 250ml to a cup wet or dry measure). This is dry, so they get a lot bigger when cooked (but I don't want to cook it for you to show you, I put it all back in the container!)

PS- don't worry about that sports supplier question, I think it was a spam bot. Just pretend it's not there.

In future, I would weigh before cooking- if you try to work it out afterwards you won't get the right numbers and you might have more horrible surprises like yesterday.

331 cal in 100gr.Doesnt say cooked or dry i guess dry
180gr of boiled rice is about 70 gr dry right?
so doing the math is that 180 gr of cooked rice is 230 calories right?

wow thanks amy for those pics and info ...i did it right thanks to your advice!
I cant weigh before cooking cause im making for us all.if i did so that would mean double pots out in the kitchen and having the whole stove turned on!!!

Breakfast Coffee 100cals
lunch Rice (70gr!!!:) )with steamed zucchinis and a cut up onion with tomatoe (NO OLIVE OIL ADDED!!!!) 350 cals

will update till night with the rest !!!

Could you do something like weigh the whole lot, then work out what proportion of it you want? Say if you're cooking for yourself and your husband, put in 150g dried (weigh then) then give yourself about a third? I think it's more precise than weighing at the end.

Well done with the lunch :)

I am so glad to have looked into your diary and see you keeping a positive attitude today! Keep it up girl! And Amy has some great advice that seems to be working for you. Rock'n!
