Is this good?

I have been really wanting to lose weight.... I started Taekwondo about a half a year ago. We do about 75-100 pushups and 100 various situps 3 nights of the week. I have started to run a mile like every other day now i just love to run and run almost everyday. I play paintball almost every saturday and i am starting to eat a lot healthier than i used to. I am wondering if this will help me lose weight and hopefully build muscle. I also do extra situps or pushups around my house if i am feeling lazy. I am also about 5'8" and weigh between 170-180(I think=).

any kind of activity is good for you, but if you really want to loose weight ( i.e. that's your goal) then you need to couple your exercise/activity with a healthy diet. it is the combination that will help you loose weight.

It is always a good thing to be active :)

cheers,
Diane

It sounds like you're on the right track.

You might not need to lose weight at all. Being 5 8 and about 170-180 sounds about right. Do you have any medical conditions or have a really high bf %? If so, try to improve those conditions on the doctor's advice.

Also were you saying you eventually want to start building muscle?

To do this youll need to construct a proper workout routine and lift heavy weights ;) Youll also need an increase in calories to do this :)

Also, you should note that you can't build muscles and lose weight at the same time. It doesn't make any sense, if you think about it.

You may lose weight tho, because you can build muscle and lose FAT at the same time, its possible ;)

I agree.

The distinction is that it's extremely difficult to build a ' significant ' amount of muscle and lose a ' significant ' amount of fat - both at the same time.

All the same, you can produce modest muscle mass gains while losing weight from fat at the same time.

There is a belief here that is sometimes all too apparent on these forums that if you are trying to lose weight you can't build muscle. You also don't have to lift "heavy weights" in order to see modest muscle mass gains. A muscular endurance training program over time will produce gains in muscle mass ideal to that lifting regiment. The key there is to work to exhaustion, which can be done independant of the amount of weight being lifted.

Granted you're not going to become a professional body builder anytime soon, but you will see results.

Very good point!

My nutritionist was telling me about some clinical study where they had a group of woman on just 800 calories per day AND they were doing some weight-training. Despite the obvious calorie deficit, the woman all responded with gains in lean muscle!

I don't know how long they were on this deficit or any of the details, but I could ask my nutritionist for the details if anyone is that interested. The bigger point is, it's just plain wrong to figure muscle-gain can't be achieved while dieting.

I myself have had several weeks go by where I've been dieting & weight-training...only to have my meeting/appt with the nutritionist to find that my body-fat% has gone down, yet my weight went up.....it could only be muscle gain to account for that, especially when my arms/legs are getting bigger.

Muscle gain while dieting; very do-able! :D

thanks everyone for the input! I just went to walmart today with my dad. I am 13... please dont say ur 13 dont worry about ur shape. I just dont like the shape im in. I have more muscle than kids my age. When i flex my abs i can feel them/ see a faint outline. My dad said that i only need to lose that extra fat i have. I picked up some food today at walmart. What do you all think of this diet? Every morning i will eat about a bowl of cereal and a carton of milk(from school). For lunch i will pack a cheese and turkey sandwhich on wheat, about 10-15 red grapes, 10-20 baby carrots,a bottle of water and for a snack during the day i will take an extra bottle of water and 5-10 medium sized strwberries. Every few days i will replace the grapes or strawberries with a bannana. I used to eat the same sandwhich, a bag of chips, and a soda. I felt so unhealthy eating it. And i will eat whatever homecooked meal my dad makes. He is from the middle East and the mediterranean diet, i heard was one of the healthiest out there. What do you think of this new diet? I will eat this all while doing the activities i listed earlier regularly. I dont want to build alot of muscle now, other than what we do in Taekwondo, but i am taking weightlifting next year.

Sounds like a good diet, just don't overdo it. You're still young and your body is going to need the calories and nutrients as you progress though puberty. You're still going to do a lot of developing.

Best of luck.

Sounds like a really healthy, balanced diet :)

And remember, you are 13 and your body is going to continue to change and grow as you get older. Enjoy this time in your life and do activities that you find fun! You'll be amazed how much of your good habits you'll carry into your adult life!

cheers!
Diane

No, I think the diet sounds good. Just don't starve yourself. If you are hungry eat, just eat healthy :)

cheers! Diane

ok so pretty much what ur saying is if I feel hungry done go directly for the chips, maybe eat some fruit, veggies, or like a bagel or something like that? Would a small amount if trail mix be healthy if you have a sweet tooth instead of candy?
