Alligatorob's Diary

Sounds like you had a very productive weekend Rob . Did you realise when you moved to that house it would have so much work attached to it , water problems aside ?
Funny pic .

I've gome racing through several days'worth of posts, Rob, to find the latest on the leak, and it seems it's all fixed - and that you continue triumphant! Great news, on both counts! :hurray:

It was a good day, I ate well, exercised, and feel good tonight!

Got some news, my gym is reopening with some new restrictions but they will be open. The big thing is no more classes and no trainers, can't keep the personal distancing thing with that. Also no showers and everyone will be screened on entry and numbers limited. Time is limited to no more than 60 min. I guess this is a good thing, but I was just beginning to feel like I had worked out exercise routines without the gym. We'll see where it goes. I do plan to keep exercising one way or another. The gym and trainer were good for getting me started, I just don't know if I need them anymore.
You're being so efficient!
Thanks, and thanks to Cate as well, but the efficiency is probably exaggerated a bit in my telling of it. Feels good to be done though.
Great work on getting all that done!! Must feel good to have the majority of work over with.
Thanks Liza, it does!
Did you realize when you moved to that house it would have so much work attached to it , water problems aside ?
Yeah, kind of, this is not my first high maintenance house. The Florida house we lived in was right on the beach, the Gulf of Mexico, also an old house. Between the salt spray rust, termites, mold, and rot it took a lot of maintenance. And we had a bad hurricane, that was actually worse than the waterline, but kind of in a different category. The truth is I kind of like a project, even if I complain about it.
What has your exercise routine been in quarantine?
I have kind of worked out a mix, trying to do a lot of walking, a kind of makeshift exercise routine I worked out on my own to try and duplicate some of the weight training type things, and a nice video thing. I am actually exercising more than prequarantine.

Thanks Amy! Good to see you back. The leak thing is mostly fixed, no more leak or big holes in the yard but some repairs remain, lower priority. Continuing triumphant huh, kind of sounds like a Roman Emperor thing to me. Not sure I am quite that, lol.

Kilkenny Castle was completed in the year 1213. It appears a very nice place, and is open to the public. One of my few ancestors I know much about emigrated from Kilkenny County, Ireland to Florida in about 1855. Doubt he had much to do with the castle, but I do at least recognize the name. The same ancestor enlisted in the Confederate Army, in the US Civil War, and was in Pickett's charge at Gettysburg - ordered by Robert E Lee to take the ridge. The charge failed and was a turning point in the war, called the "High Water Mark of the Confederacy". He was one of the very few who made it up the hill alive, was captured and spent the rest of the war in a Yankee prison camp. Pickett's charge was probably the single most infamous attack of the war, whenever I need to establish my southern creds it makes a great story to haul out. He was my great great grandfather, William Daly Burtchaell. There is a good write up in WikiTree about him, it includes a photo, his beard was much longer than mine. Rob I have been to Kilkenny Castle . It's very pretty with nice grounds. There are some beautiful rooms with big tapestrys on the walls. Must add it to my to do list to revisit when all this virus is gone.

That´s an impressive beard! Good for him to survive the battle but I´ll admit I´m quite glad his side lost the war...

That was an extremely neat seque from Kilkenny Castle in 1213 to (how did we get here? o_O) Pickett's Charge in 1863 - talk about time travel! :D

Okay, not "continuing triumphant", if it makes you feel like one of those very unadmirable Roman emperors - say "continuing cheerful" instead! :)

I love how you have Shredded Wheat on there as a cereal - I used to work on that brand here in Canada. Good times.

I knew there was some Irish in you Rob! What an impressive ancestor you have.

As for the gym reopening - why don't I live in Utah?

It was a good day, ate well, exercised and I feel good. Did a workout this morning and walked 7 km this afternoon.

I think I will try to see how far I can get up the mountain Saturday. Its been a couple of weeks since I tried, the waterline intervened, but in the meantime I have been walking and feeling better about it. I have also been studying my options and think I have a new route to try. We'll see.
That's good about the gym--i'm pretty surprised they're already loosening restrictions!
Not really much of a loosening, we are not under a general lock down here but the governor did say that he thought gyms should shutdown so the health department did it. Apparently the gyms have convinced the health department that with enough precautions they can safely open. Maybe this is how it all ends, slowly one step at a time, or maybe its just a one of, who knows.

It does look like a great place to visit, and I love seeing old castles and the like. It is on my bucket list to see, but my bucket list is kind of long and right now I am not making much progress on it.

When I get to Kilkenny Castle I may have to explain it to them, may be something they have missed!

It can be hard for me to say, but I agree, I am glad we lost the war. I grew up in the US South steeped in Confederate lore. I heard his story and the stories of other of my Confederate ancestors many, many times, they were always told as great heroes of the sacred lost cause. Fighting against Yankee aggression. Hard not to still feel an occasional pang of pride in them. On the other hand I know now that the primary reason for the war was slavery, and my ancestors were fighting to preserve it. I believe its long past time we accept that and try to fix the ongoing damages done by it all. Oh well, not much I can do about it, except not fly the Confederate flag or the like, or approve of people who do (too many of my friends and relatives).

Yes Shredded Wheat and Weetabix are my favorite cerals, but now I am eating more of the protein Special K to get more protein.
What an impressive ancestor you have.
I think so too, he immigrated from Ireland to Florida at the age of 21, got married and within a few years the Civil War broke out, something he probably did not understand. He enlisted in the Confederate Army at the age of about 26, a young Irishman amongst rednecks and crackers. According to the bio he was not a slave owner. However I know his wife's family, the Williams were, so he knew about, and probably benefited from it. His sister-in-law Sarah Pamela Williams (my great great aunt) wrote about her plantation life and the slaves. Her story has been recently reprinted in
Cracker Times and Pioneer Lives: The Florida Reminiscences of George Gillett Keen and Sarah Pamela Williams (Robot Check) so I know a little about her, and I did grow up hearing stories about Aunt Pam. Southerners are big on oral history.

It was in 1233 that Tozcuecuextli became the military leader (Cuauhtlatoani) of the Aztecs. This was before the Aztec's got to the Valley of Mexico and became the most powerful group in Mesoamerica. Little is known about Tozcuecuextli, by me anyway.

That's great that the walking is coming along so nicely Rob. Since walking is one of my most favorite things to do, especially in lovely natural areas, i get very happy about another person discovering and enjoying it so much! You've really taken this on big time--wasn't it just a short time ago when you said you weren't able to walk due to foot pain...or was that someone else i am thinking of?

The Aztecs always have the greatest names :D I'm looking forward to your next mountaineering story but be careful.

Down 3 lbs to 198! Officially out of the 200s, I am happy!
wasn't it just a short time ago when you said you weren't able to walk due to foot pain...or was that someone else i am thinking of?
Yeah, that was me. I really did think my knees and feet would keep me from ever being able to walk a lot. That is part of the reason I started exercising on the bike, something I thought I could do. My knees and feet are still not perfect, but the combination of losing weight and exercising to strengthen has made a world of difference.
I'm looking forward to your next mountaineering story but be careful.
This one should be safer, not going to try the waterfall canyon, and I am getting better at understanding what I can and can't do. I agree on the Aztec names, hard to pronounce though.

Welcome to onederland, Rob. You have done & still are doing a wonderful job. Congratulations for being so determined!

It was a good day, ate well, exercised, and I feel pretty good. I only got a relatively short walk in, our weather was terrible, cold, windy and raining, not great for walking.

Thanks LaMa, Nick, Liza, and Cate, it feels really good to be out of the 200s. I got all the way through the 200s here with y'all's support, I really appreciate that.

Could not find anything interesting that happened in 1203, but I stumbled across the Boy Scout joke 1203, could be worse.

Two grave robbers decided to rob a grave, that's what they do. They find a pretty nice grave and start digging.
After they dug up the topsoil they found a hole and in the hole there was a man with wild white hair sitting in front of a piano. The man would play a couple notes then erase something on a piece of music.

The two men, amazed beyond belief, yelled down to the man, 'Who are you, and what are you doing?' The man looked up and said...

'IM BACH, AND IM DECOMPOSING'
