Andrew's Journey to Everest

Hey Tob,

Nice having access to State land like that. I have a Provincial Park a short drive away, but the trails are fairly short. Excellent snowshoeing in the winter though.

We're looking right now at IMG (International Mountain Guides). The trip that we're looking at is around $4000 per person plus International flights. That's pretty much all inclusive except a few meals before the trek starts and a contribution to the tip pool for the Sherpas. It's about 21 days on the ground in Nepal.

I've had some great discussions with the owners about this trip. It's all on my shoulders to get in shape to do it properly. I'd even push the date up to 2012 if I worked hard enough at it although saving for it would be harder than me prepping for it!

These guys also guide full expeditions to Everest and around the world.

Wow! What a weekend!

Winter camping with my Scouts on the coldest weekend of the year so far. We hit -30C or -22F without the windchill, that's COLD!

We did 4 good snowshoe trips over the weekend plus I did a couple more setting up activities for the kids. What a workout, the new snowshoes were perfect. All told, about 15km of trail breaking, mostly yesterday.

I stuck to my plan as best I could and only endulged in a little more pasta than I should have last night, but I know I needed those carbs. Avoided hot dogs, processed meat and potato chips and stuck with my usual Oatmeal breakfast. Also stuck to tea instead of coffee since I can't drink coffee without cream.

No weight update today, I just got home and it's not the right time of day to be accurate. I have to say that it was a fantastic weekend and I felt great getting outdoors even with the crazy cold.

Hope everyone else is having a good weekend!

Sounds like an awesome weekend for exercise! I need to take a leaf out of your book, weekends tend to be when my routine fails somewhat and I end up lazing about the place through Saturday and Sunday.

It's funny, I had to be the one to motivate the kids to get moving this weekend. I think my favorite hike was on Saturday night around 10pm, we went out on the trails by headlamp just me, another leader and a couple of the kids. Nice and quiet, snow falling and bitter cold.

I find that weekends can be tough too, I really have to find something to do in advance or it's just a lot of sitting around the house, especially in winter.

Good to be back to the wired world today. It's a lot easier to eat well when I'm working at client sites and don't have a the fridge nearby. My legs are killing me this morning from the exercise this weekend.

This evening, we're taking the same group of Scouts to the local Indoor Rock Climbing facility. Should be a lot of fun, I love climbing it's a really good total body workout. And if you are bigger like me, don't worry about it, even the kids can belay me back down the wall.

So after a day of recovery from our winter camping, I'm starting to feel somewhat normal again except that I pulled something in my arm/shoulder last night while doing the last climb! Nothing serious, just really stiff this morning. Won't stop me from getting on the treadmill though!

Today I got up at my usual time and did a proper weigh-in, I'm very pleased to see 281.6 this morning which is a new low. I'm really hoping that this is the downward trend now that I've been hovering around the 283 mark for over a week. Of course I knew that would happen, so it's not really a shock.

A good breakfast of Oatmeal and off to work. A little snow to shovel on the way out too.

Check in later today, but have a good day everyone!

Good morning!

Had an excellent session on my treadmill last night, for the first time I was able to complete my 4 minutes fast walking and 1 minute running intervals for 40 minutes without stopping or slowing down. I even did the final 2 minutes in a run. I felt like I could go on and on, but called it a night to get a good sleep.

Off to give it another go this morning although I never seem to have the energy that I have in the evening. I'm looking forward to winter being over so I can start walking in the morning outside.

This morning's weigh-in was good too, I'm at 280.6.

The month of January has flown by, I can't believe what a difference it makes to log everything online as well as in my software. Huge motivation.

Have a great day everyone!

Well, today I'm proud to say that I've burned through the 280's and am now at 279.6 pounds! It's been one heck of a month, I'm looking forward to keeping this up and setting a new short-term goal for February.

I'm not sure exactly what number to shoot for yet, but I want to keep my eye on the prize and keep going down the healthy path here.

Some friends of mine are bugging me to join them in a race this summer called the Warrior Dash, a 3.5mile obsticale course through muck, water, fire and other obsticales. I'm thinking it would be a lot of fun, but a challenge to be in that kind of shape to pull through it. They say you don't have to be in perfect shape for the event, but that's going to be nutty! I think I just found my mid-term goal for the next 6 months.

Anyone every try something like that?

Have a great day everyone!

I think I'm going to have to up the Vitamin C and fluids because I feel a cold coming on! The rest of the family already has/had a cold so I thought I might get away without picking it up myself. No such luck I guess.

Doesn't matter though, I can still stick to my diet and get on the treadmill, no need to stop. This morning I was 279.2 or -.4 from yesterday. Finishing at 278 for the month would be great and I can set an obtainable goal for February. I somehow doubt that another 20 lbs can come off, but we'll see what the body says, I'm not going to change a thing since it's working.

Have a great day everyone and as always, feel free to post, I love getting mail.

No i haven't but a good friend of mine LOVES that. and it looks like a lot of fun... and you get dirty.. really dirty haha.

also congrats on the improvements and weight loss. keep it up and you will get to base camp and run up the mountain!

Yesterday was a victory in many ways, not with another pound lost or extra mile that I ran (because I did neither of those). A client was having a lunch for some of his employees and asked me to join, but didn't tell me that it was an all you can eat Japanese resturant!

Resturants and I have are a bad mix to begin with, let alone the all you can eat, family style service where they bring dishes to the table to share. It's impossible to count the calories and remember what you ate to log it later, mostly because I didn't know the names of most of it.

My rule when I went in was to avoid anything battered or fried and to only have one of any particular item. I suceeded for the most part although there was a grilled chicken dish that was excellent. Temptation is out there for those of us who want to improve our health and there are plenty of people that aren't willing to help. Willpower in this situation won and proved to me that I didn't need to stuff my face to have a good time. We all have goals and can stick to them!

Today what exactly the same as yesterday at 279.2lbs.

I'm planning to either go to the gym today to test out my shoulder or go snowshoeing at the local Provincial Park. I need to wake up my wife to see what the plan is for the day.

I hope everyone has a winning day today, keep up the good work!

January 31st is here, I can't believe it's been a whole month on the new plan. Here is the history so far:

WL-Jan11-Chart.jpg

Start Weight: 302
End of Month: 278.4
Loss for the Month: 23.6
Avg Loss per Day: 0.76
Avg Loss per Week: 5.36

Goals for February:
It's been a really good January and I know that my weight loss will slow down now, it's just natural. I'm setting some realistic and obtainable goals that will match my goal weight plans to reach 200lbs by the end of the year.

Starting Weight: 278.4
Goal by End of Month: 267.7
Goal loss by End of Month: 10.7
Avg Loss per Day: 0.38
Avg Loss per Week: 2.675

How am I going to do it?

Continue eating proper portions and chosing healthy options only. Avoid cheat days at all costs as this is where trouble starts for me. Treadmill at least once per day and gym or other strength activity twice a week.

Please feel free to post your comments and or suggestions on my journal posting, I really like when people give a little boost. I'm also resolving to follow others and see what they are up to. We are all working towards a common goal, let's work together!

Hey everyone,

It's been a couple of days since I've posted, but not to worry I'm still on the plan and on target. It's been very busy with work and such, but today is a snow day for me. No way am I driving into the city today, they have no idea how to drive in the snow!

Got caught up on some work and shoveled the driveway a few times. One thing I hate about being at home is that there is so much food easily available and I have a habit of opening the fridge for no particular reason. I've been drinking lots of water and tea today just to keep the habit at bay.

Off for a nice workout on the treadmill now. I'm 277.4 today and feeling fine.

Later.

It's been a rough few days with this cold, but I've been sticking to the calorie budget and watching what I'm eating plus getting in some exercise. Happy to report that I'm down to 274 this morning or a loss of 28 pounds in 37 days.

I'm starting to really get the feeling that my body doesn't want to be a fat guy and all my excuses that it "runs in the family" are a load of s$#t. I know now that I was eating the worst stuff for me in way too much quantity. I'm not on a diet now, I'm still eating things I like, just less of them in a more sensible way. Avoiding the crap has been easy and I know it's something I can stick with for a long, long time!

Best to everyone out there.

Hey everyone,

Thought I would check in and record my progress, it's been a few days since I've posted.

Things are going well for me, the weight loss has slowed down a bit, but that's probably my own fault for not getting exercise as often as I should. In any case, I'm now 271.4, that's a loss of 30.6lbs since January 1st, 2011! I'm going to aim for 265 by the end of the month, but it's going to be a challenge.

Here is a question for those of you who have been working on getting in shape for a while. We travel quite a bit and I find that this is when I lose focus and fall off the bandwagon. We are considering a two week trip down to Florida and more specifically, Walt Disney World. We've been there many times, but if you have any tips for staying focused on your goal when you are away and can't count calories as easily, please let me know!

One thing I'm considering is spending the extra money to get a villa with a full kitchen. This would give us the option of cooking some meals and not having to eat out all the time. It's more expensive, but might be worth it!

I know we do a ton of walking, so I'm not worried about exercise as much, it's the eating out part.

Thanks for reading!
