Amy's weight loss diary

And I'm currently having a loooooong winded discussion on Facebook with my best friend about the general inferiority of junk food in the UK. I'm going back to visit my family in July. I run the risk of getting seriously fat.

O_O
I thought that in Australia there is less junk food than in UK.
(okok, i know that the sentence is grammatically wrong, but i'm not able to say it in another way :D)

If you're interested (I used to do some work on the side with people learning English as a second language), the correct sentence would be "I thought there was less junk food in Australia than in the UK".

I'd say there are similar amounts of junk food and people eat similar amounts of junk food... except the stuff here isn't as good. It's hard to explain (I'm sure any of my UK friends looking at the exchange my friend and I are having have no idea what we're talking about, because we're talking about things and how good/ bad they are on the basis of stuff that's pretty much only available in Australia)

Have fun at the gym, young lady.
But excusssse me, our junk food here is justttt fine, i'll have you know. It certainly played its part in helping me get fat. Sorry. I'm feeling patriotic. Or something.

You've obviously never tasted ... (I did just write a list of the junk food I miss acutely but I'm going to censor myself).

Lol self-censorage. I keep looking at pictures of cookies and wondering how you could actually MAKE THEM and not eat them.

Want gym updates pleeeease. I saw on facebook that you super charged your workout despite not having been at the gym for a week.

I've blocked you from seeing my "food" album for your own sanity. You don't want to look at that. I'll upload the diet friendly stuff here. (speaking of which, tried the chicken and mango stirfry with different alterations- just eating it now- and it's absolutely delicious)

Went to the gym, decided to make up for lost time, which I think is a mistake although I haven't been feeling anything yet. Warmed up on the rowing machine and did stretches, then did lower body weights routine (3x12 squats with 4kg dumbells, 3x12 hamstring straight leg deadlift with 4kg dumbells, 3x12 standing calf raise with single 4kg dumbell- the other hand was keeping me balanced- 3x12 lying hip abduction with single 4kg dumbell- that is, 3x12 on each side- 3x12 on each side side lunges, 3x12 each leg scissor kick, 3 sets of planks (each held for 30 seconds- side, middle, other side, middle)), which I've maxed out the reps on and might move up to 5kg depending on the DOMS I have tomorrow, and cardio (20 min cross trainer- up from 15- 15 min climber thingy not sure what it's called- up from 10- 500m rowing as fast as I could without feeling I wanted to vomit- that was a downgrade). Then wanted to cool down but I do that on the rower, so random 3x12 bicep curls with 4kg dumbells, then leisurely 3 min row and stretches.

Nice work at they gym amy :)

I also have to agree that Aus junk food is better than UK junk and so does hubby (he is English) :D

How does your husband cope with being in Queensland? My boyfriend sometimes complains about the "heat" around here (hahaha, they don't know the meaning of the word, they're telling me it's hot when it gets over 15!), and I threaten that if we get married, I'm going to try to get a job in Queensland so he can learn the true meaning of the word heat.

my husband handles the heat better than I do lol, give me an ice rink in the middle of a Canberra winter dressed in only T and shorts makes me feel comfortable, I love the cold but hate the heat unfortunately there is more work in Queensland lol.

Sounds like my boyfriend. In the dead of winter here (keeping in mind I'm towards the north of England) he says "oh, it's a little bit parky, isn't it?" I stare at him like he's lost his mind and say "it's below freezing and it's been snowing for a week. It's f***ing freezing!"

Glad you had a good workout! Remind me never go down under if the junk food really is more delicious! My diet really would be turned upside down.

What are your email addesses for facebook amy and caffeine high?

I'm a nightmare with the weather. Anything under 21 is to cold, and anything over 24 is too hot! I am soooo not looking forwards to sweating in the heat- all the more motivation to lose weight. I sweat so easily. Its gross. I worked in a chip shop once and was surprised someone wasn't employed to mop up the puddles of sweat after me.

Diary time. Today was a good day. Had a bit of a scare because my calorie counting program crashed out and I didn't think I was going to get it back, but it came back after a tense 5 minutes of cursing at the computer.

I have some inflamed skin on my hands (just below my thumbs on the back of my hand on both sides) which I'm a little concerned about. Don't think it's related to this but I feel like mentioning it.

Tuesday 24 May

Breakfast: (pictured) 45g oats, made with 400ml water, with 38g frozen blueberries, 30g frozen raspberries (this worked really well), and 26g Greek yoghurt (had intended to add milk as well, but forgot. Was a little hot but didn't alter texture/ taste significantly). Subtotal: 203 calories, 7g protein, 33g carbs, 4g fat. 14/66/20

Snack: 2 cups of coffee (57ml milk with 227ml coffee, then 226ml coffee with 44ml milk) and a 71g kiwi fruit. Subtotal: 74 calories, 4g protein, 12g carbs, <1g fat. 25/68/7 split.

Lunch: remaining tuna mornay (156g) with 281g (2- very nice) zucchini, and 179g raw carrot. Subtotal: 255 calories, 17g protein, 41g carbs, 4g fat. 24/61/15

(pictured: diet Bundaberg ginger beer, haven't had any today, but really excited to have it in the house. I love it to pieces- not as much as the full sugar stuff, but still :drool5:)

After gym snack: Graze "desert island nuts" mix (almonds, brazil nuts, coconut- this is my fat downfall for the day) and a 124g gala apple. Then a cup of tea at my boyfriend's place (it was a small mug and I told him to be really stingy with the milk- so perhaps 200ml tea and 35ml milk). Subtotal: 357 calories (graze thing was 283, too high calorie), 8g protein, 18g carbs, 27g fat (virtually all of that was the graze thing). 10/21/69 (yes, that lot was 69% fat!)

Dinner: (the batch of what I made is pictured) Chicken and pineapple stir fry* (321g) with 80g "cauliflower rice". Subtotal: 382 calories, 17g protein, 38g carbs, 17g fat. 18/40/42

Dessert: (pictured- yes, I know my bowl is cracked) 101g Cox apple, 63g plum (both "steamed"), with 80g strawberries, 80g frozen black forest fruit mix, 102g Greek yoghurt, and cinnamon. Subtotal: 222 calories, 7g protein, 41g carbs, 3g fat. 14/73/14.

Total: 1495 calories (84%), 63g protein (need more ways to get more protein), 186g carbs, 57g fat (that was 148% of my allowance :( ), 2924.4ml water, 1318.8mg sodium (88% of allowance). 16/49/35 split. I don't understand why it's so difficult for me to get enough protein (although I completely understand why the fat's so horrific today. No more brazil nuts).

* Adapted from: Actually used 336g chicken breast, 263g canned pineapple (drained), 82g salad onions, 13g garlic, 21g ginger, 111g capsicum (yellow (bell) pepper), 14g olive oil, 26ml reduced salt soy sauce, 36g sweet chilli sauce, and a vegetable/ beansprout stir fry mix.

Hi Amy,
I just looked through your diary, and all your diet and exercise information is so detailed! I'm going to imitate you and try to include more details about my daily routine. Your workouts sound so intense! Keep up the good work and thanks again for your help!

PS. I'm studying abroad in London next semester, so I was very excited to see that you live in the UK!

Thank you :) Unfortunately I'm on the other side of the UK- over 150 miles from London (which in the UK is a long way- being from Australia I think that's a little laughable, but it's a bit of an effort to get down to London, not to mention the cost, which is horrendous). Carrie lives in London, I think.

The more diaries like mine the better- that way I have something to steal as well :D (you're more than welcome to steal any ideas from me- although this is what works for me and so may not work for you, and I'd stress that with the workouts you don't want to jump into something like what I'm doing without advice. Trusylver helped me)

Do you use a calorie calculator? Mine gives me all of this information if I tell it what I'm eating and how much of it.

And on the exercise- surprisingly I have virtually no DOMS this morning. I'll see how the upper body workout goes but I think with the lower body one I'll up to 5kg (3x8, I'm not completely stupid). I think eliminating the supplemental quad and hamstring exercises made the workout much more manageable.

Need to get my shit together. I don't want to talk about it in detail, but some issues have crept up on me without realising it, and I need a good shakeup. This may affect the course of my weight loss- I think I might need to take a step back from everything and re-evaluate. I've had a nagging feeling about this for weeks, but not said anything because I couldn't put my finger on it and thought I was overreacting. My boyfriend's named what I think is going on, and suddenly all the pieces fall into place. I feel incredibly stupid for not recognising it. Long story short, I need help. Not the kind of help I can get here, nothing that any of you need to worry about, but definitely some sort of intervention.

I'll continue as I am for the moment but things may be changing soon. We'll see.
