Evo, Why do you wear a kilt? I always thought it was cool and all. But never really wondered why.

Do all contestants in your trowing games wear them or are you just part Scottish?

Well, I have more Irish in me than Scottish, but I do carry some Scottish blood. We have our family tree backed pretty far up and in good keeping.

In order for you to compete in a Highland Game competition, you must wear a kilt and almost all of them require you to wear kilt hose (long socks so to speak). Every event that we do mimicks some sort of battle technique-whether it be the flipping of cabers which were used to cross moats or the tossing of sheafs which were originally set on fire and used to get to high places, etc etc etc it's all about tradition.

Now...if you show up to throw in one of those gawd awful utilikilts, you typically won't be allowed to participate. Kilts DO NOT have outside pockets.

I don't typically wear a kilt for everyday purposes.

If you're interested in purchasing a kilt that's not expensive, you can find them here or I can make them (yes, I sew too).

Interesting... do kilts apply only to the Scottish, or other Celtic nations as well?

There are other nations that have worn kilts or a fabric type concoction that is similar to a kilt. Also, even in Scotland, it depended on location as to whether you wore kilts or trousers. I love Braveheart, but in speaking with some historians, William Wallace wore trousers and not a kilt...but I suppose the movie would give up some of "Scottishness" if they were wearing trousers.

Also, the Irish wore kilts before the Scots did. However, originally Irish tartans were established due to location of where you lived rather than what your family name was.

Leave it to the Scots to develop a game - "Hey Angus, I bet I could throw tha' tree further'n you can!"

Thanks for the info on the kilts, being of Irish descent myself, I was wondering if a kilt would be proper - but it's difficult to find any, even online (even in the places I've looked).

Kilts are always appropriate.

Look on Youtube for Robin Williams and Golf.

what kind of footwork drills do you do? i'm curious about what they're like

It's kind of hard to describe. But we work on pivoting and not looking at the feet to see where they're placed. So, one of the drills is to draw a box. You'll put your left foot in the box. You'll want to spin like 360 degrees but now you're right foot is in the box and you're left foot is ahead of you and slightly to the side...stuff like that.

Good on ya bro!

Still a bit sore from throwing all day Saturday. The fun part was it rained tons and so we were soakin wet. I was waitin' for the lightning to either hit a caber or a hammer being thrown.

Mon-6/18

Ladder
1 db power clean and press each arm, 1 chin
2 db power clean and press each arm, 2 chins
3 db power clean and press each arm, 3 chins
Used a 95 pd db for the first and 2nd ladder and an 85 pd db for the 3rd and 4th ladder...used a 35 pd plate for chins on all four ladders

Circuit after ladder
A1)cable pullthrough:190X15X3

The ladder idea is from emails conversation between Dan John and I. I have to say that I was sweatin like a whore on Sunday. My back feels nicely hit today.

*Spent 30ish minutes working with a competitive local bodybuilder guy who wants some more size on his shoulders and traps and thinks power and hang cleans and snatches were the way to go. I can see it's going to take a bit to get the slow and steady movement out the window for these type of movements for him.

Throwing
Just worked on 1/2 to 3/4 power on HWD, LWD, WOB, heavy hammer for technique work
