Can Anyone Out There Do A One Handed Pullup!?!?!?

I've always been curious....I can't even begin to imagine doing a true one handed pullup....I can hold on to the bar with one hand and hold that forearm with the other hand(if that makes any sense to anyone) and do like 4 or 5 but I cant just dangle there with one arm and do a pullup....is it possible?....or am I just not strong enough? ...can anyone here actually do one?

I've seen them done :) My arm strength isn't that far along that it can support my body weight.

I can do them with each hand. It ain't easy and hurts like Hell if you do it wrong. An easy way to work up to them is as follows:

Do pull-ups with a loop of webbing attached to the pull-up bar.
Start with the webbing loop very small (about 4 inches or so).
Use one hand on the bar and one hand on the loop.
As you get good, lengthen the loop.
Once you can do them with the loop around 15 inches, try without the loop hand.

BTW - DO NOT drop yourself to a fully extended arm after completing one! This will over extend (hyperextend) your elbow and will hurt like the dickens for weeks!!!

:)

Another good way to work up to them is to do a standard pull-up and then remove one hand and keep yourself "locked" up there with one hand. DO NOT drop fast (read note above)... Eventually, you will be able to do a one-handed negative pull-up. This tells you that you are well on the way to a one-handed pull-up.

if you do it with a wrist strap does that count?? lol
Absolutely!

It is about the lat and bicep strength (not to mention helper muscles that balance you) not the grip strength. Of course, it looks a lot COo.oOLer if you just throw your hand up there and do one!

Recently, I have been working extremely hard on my pinch grip... I want to be able to do a pull-up using the floor joists above my head in the basement. I always thought... "How bad-assed would that be to just reach up to someone's rafters and yank out a couple of pull-ups.

Since I weigh ~170, I would need to be able to pinch grip ~90 with each hand (at a minimum). The upside is that my pinch grip tool is metal and very slippery... The wood on floor joists is extremely pourous and easier to get a grip on. Once I can do some of these puppies, I will post a picture!

How about leg raises hanging only by your fingertips on the joists??!!

I love freaky stuff like that!

wow, that'd definatly be awsesome. what do you use to increase your grip? like what kind of tool (pic?) ? i usually just hold 2 25lb plates in each hand for as long as i can.. but i never knew there was an actual exercise! lemme know if you don't mind! thanx rip!

I believe those neon powerballs are really good for grip and lower arm exercising. They work using a gyroscope which is extremely powerful and when you get it spinning using your wrist (max is about 15,000 rpm) it transfers the force into your wrist and arm....i got one last week and it's very cool, good to just mess around with as well.

Hey Mreik....its hard to set up but if you want the ULTIMATE grip workout try climbing rope without notches and without your legs....I got one a couple of months ago and tied it to the highet branch I could find and when I started I could only pull myself up a couple feet without my legs....now I can go up and down it like 2 or 3 times in a row without usin anything but my hands...and Ive noticed a huge difference in grip and in arm strength...If you have the rescources its definetly worth it....

i've been lookin for a rope thick enough, i was gonna do it more for lat strength, but now that you mention it, it'd be a great grip workout.. hmm, maybe now i'll dish out the 2$/ft for the thick rope. BTW, i want thick so it replicates most pull up bars..(incase anyone is wondering)

The thicker the better for grip strength. Another thing you can do is toss a towel (or something) over a pull up bar so it dropps on both sides, grab the ends and do pull ups with it - also good for grip strength.

You could also swing a hammer for 35+ years, worked for my Dad - hell of a grip on that guy.

Here is my pinch grip worker... It attaches to weights using a carabiner connected to a loading pin.

And, here is my homemade climbing wall (I have a whole climbing gym cave complete with 12 inch thick pads for falls).

Notice the fingerboard hanging up there also. I use this to do 2 fingered pull-ups. Nasty workout baby!

All of these tools are used to enhance my grip for rock climbing.
