Our air is usually so crisp & clean too LaMa. When we were going to bed last night G said "Oh my god. Come look at this!" After he had turned off the lights in our living room you could see the horizon was bright red towards Cradle Mountain. It is a 2000 hectare fire apparently & no-one has been evacuated yet. We went to bed feeling very apprehensive & this morning I am staying inside. Some smoke has seeped in, but only a little. One of the very high windows in our bedroom must have a gap as some woodsmoke seeps in during Winter as well occasionally. We have tried finding out where but have not been able to.
I will dig out a dvd I have today from the fire service & watch it again. When everything settles down & all the fires are out I'm going to ring our local fire brigade & ask about joining a fire "ladder" which is a network of people in our area to have an escape plan in the event of fire. We need to clear a track down the back of our block & then we would have an escape route to another block & then another road & so would another community who lives on that road, but it would be best to do it as part of a proper plan involving the fire brigade.
Thanks Stacy. I will stay safe & inside & try to get local radio, which is difficult. I'll keep looking online. We have cleared much of the bush from our house & the sheep keep the grass down. We need a pump with it's own generator though as once the power goes out we have no means of pumping water. I'll check that out soon. I would want to fill up all the spouting & block the downpipes before abandoning our house. I used to have a bag of tennis balls for that-maybe they're in the shed still....
It feels fairly safe here, but I must be better prepared for the future. We both feel that this place is a part of us. We had it built & it is unique & impossible to replicate. It has a lifetime of mementos from both families & the thought of losing it is horrendous. Other than our dog I can't imagine what I would take with us, other than my handbag & phone. It would not be photos.
Enough of that. I won't bother deleting most of the above.
Love to all, xoxo Cate
