Advice on Workout Plan

Iam 25 5/8 150lbs, have been working out on the elliptical 3-4 times a week for about 40 min for the past year, started running about 2 months ago. I'm trying to add weights to my workout b/c I have not got the results I want from pure cardio. I am a part of a run group, we run for 1hr including drills, warm up and cool down, avg 2 miles working on gettin it higher then we have core group one day that is 1hr of pushups, crunches, jumping jacks, lots of stuff! I'm wanting to tone my body, mostly my stomach area, I am apple shaped so I have nice legs but have a "tire" around my stomach :( Its ok to run and lift weights on the same day right? Also is alternating b/w different preset programs on the elliptical enough variety to keep my body from getting used to it and burning less fat or do I need to be adding the bike or something? I'm a maid a few days a week also :) Any advice appreciated ...

Mon - Morning Run, Afterwork Upper body weights
Tues - Lunch Elliptical, Afterwork Clean House
Wed - Morning Core, Afterwork Lower body weights
Thurs- Morning Run, Afterwork Clean
Fri - Lunch Elliptical
Sat or Sun - Morning Run

Hi Kb ... Personally I think doing two full body workouts a week would be more beneficial for you, rather than one day upper and one day lower. Running and lifting on the same day is okay, just lift weights first, or as you have it now, run in the morning and lift after work, I think is ok. Also, even more important than exercise in toning your body, is your diet. Do you feel your diet is in check ?? How is your water intake ?? You seem quite active,
so I am thinking it may be your diet holding you back. JMO, of course. :)

I'd also rather you do a full body routine and add an extra day in there (maybe Saturdays). I'd also vary your cardio routine and intensity.

As jpc1058 said... menu is very important.

Ok so yall think i should do full body m w and S? that would actually be easier to me than just going to the gym for arms or legs. yes thx my run group is in the morning so i would only lift weights after works :) Well my diet is decent ... i eat 5 meals a day ... just havnet mastered the protein part .... my diet before was horrible so i would think bw cleaning out the junk and working out for the first time that i woulda got some results .. .and i have, lost inches from my back and chest .. just not enuf :) i want rid of the flab!!! Lifting weight would do that no? this is what i eat ... i know trainer lynn will bash it b/c i ve posted it before ... i just havent mastered eating things simple for me ... i dont reallly have a kitchen to cook in :(

breakfast ... yogurt 160 cal
snack ... oatmeal (no sugar) add raisins 200 cal
lunch ... turkey sandwich or grilled chicken salad or 200 cal lean cusine
snack ... fresh fruit medley (watermelon, strawberry, canteloupe, pineapple, etc)
dinner .... lean cusine on occassion or grilled chicken veggies ...

buuuut i cheat on the weekends, not fast food, just not 5 meals ... normally 3 .... and i drink beer on fri and sat ... i know :( there has to be a happy medium ... i have to be able to get most my results and still enjoy drinking fri and sat night ... i refuse to believe i cant do both! im not looking for 10% body fat just a lack of love handles and hugely jiggly tummy! :)

I know its different for everyone but, you shouldn't beat yourself up over this. I cheat every Saturday (nice meal and some beers) - partly because I think its good to keep my metabolism on its toes (always great justification ;) ) and, partly for my own sanity!! I am usually very disciplined during the week so, Saturdays are my reward to myself. Sure, I could make slightly faster progress if I didn't do this but, for me, its important to have a social existence that I'm happy with and to reward myself each week - keeps me focused in the week. Sounds like you're getting everything else in place so, enjoy your beers, just don't overdo it :D

Kb, yes you need to jack up your protein intake. Eggs, cottage cheese, fish, lean meats, natural peanut butter, soybeans, to name some sources. I know Lynn loves the soybeans :) . Anyway, if you can add some of those to your diet it would help boost your protein intake.

Ohh trainer lynn i didnt mean you upset me!! I appreciate your advice and love how much you help eveyone on this board, you always have good advice! Im moving in a month and will have a nicer place with a nicer kitchen so I can start cooking more and then be able to eat more protein and a better diet. Now if they would juuust make 0 calorie beer that tastes good :)

Trainer Lynn doesn't really bash!! :) That's what I like about her, she'll give you her opinion and she seems to know her stuff ;)
