Camy's diary

Yey, I lost a pound!! Woohoo!!! Finally I could update my ticker!! Since arrival I have lost about 2 kg I think (I weigh about 62 kg now and weighed 64 when we first arrived), which is great considering we have only been here 4 weeks, so I am losing at a rate of about a pound per week, that is excellent! Ideally I will be able to lose a tad quicker in the next 6 weeks, as I would like to be 8 pounds lighter by the end of them... but I think that once I have a job and I am active it will be easier to lose the pounds!
The weight loss is great when considering I am very inactive, except for swimming I tend to sit around all day, almost no activity at all!!!
Today I am going to the closest hospital to follow up my application. I am nervous, I would really really love working there, it is a big maternal child health unit and is only 15 minutes by foot from our house, it would be beyond ideal. So probably it won't work out...

Anyhow, other than that I am hoping that our money has arrived today, because then we can go shopping soon and then I can buy myself some scales!! And also I can buy some pots and pans and other utensils, which will make my kitchen a nicer place.

Food of the day:
Breakfast: 1/2 pineapple, 2 mini bananas, 1 hard boiled egg
Lunch: 1/3 of a fried plantain, 1 chicken drumstick (grilled), 1 cup of rice, bean stew (there goes my attempt at eating lightly for lunch in order to be able to swim lighter, hahaha
Dinner: green salad, 1/2 papaya

Exercise:
walk about 1 hour
swim about 1 hour

Update:
I got the job! Woohoo, I can't believe it, but i did it. I will be rotating the hospital, as I am fresh out of med school the head obstetric doc thinks that will be better for me, so I am starting with a NICU placement for 3 months and then move on to labour ward, then surgery. I am beyond happy, I mean I still can't believe it. I am starting tomorrow!!!

I am so happy, this motivates me even more, hopefully the job will keep me on my feet all day long and I will be able to just lose the weight. Plus I will walk there and back and that is already like a mile and a half.

Hi Camy, I have yet to read your 30 pages of the diary, but will definitely pick up from here!

Congrats on the job, that's awesome! A little extra motivation can do wonders! :)

I started working, so I now have to stand and take care and observe preemie babies all morning long, I will be working 6 hour shifts for now and then possibly going into 12 hour nightly shifts in about a months time.
Since I only work 8 to 2, I may actually take a second job helping street children in a local shelter from 3 to 6 in the afternoon, that way I am not home all day. I will talk about it with a girl who works there tonight.

Food of the day:
breakfast: 1/2 papaya, 1/2 pineapple
Lunch: 1 cup of white rice (this time I did it right), 2/3 tin of mackarel, 1 hard boiled egg
Dinner: bowl full of lentils and 2 small sausages

Exercise:
No swimmingas it was raining hard, some walking instead once it had stopped

I may have to go for a heavier breakfast, because by like 11 I was starving this morning, maybe some carbs... I am going to look and see if I can get some gluten free cereal or something along those lines and then just have a lighter lunch (just fruit for lunch for example). I will continue going swimming every day, as it won't be a problem to manage that with my timetable.

Thank you Anke, I am enjoying it very much, I really really like the job, the women I work with are nice too, although quite quiet. And when they talk they tend to do it in Twi, which sucks ever so slightly, but they are really friendly and seem genuinely happy that I am helping them, yey!

Thank you wishes for the compliment, it is me in the photo (and I won't even mention that it took a good 60 pictures and almost 30 hours in the sun to get 1 decent shot!).

Work was alright (although sadly the baby I took care of most yesterday died overnight), next week I am starting my secondary shelter job on the side, which is great, and will give me some more activity.
The stupid 8 to 2 schedule really works against my system, I am full until about 12 and then I am starving but only make it home by about 3ish. I would snack at 12, but we have nowhere to put any food (I would bring a piece of fruit or so, but if I leave it 4 hours in the heat it will get mushy), well I will find a solution eventually.

Food of today:
Breakfast: 1/2 pineapple, 1 hard boiled egg
Lunch: 1 bowl of old hard rice (yeah great choice I know), tomato and cucumber salad, 1/2 pineapple
Dinner: fridays we seem to end up always at that fastfood joint, oh well, I had chicken breast and half of the portion of rice (which is still a ton of rice!!!), I also had 2 soft drinks, but well... we were going out and it is hard, I had a bottle of water in between them though!

Exercise:
1 hour swimming

So yesterday I did something I hadn't done before: I swam 400 m in a row without ever pausing. I am really proud of myself. The first 400 m were tough, but the secodn set were much easier. In the end I swam 1 k, which I what I usually aim for. Today I may try 1.2 k (work my way up to 2 k slowly).
Next week I may up it a notch and do 20 minutes of cycling before I jump in the pool, get a little bit more of exercise in ad I don't have the time to walk for hours anymore. I really want to lose this weight and I only have 5 weeks to go so I either work harder or... I won't make my goal.

Today we had late breakfast (at around 11) so i think that will be brunch, I may have a snack in the afternoon and then dinner.
So:
Brunch: half a small pineapple (like 1/4 of my usual), 1/3 of a papaya, 1 small banana, 1 portion of plantain chips (not so good, as fried...)
Snack: 1 carrot and 1/2 cucumber
Dinner: I am hoping for steak and veggies, but we haven't got a lot of money right now, so we'll see!

Exercise:
1 hour of swimming (maybe gym?)

As do all models for any swimshoot do. only they get retouching afterwards as well!
Bugger about loosing that baby, that must be a hard part of the job im guessing.

How long does it take you to swim as far as you do? I got bored swimming, which is odd because i can cycle for much longer without being bored, although i have changing scenery rather than pool tiles to look at. And more often than not i have some tunes playing and i sing along or at least huffing and puffing up a hill in time with the music whilst struggling up a hill :)

wishes, it takes me about 45 minutes to swim 1 k, but I do pause for two 5 min breaks (or more, but then I need more time too) in the middle. Yeah it is boring, but it's alrighty, not as bad as it could be I guess, I enjoy not sweating as much or not feeling it at least and I can think quite well while I swim.
Yeah losing them is part of the job, so I am taking it as lightly as I can.

Today I did something incredible, something I could have never ever done a year ago and I am very very proud of myself: I hiked for almost 5 hours, up a mountain, back again and then back up and back down again (down one side then back down the side we started from). After about an hour I was near tears, I was about to break down and cry and tell them all that I just couldn't do it, it was so hot, I was covered in sweat, I had difficulty breathing, there was no end in sight... but I pulled myself together and did it!

Food of the day:
Breakfast: 1/2 pineapple
Lunch: 2 yam chips, 1 hardboiled egg
Snack: another hard boiled egg
Dinner: half a portion of fried rice, 2 yam chips
(I am aware that my food of today was crummy as hell, not healthy, not enough and just NOT GOOD!)

Exercise:
4 hours of difficult hiking + 1 hour of walking

Camy

grr i had a nice reply and then clicked something and lost it :/

Agreed swimming means less sweating, and hiking is excellent fun way to pass the day ... well it is until you are an hour or two into the walkin lol.

yeah, man I am not a good hiker and I don't mind when it is flat and fairly easy territory (I can even do hilly places) but this was a bitch of a hike. Only 10% of visitors go on that hike and approx. half go back halfway, which means that few really do the full thing.
It goes straight up (85% incline of something ridiculous like that), you have to clamber on with your hands more often than not, go underneat giant roots and over low branches, and dodge these mean looking spiders all the time! At least I now definitely know that I do not want to go on the Kilimanjaro trip the man is planning.
I'd rather go to a spa!

I wasn't feeling well this morning, yesterday's fried rice must have hit me in the stomach harder than I thought, but I am feeling fine now, so although I didn't got to work, I will go to the pool, and to my weekly weigh in. Last week I did it on tuesday, but I think Monday is a better day to do it.

Food of the day:
Breakfast: 1 apple, 2 tiny bananas
Lunch: lettuce and 2 tomatoes salad, small bowl of white rice
Dinner: half of a green salad, half of a potato salad, 1/4 of pineapple, 1 small banana

Exercise:
1 hour swimming

Update on the weigh in:
not so great, I only lost half a pound, but I know that I never consumed over 1500 cals last week and I exercised 5 days, so I think I may have some water retention because my period is due soonish. Hopefully once I get it the weight will go down noticeably.
In any case I think I may have cracked 62 kg and be 61.8, which is a small difference but so close to 59 in a way... I am 63.3 in the evening and dressed, I tend to take 1.5 kg off when I weigh in late and with clothes on.

hehe, I know the broke thing :)

ooo, my dad and bro have done Kilimanjaro... I want to... but also not too fond of prolonged periods of discomfort... with spiders...

Anyway, sounds like you're settling in alright, and the heat has only slightly started to sizzle your brain into "Africa time" (the reason it took so long for your job to get sorted, hehehe)

Well, I'm off to go COOK... in my own kitchen (how cool is that?? ...sorry, only been outta the nest a few months here :) )

Hey at least you have somebody who wants to do stuff with you. My other half just looks at me if i suggest walking to the dairy and goes "why walk? we can take the car!"

I upped a notch the weight loss and got dysentery... or typhoid... or maybe just a bad bout of food poisoning.
Yesterday I felt yucky in the morning but fine in the afternoon, even ate quite a lot, swam my k and was in good spirits. This morning at 3 I woke up with bad bad nausea, and then the runs started. I am gonna make it sweet and short, it is not midday yet and I have been 14 times!
Since I can't keep water down I am going to the doc after "lunch" to see if I need IV hydration. Maybe he could spike it with some antinausea med, because I have been crying on and off for the past hour, it is just so frustrating, there is nothing I can do and as an emetophobic I get myself into a hissyfit every time I have to throw up. I stop myself from crying too hard because I guess I have to try to save liquids wherever I can and just losing them via my eyes is probably not the smartest!

I really hope it is something that goes away in 12 hours, or that is curable with soem vial of magic medicine... but probably it is one of those things that just "get better with time". Yuck! And the lovely weightloss is not going to be sustainable either :(!

Food of the day:
Nothing!

Exercise:
toilet runs every 20 minutes

Camy

The docs weighed me and I only weighed 132 there, but then I am fairly dehydrated (not bad enough to get me an IV this time woohoo!), but it was really nice to see that... and I was dressed (jeans and 1 pound heavy shoes, plus T shirt)!!! I am obviously not counting this, but last time I went to a doc (in October) I was 141!

Now I just have to find a way in which I eat AND lose weight ;)!

I feel better already, the doc gave me some nausea meds, some diarrhoea meds, some hydrating solution (which tastes like crap) and although I have not taken all of them yet, I think I am on the mend. And the nausea med is drowsy! I am so looking forward to sleeping!!!

I am healed (I think), but I am resting today and eating bland diet. Tomorrow I go back to work and exercising and normal eating.

Before all hell broke lose in my bowels, I had decided on a new plan of action to tackle midmorning hunger. So I have decided to have some carbs in the morning, in order to feel fuller for longer. I looked at the cereal isle for a long time and unfortunately ALL kinds of cereal (from cornflakes to rice crispies) have gluten in them, as they all have barley malt in them. So I have bought myself gluten free baby cereal. It is rice and maize based and apparently vanilla flavoured (yum, I guess).
I will mix myself 30g of that with 150ml of soy milk every morning and eat that puddingy stuff along with my morning fruit. That will add 200 cals to my morning routine and give me some carbs to keep me going.
My lunch will be one hardboiled egg and some salad (since I am not fancying cooking at lunch time), no carbs, since I had my carbs in the morning, and dinner will as usually be a warm meal.
I hope this leaves me satisfied and less hungry, but more energetic!

Today's food (bland diet):
Breakfast: 1/2 boiled plantain
Lunch: 1/2 bowl of rice, 1/2 boiled plantain
Dinner: Soup with rice in it, 1 apple

No exercise (but I am going to clean the house a bit)

Camy

ouch that doesnt sound to shit hot (bawhah ok bad pun!)
Hope you feel better though seriously. nothing sucks more than being sick!!! :(

I am torn, we have 2 bedrooms, and we discussed (kind of) renting one out. Now a fried has said she needed a place and I said she could have a look at our bedroom if she wanted (she would pay a little rent).
Today she is going to come and I kind of feel like I don't want anyone living with us, I like it just being the two of us. How do I tell her? I mean the room is awesome, I am sure she'd like it, but then we have to live with someone for 3 or 4 months... blech, stupid me for offering!

Food of the day:
breakfast: half a pineapple
lunch: 3 tomatoes, 1 cucumber, 2 hardboiled eggs, half a can of tuna
Dinner: steak!!! maybe...

Exercise:
1 hour of swimming
