Alligatorob's Diary

I find this whole question - of metabolisms and insulin and so on very interesting, though I don't have a handle on it. I do know that if I eat even a half of what my husband eats I zoom up in weight instantly - I do wonder sometimes if this is my own fault, if I've wrecked my metabolism though years of over-eating and intermittent (crash?)dieting. I think I'll check around this site o see if I can find a learned and detailed discussion of it all.

It was a better day, ate a few more calories and got my bike ride in. I leave for California tomorrow, so may not be able to ride the bike, definitely won't on Wednesday, so it was good I did today.

Amy, it is an interesting subject, let me know what you find out. I know Flyer has a lot of expertise. I think in general women can't eat as much without gaining weight as men, not based on science or anything, just my impressions. I have known men who seemed to me to eat an awful lot without gaining weight. Me, I have eaten an awful lot, but not without gaining weight. Can't say I have ever been in maintenance mode long enough to really know how much I can eat without weight loss. Maybe one day I'll be fortunate enough to find out.

In 1089 England experienced an earthquake, William of Malmesbury wrote "all buildings were lifted up, then settled again as before"and Roger de Hoveden called it "very great" and felt "throughout England". I did not know that England had earthquakes, but apparently it has had quite a few. Most however are not very powerful, though extensive damage was recorded from the 1580 and 1884 earthquakes. The 1580 quake was the worst, with a likely Richter Scale reading of 5.8. By contrast the most powerful earthquakes are usually in the upper 8s and lower 9s. The 1589 quake was centered on the English Channel and felt in France as well. More recently it helped inform the Chunnel design.

I am down 2 lbs to 253 this morning - that's 67 lbs to date. I am happy! A day early for my weigh in, but tomorrow I'll be in California without my scale.

Thanks all, I just chose red, didn't know it was going to be cinnamon until too late. LaMa, thanks for providing some science to my impressions of men vs women. Emily, I don't think that's where the muscles are.

Thanks all, it was a good day.

I sat in a window seat, rare for me, and got a really nice sunset view. Flying from Salt Lake to Oakland is more or less due west, into the sun. I sun went down just before we took off and we chased it across Nevada and California. It was clear and the mountains were nicely back lit by an orange sky for an hour and a half. The Sierra Nevada were visible for well over 100 miles. Even as we landed you could see San Francisco across the bay back lit by a dying sunset. Maybe I'll choose a window seat more often.

It was also a good day because I really appreciated my new size. I fit in the airplane seat a lot better than I used to, I can give Delta back their seat belt extender. I was even able to put the tray table down with a bit of a gap, its been a long time since I have been able to do that. The downside was I could not find any business clothes that were not baggy, but that felt good too.

I ate more calories today than usual, mostly because I kind of snacked and grazed my way here. I think I found good food to graze on, and am happy about it. The calories were fine.

In 1299 Florence banned Arabic numerals, allowing only Roman numerals. Not an action that took much foresight, and one that fortunately didn't take.

What a satisfying day.

I love this!
Well done, Rob :)

Yay for fitting into your seat, enjoying the sunset, and clothes getting baggy! That's amazing. Chasing the sunset sounds lovely as well :beating:
Trying to go back to Roman numerals after you're used to Arabic would be insane, especially in a city big on finance.

So happy to read all this Rob you are amazing . I hope this gives you the confidence and the will power to follow the journey you are on . And well done on the weight loss . Happy for you

Oh, these are the real pay-offs, aren't they? The real-life things, like having the tray-table sit down flat (and with a bit of a gap!) and not feeling the edges of the seat uncomfortably tight, or digging into your sides. The numbers on the scales are really useful as motivators or warning signs, but it's the daily being able to live comfortably, healthily and strongly that feels so good! What a great way to kick off your trip!

(I bet the older Florentines were feeling all superior about youth not knowing how to handle a "proper" number system, like those articles starting to pup up, about younger people not knowing how to use a dial telephone or a record player.)

Thanks all, the airplane and baggy clothes did feel good. Its been a while since i flew and went to a business meeting, so they were new things for me. Amy, you are right, those are the more real benefits, seeing the scale go down is just a metric.

I would imagine that is more common than you and I would like to think. A few years ago my young 5 or 6 year old grandson was watching me play solitaire with a deck of cards, he looked quite amazed and told me he had no idea you could do that with a real deck of cards. He played to game all the time on his computer.

I did pretty well today, considering it was a travel day. I managed to sit at the table in the meeting with these really nice pastries in front of me for a couple of hours without taking a single bite. I can't say it was easy, but I did it. Lunch was brought in, we had a variety of sandwiches, I choose a falafel on pita bread. It was really good, but probably more calories than I realized when I choose it. Kind of hard to figure out the calories after the fact, on line I found a range of 375 to 750, my WAG is on the higher end of that.

I did not get a real dinner, but the falafel sandwich kept me kind of full and I was able to get a banana and eat the jerky snacks I took along (thanks Cate), so I ate better than last trip. I think the calories worked out pretty well.

Wednesday

breakfast
oatmeal with a few raisins 250

lunch
falafel sandwich on pita bread 600

snacks whilst traveling
banana 100
jerky 120
