Cate's Diary

Hi, LaMa. It was a lovely, lazy day. I did a little gardening, read, had a yummy salad for lunch, read some more & then decided I had better go for a walk.
I didn't see any snakes ( or wallabies). G just rang & he was delayed due to a fire on the back road he takes. He has to detour a long way. There was a helicopter water-bombing. It is so, so dry. In our bush it's crunchy underfoot.

Apparently they had 3 water-bombing helicopters & numerous fire trucks. It doesn't seem to be a watch and act alert, so hopefully it's under control. It's about 20 km from here.
I'm having a bit of a hungry day & just had a few nuts that put me a little over my calories. They were very nice! If only nuts were low in calories!

:frown: about the fires - I mean the ones near you, but all of them, of course.

I trust by now the hungry day has turned into a calm, restful night of uninterrupted, restorative sleep!

Cate we tried halo top and didnt like it . Skinny cow was ok don’t know if you have that . Maybe you should make some icecream.
Oh the fires are near you I didn’t realise they were so close . I hope you continue to get out and about a little and it all improves soon .
Nuts at least are good for you so hopefully they helped the hunger

That does sound lovely!

Hi, Amy, Petal, Liza, LaMa & Em. I don't think I'll bother with the halo top then. I probably need to steer clear of ice-cream altogether I think. With the fruit I eat I am already having quite enough sugar & I would rather eat fruit.
I had a lovely night's sleep & it just rained a little & more is forecast for today.
The fires have not been near us & the one 20km away only started yesterday afternoon. I don't think it could get to us anyway as there are lots of farms between here & it. Hopefully, it will be put out by rain today. It feels like it will rain nicely. It has stopped again now, but fingers crossed.
Em- I'm not reading anything at the moment as I have run out of library books & have re-read a few of my novels. I do like reading books set in Tasmania & re-read "The Lighthouse Keeper's Wife" by Karen Viggers. Bruny Island is a fascinating, broody island & our younger son has a block there. This is a somewhat broody & interesting story. The Lightkeeper's Wife by Karen Viggers
I'll let you know if I read a really good book soon. I have 2 ready to pick up from the library.

Yesterday-

Please don't count on having farms in between to stop fires, there was lots of farms between the initial fire and Cobargo also, mostly dairy.

:( I know, unfortunately Tru. When it comes to fire anything can happen.
I have got my 5000 in already, with a walk right down to the back of the bush. I stirred up 10 hoppers :) but couldn't get a photo of any of them.

It's raining on Kangaroo Island now - not sure how much. Have you seen the news story/video about the Davis family, who survived, but the fire goes right over their home? So much to note there, including how their pump kept going, and Mrs Davis ascribing the length of time the men were able to stay in the house (it eventually went) to her having put in special thick double-glazed German-specs window-glass. I'd want to know the brand of pump they were using for sure.

That's good news about the rain on Kangaroo Island , Amy. I would love to know what brand pump too.
G & I need a small generator, pump & tank for the back of our ute. I'll check them out in the next week. When we do small burnoffs it would be very handy.

Some rain is definitely a whole lot better than no rain. It refreshes things. I hope Amy that KI get more than expected. We got a lovely rain. I think it would be enough to put out the fire that was only 20km away if they got the same. It is still raining. It's lovely!

they had 3 water-bombing helicopter
When I was in college I worked summers for the US Forest Service and did a fair amount of firefighting. I was once on a particularly hot blowup in Idaho trying to get things under control and took a direct hit from one of those helicopter water bombs. A lot of force behind it, knocked me flat and stunned me a bit, but the water sure felt good. We lost that one, neither our fireline nor the water bombs could stop it, we were lucky to get out in one piece that day. My hair got pretty well singed.

Even a small amount of rain makes a big difference with wildfires, even a cooler more humid day helps, but it will dry and heat up again your fire season is still just beginning. Be safe, wish I could send you some of our snow.

Rob- That direct hit must have been a hell of a shock. The water-bombing is incredibly effective on most of our fires. They seem to be able to really pinpoint the hot spots. I have nothing but admiration for firefighters. They do an amazing job.
This rain is really steady now & has been going for over 2 hours. It will fill our tanks I reckon. I think it's fairly widespread over Tassie. I hope so anyway.
Edit: the closest fire is out!

Good to hear about the rain and the fire going out . I won’t complain about rain here again.
