Andrew's Journey to Everest

That's an insanely large loss in less than two weeks! Nice work, personally I would recommend trying to slow it down a little in terms of it really being healthy to aim for 1% of your body weight per week (based mostly on broad reading and research of this topic)- though as you've pointed out you will probably see it reduce in the weeks and months ahead, I also experienced my largest drops in the first couple of weeks. Keep up the great work :D

I really agree with you on this and trust me, I'm not taking drastic measures as far as I'm concerned it just seems to be falling off me. I'm finding a good target for daily intake and stick to that. In the past I've never seen this kind of rapid loss up front.

If it doesn't slow down soon should I be at all concerned or just go with it if I feel good?

But it is nice eh! It is great and very encouraging to make a good start. I also have the feeling that weight is literally falling off me, by simply sticking to a calorie target. I would say: enjoy it while it lasts!

Haha, yes I agree completely, I'm going to enjoy it now and it will just make me work at it harder to keep the graph on the downward trend.

January 13th, 2011

Today's weigh in came with a little gain over yesterday, but I'm not too suprised: 284.8

Yesterday I was very good with no cheating, but I did eat a little more protein than usual and had my first decent session on the new treadmill doing over 2 miles. Calorie intake was: 1736.

I'm not going to be discouraged by that at all and am sticking to what obviously is working for me. A short post for now, but I'm off for a walk and then heading in to work early.

Have a great day everyone and thanks for reading!

Yeah weight will definitely fluctuate on a day to day basis, week by week seems to give a better idea overall- and you certainly shouldn't be discouraged indeed, you've done great. 1736 is still fine to create a defecit for someone of your weight.

Good morning world!

Well another little gain for me this morning, two days in a row. I'm fine with that because I know that I put a target amount of calories in all week and this is a result of the new exercise program and the natural tendancy to retain some fluids for muscle repair.

Weight Yesterday: 284.8
Weight Today: 286.4 (+1.6)

Calories Yesterday: 1830

Yesterday was my first day of being able to do two workouts on the new treadmill. I did a total of 3 miles, mostly walking a quick pace, but a little running thrown in. I'm not much of a runner, but we'll work on it as the weight comes off.

Have a great day everyone and keep up the good work.

Morning everyone!

So I missed my posting yesterday, but no worries, I was being a good boy.

Yesterday I weighed in at 286.8 which is up a bit again from prior days. Again, fine with that because I know the body will do that from time to time and with the exercise it's bound to happen for a while.

We were up early as a family yesterday to drive to a hockey tournament a couple hours away. With the snow we've been getting, it was almost 3 hours. Proud to say that the kids took the gold in the tournament and I was a good boy and didn't eat the hot dogs and french fries that they had at the snack bar.

The team found this excellent little resturant that just opened and I had a bowl of chili and a salad, it was one of the be chili's I've ever had. Dinner was just baked beans on toast with some veggies, but it was pretty late so I'm glad of that.

Did a 1.5 mile walk/run when I got home on the treadmill as well.

This morning I'm happy to say that the efforts are paying off again and I'm down to 282! That's a total of 20lbs lost this month. Just finished my breakfast and we're off to another hockey game followed by skating lessons for my younger son which I'm on the ice for.

Have a great day everyone, keep up the fight!

Yesterday was a real mix for me and probably a lot of other guys out there. Big day for football. My brother is a big Pats fan and invited me over to check out the new TV he bought (60" LCD) and watch the game. I was reasonably good but did enjoy a few potato chips, 1 beer and two slices of pizza. Call it a cheat day or whatever, I felt like I was in control!

Contrast that with the rest of the day where it was Oatmeal for breakfast and salad with light tuna for lunch, I think I did well. Calorie intake was between 1800 and 2000, it's really hard to tell with the pizza.

This morning, I was 284 which is up 2lbs from yesterday. I drank a ton of water after being outside shovelling for 2 hours (whew!) and a really good session on the treadmill last evening.

Today, I'm aiming to get back on the track again, get two sessions on the treadmill and hope there is no more snow!

Have a great day everyone, keep up the fight!

Wow Andrew you are doing amazing and so positive in your attitude towards reaching your goal, well done :)

Thanks for the encouragment!

This is at least my fourth time trying to get myself to a healthy weight and I think this is the first time that I'm really bringing out a positive attitude and desire to loose the extra. In previous attempts, it was always something health related that trigged me to try. Kidney Stones was a big one.

This time a goal is helping along with posting a daily entry on this board. Hopefully we're all on a journey to feeling better and doing what we really want to do in life.

This morning another little uptick in weight to 285.4 or +1.4 from yesterday. I'm thinking that I'm at the point right now where I've leveled off and I'm going to bounce around for a bit depending on the previous days water intake, exercise and when my last meal was. As long as I don't start to feel discouraged, I'm going to continue to track on a day-by-day basis and see if any patterns emerge.

If you start seeing the negitive creep in to my post, just give me a heads up so I can give my head a shake and maybe take a couple of days off from the daily weigh-ins.

Take care everyone, have a good day!

Morning!

How is everyone today? I think in the past few days, I'm really starting to get some energy back durning the day, it's amazing what a few pounds and a goal will do to you. I'm going to have to start some research on new things to eat, the old standards are starting to get a little boring.

This morning, I did the weigh-in and came out at 284, so down 1.4 from yesterday. I'm really in the bounce mode right now, but I expect any day to have a few good days of loss again. If I can hit a steady 280 by the end of the month I'll be quite happy.

Yesterday, I took some time to email a few trekking companies to find out if my son will be old enough when I want to do it. So far, just one response from the company I really want to go with and it's looking good. According to them, it's more about the effort that they will put in and past experience than age. In 2013, he'll be 11.

Didn't get on the treadmill yesterday because of Scout meetings for our winter camp, but we'll get back at it today. The camp will feature a ton of snowshoeing, so I know I'll get my exercise there. I just bought some new snowshoes too, which I'm very excited about.

Have a good day everyone.

Have you thought about only weiging in once a week, or does it not bother you to see it bounce around day by day? Just thinking in terms of maintaining motivation (though I think you have that in bucket loads anyway)

Hey Caiman, I've thought about it but quite honestly I find it somewhat amusing right now! I know exactly what I put into my body and I KNOW that I can't have added 1.4lbs of fat or muscle in a day it's just not possible. If I do cheat and I see an increase I know not to repeat that mistake.

Motivation isn't an issue, I have a goal greater than a number to accomplish and if I fail I'm not only letting myself down but my son for the trip and all my friends and family for my future.

The other reason is the software I use gets a more accurate picture early on with more data to crunch. Once I'm past a month, I'll probably weigh every other day or every three days as I'll have a baseline built up.

Thanks for following along, I'll check in on your diary too.

A trek to Everest basecamp! thats also a dream of mine.

I can't wait! Already starting to plan it at least the training goals. The company that we are probably going to go with spends three full days in Base Camp with their climbing teams so you get a real good expereice. Costs a bit more, but will be worth it.

That sounds pretty cool.....definitely not something I would do, because I'm a huge sissy.... But it sounds cool..LOL!. Great goal to work towards! Good luck! :)

Hey Tob, I couldn't agree more! I love buying new gear although there isn't much more I need. I can tell by your pic that you are a fan of The North Face. We're a fair way off from the actual trip, but I'll start to post some of the training pics this spring and summer.

I was speaking with one of the owners of the company we are going to travel with about doing a trek like this with a younger kid. He has no problem with it given my son's previous experience but wanted us to do a little training at altitude before putting a deposit down next January. I'm thinking a see a trip late this spring out to Alberta in my future. If that's the case, I need to step up the training side of things.

Today was a positive 282.4 pounds or -1.6 from yesterday. I'm sensing a drop right past that 282 which is my low weight so far.

A good eating day yesterday too, I stayed on track even with a small Whole Wheat Pasta Dinner with ground chicken in the sauce. Today should be a good one as well.

Have a great day everyone!

This is my last update for a couple of days, we're off to our annual Winter Camp for Scouts. Lots of snowshoeing and outdoor activities planned for the kids along with some good meals. It's going to be really cold, so I'm not sure if I'm actually looking forward to the weekend or not!

Today's weigh in: 282.2 or -0.2 from yesterday.

I must confess that I was taken out to lunch for Greek food and I probably overdid it a bit. My calorie counting says I'm OK, but I'm not sure that I believe all the numbers that the resturant provides. This is really the first time I've eaten out at a place where I'm unsure of the content of the food, calorie wise anyway, since I started Jan 1.

I'm taking along extra veggies and low-cal options for this camp, but I'll have to really find that balance between what my body needs because of the outdoor activities and continuing to loose some weight over the weekend.

Have a great day everyone!

sounds great man, Yeah i am a fan of TNF and some other company. I do lots of hiking my house boarders state game lands so I can walk across the yard and be on a hike.
Can I ask what the trip to base camp will run you... or perhaps the name of the company you are booking it through? im interested. I was in Alaska two years ago... LOVED IT.
also glad to hear you are doing well with your weight loss keep up the good work.
