It is about the lat and bicep strength (not to mention helper muscles that balance you) not the grip strength. Of course, it looks a lot COo.oOLer if you just throw your hand up there and do one!
Recently, I have been working extremely hard on my pinch grip... I want to be able to do a pull-up using the floor joists above my head in the basement. I always thought... "How bad-assed would that be to just reach up to someone's rafters and yank out a couple of pull-ups.
Since I weigh ~170, I would need to be able to pinch grip ~90 with each hand (at a minimum). The upside is that my pinch grip tool is metal and very slippery... The wood on floor joists is extremely pourous and easier to get a grip on. Once I can do some of these puppies, I will post a picture!
How about leg raises hanging only by your fingertips on the joists??!!
