The Hidden Reason Losing Weight Gets Harder
When my doctor looked at my blood test and pointed out that my HbA1c had reached 6.0 percent, I initially focused on one thing: losing weight. But the more I read about blood sugar regulation, the more I realised that the number on the scale was only part of the story. What really caught my attention was a condition I had heard about many times but never fully understood—insulin resistance.
It quickly became clear that millions of people may be living with insulin resistance without knowing it. They exercise regularly, feel reasonably healthy and may not even be particularly overweight. What Does Insulin Actually Do?
Every time we eat carbohydrates, they are broken down into glucose, which enters the bloodstream. Glucose is the body's preferred energy source, especially for the brain and muscles. However, glucose cannot simply move from the bloodstream into most cells on its own. It requires the help of insulin.
Insulin is a hormone produced by specialised beta cells in the pancreas. Its primary role is to act like a biological key. When insulin binds to receptors on muscle, liver and fat cells, it signals those cells to absorb glucose from the bloodstream. The glucose can then be used immediately as energy or stored for later use.
In healthy individuals this process is remarkably efficient. After a meal, blood glucose rises slightly, insulin is released, cells respond quickly and blood sugar gradually returns to its normal range. The entire process happens automatically without us noticing.
What Happens During Insulin Resistance?
Insulin resistance develops when the body's cells gradually become less responsive to insulin's signal. Imagine trying to unlock a door with a key that no longer fits perfectly. The key still works, but it takes much more effort before the door finally opens.
The pancreas responds by producing even more insulin in an attempt to keep blood glucose under control. For quite some time this strategy works remarkably well. Blood sugar levels may still appear almost normal because insulin levels remain chronically elevated. That is one reason insulin resistance often develops silently over many years.
Eventually, however, the pancreas may no longer be able to keep up with the increasing demand. Blood glucose begins to rise more consistently, HbA1c increases and the risk of developing prediabetes and eventually type 2 diabetes becomes significantly higher.
Why It Often Goes Undetected
One of the most surprising aspects of insulin resistance is that it rarely causes obvious symptoms during its early stages. Many people assume they would immediately notice if something was wrong with their metabolism. In reality, the opposite is often true.
Someone can continue working, exercising, travelling and living a completely normal life while insulin resistance slowly progresses. This is why regular medical check-ups become increasingly important with age. Measurements such as fasting blood glucose, HbA1c and other metabolic markers often reveal problems long before symptoms appear.
The Connection Between Belly Fat and Insulin Resistance
Researchers have found that visceral fat—the fat stored deep inside the abdomen around internal organs—is much more than an energy reserve. It is metabolically active tissue that releases hormones and inflammatory substances capable of influencing insulin sensitivity throughout the body.
As visceral fat increases, insulin resistance often becomes more pronounced. At the same time, insulin resistance can make it more difficult for the body to regulate appetite, store nutrients efficiently and lose abdominal fat. This creates a vicious cycle in which one problem reinforces the other.
Fortunately, this cycle is not irreversible. Research consistently shows that even modest weight loss, regular physical activity and improved nutrition can significantly improve insulin sensitivity. In many individuals, losing only five to ten percent of their body weight already produces measurable improvements in blood glucose regulation.

This does not happen overnight, nor is there a single miracle solution. Instead, several small improvements often work together to produce meaningful results over time.
Weight loss, particularly the reduction of visceral fat, is one of the most effective strategies. Even losing five to ten percent of body weight has been shown to improve blood sugar regulation in many people. Regular physical activity, especially a combination of strength training and walking or other aerobic exercise, also helps muscles absorb glucose more efficiently.
The Role of Nutrition
There is no single diet that works for everyone. Mediterranean eating patterns, lower-carbohydrate approaches and balanced calorie-controlled diets can all improve metabolic health when they are sustainable over the long term. The common factor is not perfection but consistency.
My own experience taught me that meal timing and food choices can make a noticeable difference. Intermittent fasting helped me avoid unnecessary snacking and naturally reduced my daily calorie intake without constantly feeling deprived. I also developed the habit of eating protein first, followed by vegetables and healthy fats before consuming carbohydrates. While this approach may not be necessary for everyone, it helped me feel fuller for longer and made it much easier to control my appetite.
Scientific studies suggest that eating protein and fibre before carbohydrate-rich foods may reduce the post-meal rise in blood glucose in some individuals. However, this should be viewed as one possible strategy rather than a universal rule. Overall dietary quality, total calorie intake and long-term adherence remain far more important than any single nutritional technique.
Exercise Is Medicine—But Not a Free Pass
Exercise remains one of the most powerful tools for improving insulin sensitivity. During and after physical activity, muscles require glucose as fuel, allowing them to remove sugar from the bloodstream more efficiently. Resistance training helps preserve and build muscle mass, while aerobic exercise improves cardiovascular health and metabolic flexibility.
However, exercise cannot completely compensate for an unhealthy lifestyle. Many people overestimate the number of calories burned during a workout while underestimating the effects of poor nutrition, chronic stress, prolonged sitting and inadequate sleep. Long-term health depends on the combination of all these factors rather than any one of them alone.
Sleep and Stress Matter More Than Most People Realise
Chronic sleep deprivation and long-term psychological stress can both reduce insulin sensitivity. Poor sleep affects hormones involved in hunger regulation, increases cravings for high-calorie foods and makes recovery from exercise less effective. Elevated stress hormones such as cortisol may further complicate glucose regulation in susceptible individuals.
I freely admit that sleep remains my weakest health habit. Most nights I sleep no more than six hours. Although I have successfully maintained my weight loss, I know that improving my sleep would almost certainly benefit both my recovery and my long-term metabolic health.
When Should You Speak to Your Doctor?
Insulin resistance usually develops silently, which makes regular health checks increasingly important with age. Anyone with excess abdominal fat, elevated blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, a family history of type 2 diabetes or increasing HbA1c values should discuss appropriate screening with their healthcare professional. Early intervention often makes lifestyle changes more effective and may delay or even prevent the development of type 2 diabetes.

Insulin resistance is not simply about blood sugar. It is a warning that the body's metabolism is becoming less efficient at handling glucose. Fortunately, it is also one of the metabolic conditions most strongly influenced by everyday lifestyle choices.
