bench press

i was wondering, the closer your hands are together when your benching is it easier or harder? also im like 5'6 and i was wondering if there should be a certain position to hold the bar depending on ur weight/height?

about shoulder width apart is going to be optimal for chest growth i think, but mostly its all about whats comfortable to you. the closer grip is going to put more stress on your triceps than anything else.

I am only comfortable in the wide grip. It's weird. And it depends what you think is "hard" I'll tell you what they work though-- the wider, the more chest. The closer, the more triceps and arms. That's the basic rule.

But if your goal was to actually work triceps, keep your elbows close in towards your torso...

Lol, yeah mreik, I used to do close-grip and I would just end up benching with my elbows out all far and my wrists bent like 90 degrees. I looked like I was doing the chicken dance.

lol, you're not alone!! when i just started in the lifting scene my coach told me that close grip bench was a good tricep builder.. i was like aweseome (i wanted big tris at the time), and i did them for like 2 months, elbows as far out as they could go, and wondered why i made no gains.. 'till my football coach came while we were workn out and laughed at me lolol

i have a long trunk and arms, so I have to take a slightly wider than shoulder width grip to avoid too much tricep targetting when benching.

When your benching is it ok if you feel a pull in the top of your shoulders at the end of the movement. or should i go back up b4 this happens?
