A brand new start

Good morning! One o'clock in the morning and I have found my way to this website.

Today is definitely a new beginning. I want to loose weight. I currently weigh 205 (gulp). There. I said it. I can't believe it. Or rather, I wish I didn't believe it. I wish it weren't true. But it is and now is the time to do something about it.

I actually made the choice Christmas night. I have had a day to weed through my "plan."

Diet: I will go back to using the diet that got me through my pregnancy with my second son. It was designed for those with gestational diabetes, but it really worked for me then and I'm hoping it will work now.

Hear me as I recite: 2 carbs (30 grams) for breakfast, 2 for snack, 4 for lunch, 2 for snack, 4 for dinner, and 2 for snack.

Exercise: If only I didn't have to... I will exercise 3 to 4 times a week. Either at home with an aerobics tape, or on a walk with my boys, or walking at the mall.

I'm going to work this in small goals. Right now my mini-goal is to loose 35 pounds by May 1. I think it is a reasonable, safe goal.

I also want to work on a "focus" rather than being overwhelmed by the whole shabang of calories, exercise, water, journaling, healthy choices, intake, etc. all at once. (Now, having said that, I will be jumping in with two feet here. I just want to have the success of managing a "focus.")

This week, as I get my "Dieting Ducks in a Row" I'm really going to focus on journaling and food intake. (Read: Start keeping a weight loss journal and Stop snacking like a madwoman!)

Well, it is almost 1:30 and I'm not snacking while sending in my first entry. The day holds a certain promise, doesn't it?!

It sure does!! Sounds like you've got a killer plan! Good luck with everything and keep us updated, we are here for you!!

You have the positive mindset and you all touching in on all the important basis to be successful. I remember when I started I kept it real simple as it can feel so overwhelming in the beginning,...as you need more you learn more or do more. It didnt come on in a day so you dont have to do it all in a day. Just keep the journal going even if you are having a bad day....that is actually when you need it most
Welsome and wishing you great success.

First day

Thanks for the welcome! It sure felt good to read two messages wishing me success.

So here I am. Overzealous beginner, eh? It hasn't even been 24 hours since my first post and I feel the need to make an entry.

Food:
Oatmeal with just a splash of milk
water

Didn't have a morning snack; I was at the grocery store.
Of course, when I returned from the store with all my new skinny food I couldn't resist two spoonfuls of Edy's Light Eggnog Ice Cream. I suppose I should be listing the two spoons as my snack.

Spinach & mushroom pizza, casa salad, diet coke with lime (my new favorite beverage), and half a slice of that log cake thing that makes Christmas Eve dinner special - left half of the icing and a quarter of my portion on the plate.

I feel good about:
I resisted in the kitchen! One of my biggest pitfalls is the kitchen. I plate and put away all the food and have fallen into the awful fattening habit of constantly tasting, nibbling and licking (not that I lick other people's food! You know what I mean, finger-licking). For instance, when I took out the dessert platter to give everyone a dessert I realized what a different day today is. Just a few days ago I would have popped in a cookie or two while getting out the treats, and then I would have had a full portion, followed by another "taste" while putting it away.

Plans for the rest of the day:
yogurt for snack
chicken quesidillas and veggies for dinner
some of that yummy ice cream for dessert (I'm thinking it said 1/2 cup for 1 carb)
We're taking the kids over to the Haven (subdivision across the street) for a walk. Hopefully it will be warm enough to use the wagon.

Well, I just told DH I would be in to watch the Gilligan's Island DVD. Gotta love when DH has a day off!

I'll check back in tonight and we'll see if my "plans" were any good!

Humor me...

Oh, humor me as I make a third entry for today!

Exercise
We didn't make it over to the Haven for our walk so while DH put the boys to bed I exercised with my Sweatin' to the Oldies video. (Does anyone even remember Richard Simmons?) I like that tape because it is short (30 minutes) and since I've done it before I can keep up and not feel like I am kicking midgets or writhing like an electrified chicken in shock therapy.

Plus, I have memories of doing this tape with a bunch of girls I went to church with when I lived in Ohio. Somehow a little more fun when a group of you sweats together. (Hey, that's why I signed up here! :))

Food
No afternoon snack. (I was too busy taking a much needed nap. Eveybody took a nap this afternoon.)

Dinner was a chicken quesidilla (chicken, cheese and salsa) and water.
And, yes, Virginia, the eggnog icecream (1/2 cup) was delicious.

Now I am off to the shower and then hubby and I are watching the Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again with a few margaritas. Ciao.

sounds like your doing really well! dont' kick yourself for the 2 scoops of ice cream, at least you didn't have a bowl of it! I remember richard simmons! I LOVED his work out tapes!! What part of Ohio were you from?? I live in Ohio. Good job with the diet, keep it up!!

Thanks for the note, Newbride. It really makes me happy to see messages. (And I like the encouragement.)

For two years my hubby and I lived in Bowling Green, Ohio. Very nice, small, college town. Our first son was born there.

Where in Ohio do you live?

So far I've been awake for 30 minutes and I haven't even wondered into the kitchen. Of course, I haven't dressed all the children yet, so you can figure I'll be in the kitchen soon. :) I'm not sure why they are so hellbent on eating EVERY day. ;)

Food
Special K breakfast bar (cranberry and apple)

nothing for snack because I was in my new classroom arranging stuff.
(I'm back to teaching! 3 year old preschool Mondays and Tuesdays.) And I needed the snack. By the time I came home at noon I was pretty hungry (guess those little bars don't pack much of a punch) and it was hard not to "snack" while making lunch.

Casa salad with grilled chicken breast- no croutons
(Casa salad is my favorite salad of the moment. It is from a restaurant in Indiana where we lived for the three years. It is romaine and iceberg lettuce, red pepper, green onions, Italian cheese blend, croutons, and Casa dressing. I mix up the dressing in a huge batch and just keep it in the fridge. And when I want a casa salad... tada.)
mini cherry yogurt
2 Ritz crackers (stolen from the package while assembling the boys' lunches- tsk, tsk.)
diet coke with lime
mini package of mini M&M's (What can I say? Santa put them in my stocking! But I read the back and didn't feel they were too guilty of a choice- they are 10 grams of carbs, 4 grams of fat, and less than 80 calories.)

Need to drink more water...

Exercise

How will I fit exercise into the day???

I was going to meet DH with the kidlets for a walk, but Dad is coming to take the boys Christmas shopping (and David birthday shopping- can't believe he's going to be three) and I doubt we will make it back for a walk. And I don't think Dad wants to go walking without the aid of a cane or wheelchair.

Perhaps I will go right now (can you hear the boys snoring?) and do my Richard Simmons tape. That way I will have my exercising over for the day and I can enjoy some time with Dad rather than feeling guilty about the missed walk.

Of course, I was going to do some housework... But, it has been my experience that housework waits. Of course, so do 100 extra pounds, but today I'd rather work on my butt then my laundry!

and two... and three... and four...

OMG! I can't believe you used to live in BG...so did I!! I loved it there!! I live outside of findlay now, but i still visit friends in BG from time to time! Just a note...as far as excersize is concered housework can count, providing your really moving! I've just started this new thing...if I'm watching a show I LOVE..i jump up on commercials and walk up and down the stairs the whole course of the commercials. Theres lots of ways to add extra "steps' in your day! Example..park far away from the store and walk up to the door, not park real close to it.

Make as many entries as you need to if it keeps you focused and motivated....BTW you are doing awesome.....three cheers for you!!!
Hip hip horray X 3 :)

I agree with jennifer, when I started on the forum, I was posting 3-4 times a day to keep me focused, and still do every now and then. Anyways, I love reading your posts, you've got a great sense of humour.

Good Evening!
Thanks Newbride, Jennifer, and Jennylee for all your encouraging messages. :) I think you are right, once I really get on a roll I will "cut down" on my posts. That, and once I go to work next week, I won't have time to log on. :p (Of course, I do have a computer in my classroom and I am only working two days a week...)

Okay, it is 10:15 and I am exhausted. I made a turkey dinner (just wanted turkey) and, boy, was that a lot of work. I find it so hard to make a meal that requires a gazillion pans and the talent to keep all the plates spinning (or the pots hot) at the same time. Tomorrow night- CASSERROLE.

And if it isn't bad enough that I'm tired from the kitchen workout, I also have flour and water "paste" on my clothes and in my hair. I was making gravy (lower fat, of course) and I had the flour and water in a small container so I could shake the lumps out of it before adding it to the stock. Well, I must have been using my new muscles because the lid came off and a very large squirt of the paste flew all over me. Yuck.

Food

5 mini pretzels with M&M's stuck to them (I think the "glue" is that candy coating stuff. I'm not sure, one of the church members made them for us. The kids sure loved them.)
water

turkey breast
stuffing
mashed potatoes
broccolli and cheese sauce
cranberry sauce (love that! Incidentally, so do the boys!)
diet pepsi

some of that chocolate pudding dessert thing I made for Christmas dinner dessert (It was a smallish slice and I ate the crust and the pudding layer and left the rest. Just thinking... I could easily re-make this as a "light" dessert. Is there a board for recipes?)

Exercise
Richard and I worked out again today. (Where does he get those little, silky shorts, anyway?)

I also walked Target with my Dad and three small boys looking for Christmas presents.

And if I'm counting housework that gets the heart rate going, I'm going to count tonight's kitchen clean-up. Lordy, what a mess!

I'm off to the showers and then an early bedtime. Of course, maybe if I hurry I can fit in a chapter of the Lynn Austin book I am reading.

And the day was off...
I woke up this morning and went into David's room. He had just opened his eyes when I enthusiastically said, "Happy Birthday!!!" He smiled and said, just as enthusiastically, "I peed myself!" :D Welcome to the "Terrific Threes..."

Food
special birthday breakfast of egg, potatoes, ham, cheese and peppers
water
ham and cheese sandwich at school while planning my first week's of lessons (left a third of the fluffy, white bun)
5 vinegar and salt chips (only 5)
water
a McDonald's yogurt and fruit parfait- not bad tasting and a pretty good choice when I could have ordered a hot fudge sundae
a few bites of Sam's fudge sundae as I fed it to him
one large bite of David's fudge sundae because he was going to toss it and it still had a large glob of peanuts clinging to an even larger glob of fudge- what was he thinking?!
large salad with tomatoes, ham, cheese, hard boiled egg, and carb-free dressing
8 french fries (snuck- sneaked? from the pan while serving the children grilled cheese sandwiches and french fries for dinner)
diet coke with lime
no rootbeer float which was Davey's birthday dessert

A few thoughts about today's food...
I never get to the snacks!

I need to drink more water!

Jennifer, I read your journal yesterday and was it you who said that you could not afford to be the garbage disposal any longer? I can't put it any better. I have such a hard time not eating food that the children are going to "waste."

So, great, now I have two admitted "food traps-" eating food while being alone with it (preparing and cleaning up) and "rescuing" food that the children will throw away.

Would a picture of a garbage can or disposal help me to not eat what the children do not want. Or better yet, a whale photo with the slogan, "Save the whales, not leftovers!" (Sorry, I'm getting a little "punchy" here! )

On another angle,
After eating the salad for dinner I really wanted "something else." I'm not sure what it was that I wanted. I wasn't really hungry, but I was not ready to "close the kitchen" either. I know that even just a week ago I would have hit the candy/chocolate stash or had a cookie (or two or three) to satisfy whatever that was. Luckily, a friend was over and she said, "Get over it." I feel pretty proud of myself for not stuffing something/anything in my mouth. You think she'll move in? ;)

Exercise
No "formal" exercise today. We (me and five kids) did go to the park today to play on the equipment and to have our McDonald's treats. But I'd be lying if I said that was anywhere near a "workout."
I did have one interesting moment, however. I was laying on the toddler slide teasing Sam so that he could not get down. It occured to me that my hips touched the sides of the slide. Not tightly, but I could feel the slide. I'll know I've lost weight when I can't feel the sides of the slide!

SWOOSH, I'm on my way!

...as a friend so plainly pointed out to me...they (the kids) are leaving behind what they cant eat....so make smaller portions....if they want more,..give more.
So I give smaller protions,..and guess what...Yep, .....you got it!!!!
Sounds so darn simple,...duh!

You ever hear that Army slogan, We get more done by 6 am than most people get done all day? Some days I think they ain't got nothin' on a momma of small children!! Here it is 9:30 (we got up at 8) and I've fed three youngin's, dressed one of them, baked a cake, finished my paperwork to start my job on Monday, started a pork roast, washed and dried a batch of laundry, stripped a bed, changed towels. I'm getting tired just re-hashing!

Oh, and the to-do list still has... dress two more children, get showered and dressed, make potato salad and coleslaw, finish getting the goody bags ready, iron white shirts for David's cowboy birthday party, vacuum, clean the sink and straighten the bathroom, make the beds, take a friend to the airport, stash the clean laundry (becuase I am too much of a "realist" to even think that it will get folded today!), turn two sheet cakes into a double layer cowboy boot birthday cake, decorate for the party, shred the pork for bbq pork sandwiches, think up an excuse for not having made a peanut butter pie for hubby's birthday (which is actually today, but now that I think about it, since we are celebrating tomorrow I can make the pie for tomorrow), etc. Obviously, "world peace" will have to wait till tomorrow (or the day after that).

Food
Special K cranberry apple breakfast bar
slice of deli ham
lick of cake batter

Drink water!!!!!

Gotta run (and fold, decorate, shower, etc.)
Totallyscrappy

I totally agree. I have 4 kids and work full-time. I feel like I never have time and I'm always in a hurry to get something done. Well I guess that's life. Take a deep breath and enjoy.
