Marsia's Diary

All sounds good Marsia . I'm going to make a big effort this week to not eat huge amount of carbs . Might go back to tracking on my mfp have been bad about that and I did well when I did .

I thought indigestible carbs could be deducted from the total? That´d make staying regular less of a problem.
What are indigestible carbs LaMa

I used to eat a ton of veggies a day, so this is a huge decrease for me, and I think maybe it'll take a while for my body to get used to. For instance, I ate about 1/2 cup (60g) of refried beans today that I am not supposed to have because that is 18g of carbs minus 6g of fiber, so 12g of net carbs. So you can see how it could be super easy to get to your total net carbs before even finishing breakfast! So I plan to stick to the less strict low carb standards of eating less than 75g of net carbs a day unless that makes my weight loss plateau, and then I'll try for the full on restrictive 20g max of keto if I have to. Because of your question, I just looked up unhulled sesame seeds which I used to eat if I wasn't regular, and they look like a good solution because about half of their carbs are indigestible carbs, so that is really great!

The weeks I did badly tracking my calories or didn't measure my portions, I usually didn't lose weight. I am so bad at guestimating how much I am eating! I actually like tracking calories, because if I can track carefully throughout the day, I can eat really filling things before I run out of calories for the day and then not crash later. I kind of think of it like a video game where you fuel up on healthy filling stuff while you have bonus points left to spend. Actually this weight loss thing would make a good video game!

If you can reach your goals with the "simpler" approach that sounds good to me :)

Marsia, I just bought a bike! I went yesterday and it was sooo fun! But I am not burning many cals??? I only burned 200. maybe I am going too slow... I biked 5.5 miles. Oh well, I don't care that much. It was still super fun. :)

Congrats on your weight loss! It's an incredible thing since it's just so darn hard to lose weight!

Your trip sounds like a dream ...

Thanks Jenni! I am so happy I found something that could work for me long-term and that I can do without fighting cravings!

Same with me with the bike so far. I burn about 200 calories a half hour of biking on relatively flat ground and about 225 on hilly ground because I coasted a lot on the downhills. With the My Fitness Pal exercise estimator, I put that I did an hour of light bike riding at 10-12 mph and it said that I burned 526 calories. So that's not a lot more than the Fitbit estimated for that day (which was my first day off-roading through the woods on trails) where it said I burned 448 calories. I did coast downhill a lot and had to go slow so my daughter with shorter legs and a littler bike than me could keep up. I am looking at the report for that exercise activity period now and it shows the average heart rate, # of minutes in cardio mode, and # of minutes in fat burn mode. I also notice it didn't count it as any steps taken, but it did count it as active minutes. It shows that I burned an average of 8 calories a minute. So I agree, it must measure how high you get your heart rate and how far you go.

I just got the Fitbit and it is still a mystery to me how it measures things. For example, last night I wanted to go to bed, but needed around 1,000 steps to reach the 10,000 step goal, so I ran up and down my steps (16 of them) about 15 times (so that's about 480 steps) but it recorded around 1,000 steps and buzzed that I met my goal for the day. I wonder if it records the elevated heart rate and shows it as more "steps" than a normal walking pace? One thing I notice is that the greater the range of motion for an activity, the more calories it tends to burn because you are working out all your muscles at once instead of a select few. Like stair stepper doesn't burn anywhere near the calories as jogging.

But anyway, biking is really fun, so I don't care that much about the number of calories burned. I know we will slowly get to the point where we'll buy mountain bikes and get so biking is a real workout, and in the mean time, it does burn a fair amount of calories for how fun it is!

I am savoring researching things to do on the trip! We have been to Kauai before and there is just so much to do there as far as hiking and exploring that we barely scratched the surface last time. So really looking forward to it. It is up there on the list of most amazing places I have ever been!

Good luck with the biking! I think as we get stronger biking legs, the calories will burn right off!!

I'm going to try biking but probably now won't be able to until weekend after next . I'm hoping it's something husband and I will try together .

My friend has a fit bit and he told me it records arm movements as steps saynlike brushing your teeth if you use that arm . But I don't know really .

That´s the only thing it can do, given that it´s on your wrist. Plus heart rate for activity rate and possibly gps for distance? . I imagine you swung your arms faster while running up/down the stairs, thus skewing the step results.

Darn, I cheated. Well, good to know and made up for it today. Thanks for telling me so I can put it on my ankle next time or something like that!

I read that a lady who knits doesn't like the Fitbit because it racks up steps while she knits, so she has to take it off. So LaMa's explanation makes perfect sense!

I really hope your husband likes biking with you. That would be so nice! When I first started dating my husband, we would go for nighttime jogs in this neighborhood with big trees that were lit up by the street lights and it was so nice jogging together in the beautiful dark! Really nice memory, and wish we still did things like that!

Maybe you can remind him how much you enjoyed that?

Interesting info about the fitbit and using arms ... I have an Apple watch-wonder if it's the same way? I think it uses a GPS, though. I will have to look it up.

Ahhh ... a quick google search reveals that indeed it does use arm movement unless im in one of the workout modes, and then it uses gps...

I’m currently sitting in my car . My watch says 4289 steps . I will be driving for about 10 mins soon so will check it when I arrive at my destination before I get out of the car . Let’s see what happens .

It should be able to tell you're driving, not running, from movement patterns and heart rate.
