Depression
It seems like, for a lot of people, being overweight and depression are linked. Which one causes the other is kind of a chicken and egg question. A catch-22 where the more you weigh, the more depressed you get, and the more depressed you get, the more you eat. I've battled the two for many years. I've been on anti-depressants, and they really helped. But I never wanted that to be my long term solution. I don't know that I've found my long term solution, but I'm working towards it, and that's what really matters. I am not a doctor, and if you are seriously depressed, you should see one. It helps.
That being said, I have found several things that GREATLY affect my mood and help ward off the lowest of the lows. The longer I live, the more I believe that the mind and body are closely linked, and the better you treat your body, the better your mind works. Things that help:
1. Drinking plenty of water.
2. Getting exercise at least five days a week.
3. Avoiding hunger/low blood sugar -- This is a big one for me. If my blood sugar gets too low I turn into a crazy, crying, angry, depressed mess. It has caused some serious meltdowns in the past. Avoiding the low blood sugar thing has several facets.
--Not eating a bunch of sugary stuff, which then causes a huge crash.
--Making sure I always have a healthy snack in my purse.
--Eating a high fiber diet, with enough protein...this helps me stay fuller, longer, and avoids the sugar crashes.
--Eating when I'm hungry. I refuse to be on a starvation diet. If I am truly hungry, I eat something.
4. Last but not least is eating healthy fats. I always make sure I get enough Omega-3's from canola oil, flax seeds, flax seed oil and salmon.
I'm not saying I've found some miracle cure, or that I'm perfect in my attempt. I still have bouts of depression, but usually I can pin it on slipping up and not taking care of myself in the above ways. I am posting this here in hopes that it gives you some insight into who I am and why I eat and exercise the way I do and maybe someone will get some information that may help them be happier. I just want everyone to be happy!
