Don't try this at home

Sensible core work:
Overhead squats, normal squats, deadlifts etc. kettlebell/ dumbell swings, isolation like plank, hyperextensions, even crunches.
Various suspension trainer work, especially if you are able to get both sides working independantly.
Slackline walking, gymnastics, pilates, dance.
Focus on posture, basically regular deportment, holding yourself properly while sat and stood.

Stupid but none the less very effective:
All but the isolation from above standing on somthing mobile, like a bosu ball, either way up, or medicine ball.
Push ups with clap with feet on suspension trainer straps, various othe rmovements where the only thing staying out of mid air are dangling from moving straps.

I do a combination of sensible and stupid, but that is me in general.

I haven't done isolated stomach stuff in forever. Between my Front squats, Regular squats, Dead lifts, military presses and bent over rows, I feel it pretty well in my core.

I'd have to dispute the "stupid" characterization given how much I love BOSU and balance disk work, yet somedays, particularly after a vicious slap from the slackline, it makes me feel stupid for even trying!

Enjoy the gym visit (hope they have AC!!!!) and yes, I can well imagine that your son has a killer workout ethic.

Overhead squats are one of the only lifts I haven't tried that I've wanted to, along with vertical push-ups. I would probably have to spend a day in the gym just working on form.

Trick to learning OHSquat, in my experience, start with a broomstick handle or PVC pipe (or something like that), and learn from the bottom up -- ie squat down, then put the stick overhead, then come back up with it. Makes the whole movement a lot easier to pick up than starting with something overhead and squatting down, because in the latter method, you spend too much time worrying about balance on the way down, and never actually get to the bottom (or go down in a bad way). It seems that it's better to learn to be in the bottom position and come back up, having confidence that you can get a good bottom position, so that your inhibitions won't flare up so much and you'll be more comfortable just dropping down, than starting up top and trying to control your descent off the bat. Then, once you're comfortable dropping down into the bottom position, getting a good bottom position and coming up strong, you can start tidying up the mess between top and bottom, and then you can start using things heavier than a feather.

Dispute as you wish. The facts are in and only the truly committed do these movements, I am talking long sleeve cardigans and comfy wallpaper committed too. I love it too, but it's still crazy stuff to do, good to see I am not the only one not suffering with insanity but enjoying every moment of it.

Forgot to type about the weekend workouts.
Saturday was a bit of play time with VIPR's (kind of plastic log lift/ farmers walk things, but only up to 20kg), kettles, TRX and some platforms, then spa.
Son was training this day too and gave it welly, good stuff and he is enjoying it too more importantly.
Sunday was more focussed on setting up a circuit to give my wife some variety. She likes what she has been doing but wanted something to mix it up with.

They did have air con but I still looked as if I had melted.

"I don't expect I will feel any different than I do now. In the same way as after turning 30, which many made a big deal about. A lot of people are telling me they hated turning 40 but personally I don't see the issue.

I am immortal until proven otherwise!"

40 is no big deal, and I totally agree with your last sentiment. Happy Birthday!

Still not quite there yet, a few weeks of my thirties left, very few but I expect I'll make it. Changing sessions next week so would be nice if I get 100kg bench for or before my birthday. 8mph running would be nice too, but with current temps that is hopeful.
I got a funny look from putting a comment in the card of someone turning 30 recently 'We are now both in our thirties' fortunately they appreciated the humour.

Next sessions will be three warm up sets, reverse pyramid down so pushing heavy at my freshest while being safe. Exercises yet to be confirmed but three core movements will be there of course.
Due to change in timings I get to be able to train 4 days a week now without losing out on family time so thinking of doing a circuit at the end of the week to bring a bit of local muscular endurance into my life, either that or kill me, all good.

I've been thinking of changing over to a reverse pyramid in a few weeks as well. Really get some work out of those lighter sets.

If you have a few weeks and only 5kg to go I bet you can do it, and you should 'cuz, ya know, it's all down hill after 40!'

OK - that is just not the case, but you will of course hear it over and over again, particularly from people who allowed it to happen... I have about 8 weeks to go, but am already convinced that 50 won't be a big deal either.

I want the heavy stuff too, but a reverse pyramid will make me have to work harder by the time I get to the light stuff.

I like drop sets for that. There is somethign deeply disturbing about finishing with the bar feeing like you can barely move it.
Not easy to do those well on your own, but detrirmined to try.

My wife was being told by one of her colleagues that I would likely find it fine now but struggle when I really get older. She pointed out that I am as fit now as when she met me almost 15 years ago and unlikely to change regardless.
Looks like we both shift decades within a couple of weeks of each other, but we will both be in our forties before you get really old.
I love seeing the number of age related disorders that are being shown to be nothing to do with age and everything to do with how well you look after yourself, these are covering everythign from some causes of blindness to impotence, he says listening to a song called beat yourself blind, I do have such charming musical taste, just switched to superbeast, always been hairy, not sure about the super though.

Smarty-pants!

Advanced Glycation Endproducts, which so conveniently become AGEs - seem to be one of the major evil doers. Another reason to keep one's added sugar intake low. But then again, it might be that music... Dang, does this mean no birthday cake????

Cake good!

Didn't end up doing weights last night, which means doing them on two consecutive days of running, going to be fun.

Weather is hot with chances of heavy rain and stoms incresing as the day goes on by the time I am running likely to simply be hot, but cooler than last week, and quite humid from the recent rains. Running will be interesting with air at a premium, I hate having pathetic lungs.
