Alligatorob's Diary

Well done for being so active Rob!! I wouldn’t know a thing about hiking boots all I know is it’s so important to have the right gear for walking ( I have 3 pairs of amazing shoes for them )

I'm loving all this gardening talk! I'm going to have to get into it, too, at however humble a level. And I'm also reading with keen attention the intelligent input about shoes and walking - thanks, Rob, and everyone, for sharing all this. :)

Kate what type of shoes do you wear. I hate hiking boots . AlwYs looking for a pair more like trainers .

Rob I don't grow much except apples plums really . And herbs !

It was a good day, I ate well, exercised and I feel good. I went over 1,200 calories for the first time in a long while. I hope its the right thing to be doing, m
What do you do with all those peaches? Do you have a fruit stand?
We have a farmer who takes care of them and sells the fruit. We get all the peaches we can eat. Last year the peach market was down so he did not take most of them. I figure we ended up with something over a ton. We juiced and froze a lot, got about 30 gallons of pure peach juice, also made wine, about 15 gallons, and froze a bunch of sliced peaches. And while they were ripening I was getting over half of my calories from peaches. Problem now is what to do with all that juice and wine. We have given a lot of the juice away, the wine is going more slowly. Come by and I can give you a frozen gallon or so.
"Taking on life with optimism"
I sure work at it, its worth it.
I absolutely love my hiking boots, Rob. They are Scarpas.
I looked Scarpa boots up, they look quite rugged. Which model do you have? I see I can get them by mail order, will look to see if there is a local retail outlet. I would be concerned about not being able to try them on first.
making sure you feather the impact in your knees. Don't land on a straight knee and suddenly you have a movement that's interesting for your muscles instead of hard on your joints.
I know that is good advice, and I try, it takes a bit of thinking about it.

LaMa and Cate, you are right about the protein, I did better today.

Well done for being so active Rob!!
Thanks Kate, it is kind of fun to be able to do active things, its been a while.

You can be pretty humble and still know more than me. I like gardening, but am far from an expert.

Apples, plums and herbs sound good to me!

Apparently my divine purpose is coming, I have been waiting for it.

They look a little like boots I had. I used to wear hiking boots but I just destroyed them. I’m very hard on shoes. The soles split or detach very quickly. Generally speaking a shoe only lasts 6 months for me regardless of quality. That being said my under armour joggers have lasted since September last year and are showing no signs of failure. I find them great for hiking on smooth trails. Not so good for muddy or rocky trails but meh ‍

Under armour joggers sounds good . I need the freedom of trainers . Hiking boots give me no comfort .
Rob yes definitely try them on .
Can you defrost your peaches to have for breakfast with yoghurt perhaps ? You need to use them up before the next crop .

I thought it was inspiring us all here! :D

I love the thought of the next peach season rolling around - it was such a glorious abundance you reported last year. Of course, you won't be assuming anything about this year (prices might be up!) but apart from that Petal's in the right of it - now's the time to hoe into the frozen sliced peaches (yum!) before you need the freezer space for the coming crop. Oh, I would so gladly "help out" with the eating of them, if I lived nearby!

It was a good day, I ate well, exercised and feel good. Got in an early morning bike ride and watched the sunrise from the bike, a little walking also.

I got a new pair of hiking boots, a kind of compromise, heavier than trainers, but lighter than some hiking boots. I did a short ~30 min walk around the house focusing on rough and steep ground. They felt pretty good, a big improvement over my tennis shoes. This is the first pair of hiking boots I have had in a long time, my feet and the boots will take a little getting used to each other.

I have not said anything about my knees in a long time but thought I'd update that story tonight. My knees have been giving me trouble for years, nothing terrible, but more pain that I would like. Part of the reason I chose biking as my first exercise was that I thought it would be easier on the knees than walking and that did turn out to be the case. I also found that as I strengthened my legs my knees felt better, not cured but better. When I started the weight training I decided to go to a knee doctor, first time. He x-rayed both knees and told me that I have some arthritis in both, and that my cartage was thin, but still there. He said the best thing I could do for the knees was to keep losing weight and exercise. He also said that I should not worry about damaging them, that if I could take the pain more exercising would help. I am pretty happy about that, my standard approach to problems like this has always been to try and ignore them and hope they go away, guess that's what I will keep doing. And the pain is minimal.
My boots are like this- https://m.paddypallin.com.au/scarpa-cyrus-mid-gore-tex-boot-womens.html
They are so soft & very comfortable. Do you have any hiking stores anywhere near you?
I looked but could not find any Scarpa's near by. I did find a store that had a pretty good selection, in the end I choose these: 453 5.5" Brown but found them at a better price. So far so good.
I can imagine how lovely it would be to get a good portion of ones calories from peaches!
It was, and I am looking forward to doing it again! Only problem is getting enough protein, but I'll figure it out.
I always like to hear that people enjoy their exercise!
This is kind of new for me, I have always hated, or thought I hated exercise. This time is different, so far I am liking it.
under armour joggers
Thanks TM, they did have these at the store I went to, but I decided on something more substantial for hiking. The trail I want to do is pretty steep and rocky, I need some ankle support and a rigid sole. That said I am thinking the under armor joggers might be a good replacement for my usual tennis shoes, I am still wearing the same shoes I bought a couple of years ago based more on comfort than utility. And they are too big now, my feet have lost weight too.
Can you defrost your peaches to have for breakfast with yoghurt perhaps ?
Excellent idea, I just put a package from the freezer to the refrigerator and when my blueberries run out in the next day or so I will go to peaches on my breakfast cereal. Not sure why I have not been doing that all along. We do have some chance of using up all the frozen peaches before next season, but probably not the juice or wine. Wine keeps and if all else fails I can thaw the juice and make more wine.
I would so gladly "help out" with the eating of them, if I lived nearby!
You would be welcome Amy, you don't have to move here, only visit! It would be nice to meet you, face to face.
I haven’t read 100 pages
Good to see you here Z, welcome to the forum! And no you don't need to read many of the pages. I usually just look at the first few and most recent few pages to get a sense as to who people are and what they are doing.
I’ll take some wine but only if we drink it together.
Absolutely!! I would really love to share a drink with you, come by anytime you are always welcome. It would be great to meet you in person. And I do like porridge, assuming you mean oatmeal or grits, I only know porridge from the story of the three bears. I ate a lot of both oatmeal and grits at first, but lately have gone to more dry cereal, just easier I guess.

When I have oats for my breakfast, Rob I usually just soak them overnight in low-fat milk, add berries or stewed fruit & then a dollop of Greek yoghurt on top for extra protein as well as a sprinkle of hemp seeds & a few chopped walnuts for even more protein.
I'm glad you got some suitable hiking boots. I probably should get a new pair to replace these ones as I have had them for years & I'm wearing out the tread.

Yay for good boots! Give your feet a bit of time if they're sensitive. Half an hour is quite enough at first.

Glad you are defrosting the peaches . Sounds great .
4 lb Rob and you are eating more ! Go figure that one ! Yay for a great result .
also good work on finding boots . Make sure you break them in . And I really think it’s time you got new trainers !

Down 4 lbs to 210 this morning, I am happy!

Fantastic. And yes, I meant oatmeal. :) I like the boots.
