Weekend Crashes...!?!

Question of the Week:
So we all work out during the week, and even on the weekends right? Now my job is nothing really difficult or exhausting. Mentally it can be tiring, but not physically. On the weekends I try to keep my work-outs up too, I even hit the gym early Saturday morning. So why is it, I am crashing on the weekends?? I mean, I am down right exhausted!! I don't normally ever take naps during the day, but on Saturday and Sunday it seems I have to!! I can barely stay awake. This has happened the last few weeks. Sid says he thinks its because the weekend is the only time I "slow down" but in all honestly.. we still do stuff ont he weekends.. Im still working out right.

I'm just curious..does anyone else have this happen to them too?? Its just funny to me.. I feel like such a wimp, but by late morning/early afternoon I'm on our living room couch napping for a couple hours.

I haven't exactly been able to work out lately, but I do feel like not doing anything for school on the weekends. I am in class all week (or most of the time anyway) and having to read and do assignments at night. I usually tell myself that I will have the whole weekend that I can get reading done ahead of time but then I usually just want to sit around and not do it. I kind of think it is because most people don't have down time during the week, so they really need it on weekends. At least you are still exercising though! :D

Waahh. Ok.. now I am such a big whiny baby.. I'm so sorry you guys. :( but now my back pain is there but lessened and its moving into my hip flexors! Whaaat is going on with my body lately?!! AGH! :) Maybe FH was right about skipping the exercise but I just can't bare the thought of missing out on all that cardio and possible weight-loss. I've got two weeks until my shower and I really hope to drop these last 3-4lbs to get into 140's!! :(

Hey Girl! Whine all you what to. We will always listen. And I don't want to be the only one whining! When are you going to the doctor? As much as you hate to hear it, you may need to take a couple of days off from exercising. You don't want that to get worse and be in a lot of pain during your shower, and certainly not during your wedding and honeymoon!

Good Morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry to hear that you're having more back pain:( Try to have a good day and don't ge5t discourged on us;)

Hi, NL,

Sometimes your body does need rest. Overtaxing yourself with exercise is not good, because its supposed to make you feel good and not bad. If you hurt yourself, you will miss out on a lot of fun coming your way, so listen to your body, and be very careful! I don't want to lecture, but just had many bad experiences like that. It sounds like you exercised really hard this am, so maybe you should ease up and not do anything streneous. Choose exercises that will get your heart pumping without big back strain. Too high setting on stationary bike can mess you up, if your back is already weak. Its better to pedal faster on a lower resistance rather then slower and on higher resistance to prevent muscle strain. For strength workout, I would skip lower body, and do some crunches and upper body workout to let your back rest and recover.

As per crashing on the weekend, I think mentally taxing work can affect you physically. Also not getting enough sleep during the week may make you need more rest on weekends. I don't know about you, but personally I'm more active on weekends, and I get more physically tired on weekends, but during the week my fatigue is both mental and physical.

Be careful and take care, hope you feel better!

NTL: hey there! No no lecture girl. :) You brought up some very good points, which I wll mull over all day today at work because.. I had brought my gym bag to go to the gym again tonight. Lol.. i have a feeling you'll be shaking your head at me as you read this!! :) Thanks!!

Ok,since it is Girl Scout cookie season, and you are all posting your cookie woes, I had to post this funny story of my own!

Last night I went to the grocery store to pick up a few items for dinner and the rest of this week (ran out of eggs..imagine that!) So our grocery store Food Lion has two entrances/exits. I went in the building on the left, got my groceries and headed out. When leaving, I went (for no particular reason) to go out the left right entrance/exit. Well the minute I started out I noticed Girl Scouts at that entranc eselling cookies!!! I immediately turned around, had to excuse myself from a woman who was trying to exit behind me, so I could exit out the other door!! The woman looked at me oddly, because I am sure it was painfully obvious that I was avoiding those Girl Scouts and their evil calorie packed cookies!! Truly.. I wasn't running from the Girl Scouts, just uhm their calories!! :D

LOL that's a great story Dana :D Sometimes you just gotta know when to turn around and run away from the temptations rather than trying to suffer through them :p

Have a great day, and stay away from the Girl Scouts!

That is so funny! But I know what ya mean. I used to avoid them too. Now my daughter is one, so I can't exactly run from her!

That's a really funny story about Girl Scout Cookies. I can just imagine you running away with your grocery cart. I LOVE those cookies too! I would not be able to turn around, so kudos to you! :)

As for gym tonight - if you listen to your body, I am sure you will make the right choice whether to exercise or not, and how hard to go and what exercises to do, etc.
I can relate a bit, as with all this riding i've done over the weekend, my lower back is complaining today. I did some ice earlier, and will probably do some light aerobic exercise later this evening, and rest.

Yo, D! I think you need a break and I'm the one  shaking my head at you right now. I personally think (i am no doctor) that your body is trying to tell you something. If your back is bothering you, it is from other muscles not as strong. For example, your abs would be weaker and it tightens your back to compensate, which in turn leads to your hip flexors. Also if you hip flexors are tight (which it sounds like), that can lead to alot of lower back pain from the 'pull' of muscles. I think you said you go to the doc on wednesday. But, as of now, I think you need a rest. Maybe some walking but truthfully probably NO BIKE (it strengthens your hamstrings & hip flexors and i think pulls on your back) and the treadmillls' pounding could be re-aggravating a small injury that you have THAT YOU DONT WANT TO GET WORSE!! For multiple reasons. I think you need some MAJOR stretching, possibly a massage and a break to recharge your body b/c you have been working so hard. The last thing you need is to exacerbate an injury and be off exercise for a week versus a couple days! Think low-impact, maybe focus on upper body strength exercises, ab work, and STRETCHING - possibly some yoga or light walking and see if it makes a difference. Sounds like you need to "test" your body on what it wants right now. I think the biggest mistakes people make are NOT LISTENING to their own body (i've done the same) and the damage is just worse in the end....these things you cant just work right through them...maybe take a break but STRETCH alot until you see your doc and see what they say from there? food for thought...

 Uh oh!!! Ok.. ok.. NTL and Skyler, you've beaten it into me. :D Hehe. No seriously Thank you girls!! I need to listen to you and you are both VERY right in the points you make. :) SO here's the decision I'm making.. hopefully you two will be proud of me!! ;)

I am going to either, go to a yoga/pilates class tonight if one si being offered, to help get me stretching etc. If a class isn't offered I'm going to do my VHS tape at home! :) It will probably be the latter and some heavy duty stretching.

I know the back hamstring muscles of my legs are "tight", as many people have told me. And with exercising cardo machines it only tightens them further! So I will try and take it easy for the next few days. Plus.. .sitting here with the pain shooting in my hip joints is just another reminder to take it easy. :) Just means I have to be careful with my food too. I may keep up some slow walking, just to make sure I can keep up some sort of burning of the calories, but n othing like my hill intervals. :)

Whatta ya guys think as far as the ellipitical goes? I def won't be hitting the bike anytime soon again! ;) I'm learning..seee..see I do listen to you guys!! :D

you are too funny!!!! the elliptical is less of an impactive exercise (no pounding or anything) & supposed to be better for joints but considering you are in PAIN right now, i'd say take it easy for a couple days like you said above...and then possibly when you get back into cardio mode, try elliptical and see how you feel - maybe not crazy intervals or hills right away. Ask your doctor, but that would seem to make sense. You may end up having to do trial and error - do elliptical, front & backwards, and see how you feel that day....another day, try something else..etc...and keep a log and see how you feel during the day post-exercise. BUT, once you recover, you better make time to stretch or i'm gonna come down there and get ya!! :D

Hey girl, I'm finally getting a chance to check in on your diary... Sorry I haven't been very supportive lately. :(
I hope you figure out what's wrong with your back soon.
And about the Girl Scouts- if any of them saw you running, you may have permanently traumatized them. I remember when my brother was little and he went out to get an ice cream off the truck. As he got closer, the truck sped up and drove away! When I think back on it now, I think that's about the same time his grades dropped, his dreams of becoming a lawyer were no more and he grew up to become a dishwasher for a local diner. He's never been the same... Just think, you may have done that to an inocent little Girl Scout! LOL! Just messin' with ya!;)

Too funny abt. the G/S cookies! I'm telling you, watching your diet is more abt. what you're tempted to eat and don't eat than what you actually do eat! Good job. My niece has been trying to deliver our cookies for a week now and I just haven't made it easy - lol!! I haven't made it difficult, but I have'nt exactly offered to go pick them up, you know?

Go Fat Busters!!!!

NL, it sounds like you need to take it easy for next few days. Some light walking and stretching. Take care of your self. This body is the only one you get, and that's it. I hope you feel better soon. If you watch your calories, you'll be ok.
Here's what I've learned: if something hurts, there is an injury already in place. You can either make it worse by keeping going, or you can let it rest and let yourself heal. If during exercise something bothers you, you're aggrevating that injury and making it worse. Sometimes very light exercise (like lite walking around a house outside) can help heal faster because it promotes circulation, but if walking hurts, that is too much and you need to let it rest.
Hope that helps. Don't worry, you'll be as good as new soon!
