Alligatorob's Diary

That joke is so badly written but I like the pun.

Rob I'm late to the game but huge congratulations on the 198 .feels like you romped to this point .

Good story earlier about your ancestors too .

I'm super amazed at all the walking you manage. It's so good to see

I know what you mean about the gym - apart from the fact that strength is a bit tricky, then I am almost sold on moving onto sticking at home full-time. Joining in on the congrats on being in the 100s :)

...rednecks and crackers...
Ouch! way to denigrate a whole demographic. :( I particularly react against "redneck" since it is specifically made to stir up contempt for rural crop labourers, i.e. sneering at people for having to work outside in the sun, where their necks get red.

****

Big congratulations on making it to the 100s! And I like Boy Scout joke 1203. :D

It was a good day, I ate well, exercised and feel good. Got in a 5 km walk despite bad weather, it snowed on me for a while, but it felt good. Not walking tomorrow, I am saving it for my planned assault on the mountain Saturday, lol.
good joke Rob--thanks for the laugh
Not bad for a boy scout joke, I kind of liked it too.
That joke is so badly written but I like the pun.
I agree, it is poorly written. I have actually heard better versions of it before, just copied this one.
I'm super amazed at all the walking you manage.
Not really much different from what you are doing Petal, walking when I can. You have been walking a lot longer than I.
198 buddy. Superb.
Thanks Em, I do feel "Superb" about it. A big deal for me.
I know what you mean about the gym - apart from the fact that strength is a bit tricky, then I am almost sold on moving onto sticking at home full-time.
Yeah, its a hard decision, they reopened yesterday and I have not been there since. I have till the end of the month to cancel without charges, will give it some thought.

Being both a redneck and a cracker I feel I have a bit more leeway to use the terms than most. I don't really think of either as necessarily derogatory terms. In the US south rednecks are as you say white people who work outdoors clothed so only the neck turns red. Farmers mostly, but any outdoor worker. Many of my relatives and ancestors are and were rednecks, and my family and I have always considered ourselves rednecks, even though I worked indoors most of my career. Cracker means about the same thing, but is usually only applied to people from Georgia and Florida. So for a long time I was a Florida Cracker.

I did not intend to offend anyone. I know both terms have come to have derogatory meanings to some people, but not me.

Possibly unpleasant question: have you thought about when you'll add in the next 100 kcal/day? It looks like you're still losing weight at admirable speed and major milestones tend to be good times to think about strategy.

It was a good day, I ate well, exercised, and feel good. Actually exercised a bit less than most days, saving my strength for an assault on my challenge mountain in the morning.

From my house to the peak of where I one day want to get its an elevation rise of about 3,800 ft (1,200 m). The highest I have gotten so far is about 800 ft (250 m). I hope to do better than that, I am thinking something around 1,300 ft (400 m), about 1/3 of the total climb, would be a good target, but I will get what I can, and still feel safe. There is still a lot of snow on top, so even if I had the strength to do it all now, which I don't, its not possible. The straight line distance to the top is only about 4 km, so not far, its the climbing that will be the challenge. Also there are not really trails on much of the walk, so some bushwhacking will have to happen. All of my previous attempts have ended in dead ends, too steep or vegetated to go on. I have been studying a possible route, one I saw on my last highest. Looking at it from the valley and on Google Earth I think it's doable. And may lead to a route to the top one day. I know this ain't like planning an assault on the North Ridge of K2 or anything, but it's my challenge.
Nice work on getting your walk in despite the not great weather.
Thanks Lisa, I am trying to get out and do at least one walk no matter the weather. My usual route is to do a quick climb of about 100 m and then zig zag down depending on time and weather. I didn't walk today, saving my legs for tomorrow morning.

Good question LaMa, and I have been thinking about it. I still have the big 191 lbs milestone, the one that puts me into a non-obese BMI, that may be a time to rethink things. I am actually surprised that my weight loss has continued as rapidly as it has despite upping my calories a bit a few weeks ago. I have also increased exercising, maybe that's the reason.
looks like you have been progressing well
Thanks Trusylver, I feel like I have, in fact I am feeling pretty good all around these days.
The weather is very odd Rob . Hope the snow is not affecting your blossoms
Not too odd for Utah, in spring it often goes from hot to snow and back. The elevation at our house is about 4,400 ft (1,300 m) and the mountains to the immediate east rise much higher, makes our climate a bit unpredictable. I am a bit worried about the peaches, last night the temperature went a few degrees below freezing, not a good thing when the blossoms are on the trees. I think we are ok, but will have to wait a few days to know.

In 1289 the first know successful climb of Popocatépetl was recorded by members of the Tecuanipas tribe. A much more impressive climb that what I am attempting tomorrow. At 5,453 m (17,890 ft) Popocatépetl is the second highest peak in Mexico. It sits west of Mexico City closer to Puebla, and is visible for great distances. I have seen it several times, a very impressive semi-active volcano, snow capped despite being in the tropics. I have seen steam rising from it.

If you were planning to climb K2 right now I´m pretty sure your wife would have you committed, and rightly so. It´s good to hear your planning and preparing yourself, no matter what the challenge is. Also: 191 lbs sounds like a good milestone to add another 100-200 kcal/day.

rob good luck on your climbing challenge . Please remember to bring a walking stick and snacks and so not attempt anything you don't feel is safe.
Looking forward to hearing about it .
Lovely pic of the mountain in Mexico .

Rob- totally off-topic. I'm currently watching The Last Waltz by The Band & wondered if you also loved it. I think I have seen it 10 or more times & think music doesn't get much better!

Congrats on getting under 200, Rob. That's quite a milestone!

What a beautiful view of the peachtrees and the mountains.

For me personally, I wouldn't go back to the gym, especially since you've figured out a good routine on your own. While I understand the need to re-open, speaking for myself, I wouldn't take any unnecessary risks. Have to keep that attack vector to a minimum.

Nice work on the walk--a great beginning toward your end goal! How long did that take? I'm impressed with how you really stick to your goals Rob!

It was a good day, I feel real good about my hike, chuffed as some of y'all would say. Learned that word here, I kind of like it. I also ate well and feel good. I looked up the Eiffel Tower, it is 300 m to the upper level and 324 m to the peak. So I climbed the equivalent of more than 1 1/2 Eiffel Towers, a unit of measure I can relate to!

Some pictures along the way, first a view back to my house (in white circle) from a resting point along the way.

The mountain that remains untamed, note I got above some of the lower snowfields.

A wildflower along the way, not a great picture, I thought I'd see a better one, but this turned out to be the only Indian Paintbrush I saw. Got a few more flower pictures, may post them when I figure out what they are. Wildflowers are just beginning to bloom here, we don't get a whole lot, only a brief time in late April and May when its warm enough and there is still some moisture in the ground.

I was better prepared today, and though I am tired, no leg pains or anything. I am amazed how much easier this was than my first attempts, I have better equipment (boots and poles), better strength, probably better form, and weigh a little less. And I am thinking about what comes next, 191 might be a good turning point, or maybe my 1 year anniversary, May 15.
Please remember to bring a walking stick and snacks and so not attempt anything you don't feel is safe.
Thanks Petal, I did take 2 walking stick, water and did not do anything that appeared unsafe. Though I can more safely do down steep hills than I could have a few weeks ago. Forgot a snack, that was probably a mistake, got pretty hungry before getting home, won't do that again.

I had not seen it, missed it somehow. I am watching it now as I post, will report back. Thanks for pointing it out to me!
No, I am yet to find anyone who has climbed it, or tried. However today I met a young couple headed up the same hill. The first evidence of any other hikers I have seen. They were looking for shed elk antlers, the bull elk shed their antlers in the higher areas. Elk antlers have value, people apparently grind them up and use as aphrodisiac. It was the first time they had tried the hill as well, and knew less about than I did.
Congrats on getting under 200, Rob. That's quite a milestone!

Thanks Jack, I agree, for me it is a real milestone. I feel pretty good about it. Glad you liked the peach blossoms on the mountain, one of my favorite times here. Still thinking about the gym, I did like it, but can probably do without, and as you say that would be safer.

1222 was the year the University of Padua was established, the second oldest university in Italy and the 5th oldest in the world. One of my regrets is that I never studied outside of the US, would have loved to spend some time at Padua. Even if the football team doesn't compare to LSU!

And Cate, I am really liking The Waltz, I can see why you do!
