Can I do this for the rest of my life?

Kind of a weird title for a diet diary but if I want to break the cycle of starting all Gung ho, struggling for a few weeks or months with a new diet and exercise regime then giving up I need to start asking myself that question before I make changes.

For right now I'm going to concentrate on:
Taking my vitamins, BP medicine and supplements
Exercising 30 minutes a day
No sugar

Since I'm only 2 weeks into this and excited I can and will do more but those are the three I need to do and be accountable for. Once they are established I will add more.

Hi ShariLee,

Welcome to the forum. It is always nice to 'meet' a fellow Canadian. There are lots of nice and supportive people here.

I think we all ask ourselves the question that you named your diary. The key is to find a healthy lifestyle that works for you that you can maintain for the rest of your life. Easier said than done as then there wouldn't be forums like this out there-haha.

Small, doable steps is a good thing. You are on the right path.

Hi ShariLee & welcome to the forum. That's a great name for your diary. I wasted(?) years of my life yo-yoing with my weight. It's crazy to think we can go on some crazy diet & then go back to eating as we did before, without there being any consequences. Once you realise it should be a long-term plan then it's best to choose something that is sustainable. Cheers, Cate

Thanks for the welcome Cowboy and Cate. I'm so glad I found this site.

Today was a good day. I ate well and did my Cardio workout this morning. Later I needed to go to the store so I walked instead of driving. Tonight I walked 6 k with a friend. We're going to try to get out every night. I used to (like 20 yrs ag) walk every night and I miss it.

I love walking! Just getting outside & putting one foot in front of the other is a very therapeutic thing :)

Dirty Thirty weight workout is done!

Didn't sleep well last night. Every time I rolled over I woke up. My legs were sore from my walk last night. Mostly quads. Last week it was my shins with less walking so I guess that's progress. :)

Scale is up today. My rational side knows it's water retention from lactic acid but my emotional side is pissed lol

Did weights yesterday and felt much better after that. Feel great today. I'm heading out for a walk shortly. The sun is out and it's too nice a day to be stuck inside.

My weight went up another lb. I know I didn't eat an extra 3500 calories yesterday so it's just water weight but it's getting me down. I may need to put the scale away for a bit. I'm letting a number affect me too much and I can feel myself moving towards f*** it mode.

I'm eating much better than I was a few weeks ago, exercising, taking my vitamins etc. I just need to give it time. I need to decide on the next positive changes to make now that these are fairly ingrained into my lifestyle.

I went for an hour long power walk this afternoon. I feel much better now. I have 11 days til this 30 day challenge is done. I'm going to stay off the scale until then.

Funny when I hit my goal the first time I spent a lot of time on the scale to see once I reached goal. When I gained some weight back and decided enough was enough- I stepped on the scale again to see how much I had gained. I haven't stepped on it since. How do I know I am back at my goal? I can feel it- in my clothes and in how I feel and look. I hated that scale some weeks. So I decided to take the scale out of the equation and try something else. This second bout of weight loss has been a much better experience. If the scale stresses you out, then don't use it until you need to. Go on how your clothes fit and feel.

Thanks Cowboy. I have been noticing changes in my clothes which I think just added to the frustration with the scale. I started wondering if I was seeing changes that weren't there. I must confess that I did hop on this morning and finally saw a loss.

I'm adding 2 more positive changes to my list starting Monday. They will be centered on the scale and alcohol. I just need to figure out what I want the parameters to be.

Have a great day everyone. Today is supposed to be Sunny turning to rain for tonight and tomorrow so I want to get out for a nice long walk again

Hi, Sharilee, if you are feeling a change with your clothes then things are going well. Our weight fluctuates so much that it really is best to weigh no more than once a week. Once a month is even better. I hope you get that walk in. It's bucketing down here!

The scales should be the least important measure of success, the way you feel, the way your clothes fit, inches or centimetres lost and improvements in health are all more important than just a number.

Got out for just over an hour walk with a friend. It was just over 6 km at a 10:17 min/km. Usually we walk a bit faster but we were gabbing.

Ate a bit too much at dinner but it was all healthy food. Pork loin roast, 1/2 a sweet potato and roasted veggies (broccoli, cauliflower and baby carrots)

Overall it's been a doodle day for a Saturday :)

I'm having a good Sunday morning. I've been doing some prep work for the wèek. I've got a big salad made plus cut up some veggies to grab for snacks. Right now I'm making little frittatos for breakfasts.

I want to get out later for another good long walk.

Oh and drum roll..... I did not step on the scale today. :)

Just got back from a walk/run. I did 4.5 km in 41:55 which works out to a 9:11 min/km pace. My fastest km was 8:34. I've been wanting to try running again so very happy.

Win/win :D No scales, walking, running & healthy food. Well done ShariLee. Yes, you can do this!

Thanks Cate. No scales again this morning :). I noticed this morning that my muffin top with the pants I'm wearing today is almost gone. I didn't have to do any artful arranging with my top to hide any bulges.

I've caught myself grazing leftovers after dinner the last 2 nights. Not because I was hungry, just because it was there. This will be my new lifestyle change that I will work on with the no weighing.

No more muffin top? Sounds like you're on the right track! Nice to have you on board, ShariLee :)

My lowest was 100 lbs until I was 27 yrs . Now I am 48 yrs . This is the last time I will start weightloss program
