Alligatorob's Diary

Those photos look amazing Rob!

Rob you are having a great life now with your walking and going out for a great dinner. I honestly think eating more calories will stand to you . I think a slice of a ham or a piece of after your exercise.
Do you take a drink and a little snack on your walk ?

Lovely to see all your great posts

It was a good day, I ate well, exercised, and feel good. Did my first weight training without the trainer at the gym. I did a few more exercises than usual and worked out for an hour and 20 minutes, 50 minutes with the trainer is normal. It felt good. Just starting my 3rd week of this, I am pretty sure my muscles are no larger or stronger, but I sure know they are there! Went out to dinner again tonight and did fine.
Now that's a lot of protein!
Yes, I have been doing my best to keep the protein up.
I love your positive posts and your enjoyment of life
Thanks Liza, I try, being positive and enjoying life is always better than the alternative.
Those photos look amazing
Thanks TM, I am still struggling a bit to get decent photos on my iphone.
Rob you are having a great life now
Thanks Petal, I have always done my best to make the most of life. The weight loss has really helped with that. I do carry water on the hikes, as they get longer I probably need to add a snack.
That photo of upward view of the mountain is absolutely cool
Thanks Jack, it is a cool view, but getting a decent picture was a bit of a challenge, glad it came across. Now all I have to do is get up there!
That all sounds good to me
Thanks Em

I think you are doing really well managing eating out & exercising, Rob. I love that you really do make the most of life.

Your muscles will take months to become any larger but enhanced coordination and muscle recruitment can make you feel stronger quite soon. I love that you started strength training!

It was a good day, I ate well, exercised, and feel good. I walked 2.4 miles with a rise of almost 500 ft.

I did the hike again, and got farther and higher, but at a cost to my knees. May have over done it a bit. According to Google the last part was a 28% slope and it was rough. I made it to the top of that part only to find no real way forward from there. Then when I tried to get back down the problem arose, my knees just did not want to do downhill on a slope that steep. I ended up sitting down and doing it sliding on my butt, using my feet and legs as breaks. It worked, but my pants will never be the same. And my knees are letting me know about it tonight. It is now pretty clear to me that there is no established trail up the canyon, I will have to do some exploring to see if I can find a different way up. I saw a possible route that would require me to get over or through a barbed wire fence, it would be legal this is all State of Utah land, but its been a while since I have climbed through a fence like that. Guess I will just have to give it a try. Also my knees will probably need to get stronger, I don't think I can avoid, or butt slide down the steep slopes at the top of the canyon. But that's still a ways off. And if it doesn't work I am sure I can find a suitable alternative goal.

The picture shows the steep part of the trail, I slid down on the grass and sagebrush to the left the gravel track. The fence is to the right. This seems to be a favorite ATV/Quad hill climb spot.

Thanks Cate, but I want to be honest and not overstate things. I do try, but like everyone else I have my down days and times, life is good, but not perfect. Before I found this diet I probably had more down time than I do now, but losing weight doesn't solve all problems, and all was not bad when fat. Things are just better now.
Sounds like another great day
Yes it was, thank you Liza.
Your muscles will take months to become any larger but enhanced coordination and muscle recruitment can make you feel stronger quite soon.
Thanks LaMa, I did not know that. To be honest much as I would like to enter the Mr. Universe contest I am not doing this for bigger muscles, and not even to get much stronger, except maybe in my knees. I will be happy with better all around fitness and some improved mobility. I know I am already able to lift a bit more weight than when I started, but I think that is probably just getting used to the exercises more than getting stronger. Maybe that's muscle recruitment?
Love the sound of the shrimp salad.
Yes, it was a good find, the second time I have had it. Very flavorful, even without dressing. I used to order salads with dressing on the side and then not use it, now I just order salads without dressing, it seems to surprise the wait people.

It was in 1283 that Acolnahuacatl became ruler of the Azcapotzalco in the Valley of Mexico. Azcapotzalco was the capital of the Tepanec empire, a predecessor to the Aztecs. Today Azcapotzalco is a part of Mexico City, a few years ago I worked on a big project cleaning up the old oil refinery in Azcapotzalco and turning it into a park. It was interesting, the oil contaminated soil was full of artifacts. The park opened September 16, 2010, the Mexican bicentennial (Bicentennial Park · Attractions ), one of the more memorable projects I have been involved with.

I ended up sitting down and doing it sliding on my butt, using my feet and legs as breaks. It worked, but my pants will never be the same. And my knees are letting me know about it tonight
oh dear that sounds a bit rough--hopefully you'll find better ways in the future! I really like the look of that trail

Oh, ouch. That does look rough. I don't go up steep inclines with rocky, loose scree if I can help it. Rob, hiking sticks might be good for you. I take one with me, but I think LaMa uses two.

I just use walking poles, which are mostly for flattish terrain. Give your knees time to adjust, and always remember that sliding down on your butt is better than breaking something. Your exercises getting a bit easier already is part coordination, part better recruitment of muscle fibers. Your body doesn't allow you to engage all fibers of a muscle at once for fear of hurting itself but that inhibition can get less with practice.

You’ll be amazed how your knees will adapt Rob. That sounds like a really fun hike. Side stepping (small steps) down a steep loose slope can often make it much easier.

Rob an amazing walk and nothing wrong with sliding down as you did . But do try and tackle areas that are safe . Loose rocks can be dangerous .

Oh, Rob! Take care of your knees! These bodies are amazing, but we shouldn't tax them beyond their tolerances!
A sitting-down slide method is fine - Monster's tactic of coming down a bit zig-zag, with your feet sideways to the slope is good, too.
As for your pants - the barbed wire fence might have something to say there, too! :)
All of which adds up to - good for you, with your constant, wonderful stretch-yourself adventures! :hurray:
And that must have been fascinating, working on rehabilitating the refinery land, and finding (or seeing others find) evidence of the life lived there hundreds of years ago.

Hey Rob - the corona virus is getting to lockdown levels in Toronto - not yet but rumours we will be. Hope you guys are keeping well on your end. It's chaos here. Gyms have closed too and grocery stores have been empty.

Yesterday was a good day, I ate well, exercised and felt good. I got to the gym for my weight training and had an eerie feeling. The trainer and I were the only ones in the place, it was abandoned. She said they had no plans to shut down, but that could of course change at any time. They had disinfectant spray everywhere and we disinfected everything before and after touching it. Not that it was very necessary in an empty gym.
I really like the look of that trail
Thanks Liza, it is a nice place to hike, but not much of a "trail" really. That steep spot is a place where the ATV/Quad riders do hill climbs, but that is only a small part of the walk. There seems to be no actual trail to where I want to go, so I am exploring the bushwhacking options for now.
I don't go up steep inclines with rocky, loose scree if I can help it
And I don't think I'll be trying that one again.
Give your knees time to adjust
Thanks LaMa, I need to remember that, and my knees are getting better, its just a slow process.
Side stepping (small steps) down a steep loose slope can often make it much easier.
I did try that and it worked part of the way down, but then it just got too steep even for sidestepping. That's when I sat down.
nothing wrong with sliding down as you did
Maybe not, but it didn't feel very dignified!
As for your pants - the barbed wire fence might have something to say there, too!
Yeah, not a walk for nice new clothes.
Hope you guys are keeping well on your end. It's chaos here. Gyms have closed too and grocery stores have been empty.
Probably not quite as bad here, yet. Every time I hear something and think at least that's not happening here, it happens. Most of our restaurants are still open, particularly the smaller ones, and the stores are all open and moderately well stocked. But that's just today. Let's hope this is all short lived.

Most of our restaurants are still open, particularly the smaller ones,
And they will remain so as long as it´s legal, due to fear of going bankrupt. Which I understand, but can still be a huge source of infection.
