The doctor looked at my long-therm blood sugar level
A routine blood test changed the way I thought about fitness. I had been physically active for years, walked long distances, trained with weights and felt stronger than many men my age. Yet I still carried a noticeable amount of fat around my waist. Strength had clearly improved my fitness, but it had not solved the problem I saw every morning in the mirror.
Then my doctor looked at my long-term blood sugar level. My HbA1c was 6.0 percent, which meant that my average blood glucose had been higher than it should have been. He warned me that if I did not lose at least two kilograms, we would have to discuss treating me as a diabetic. I had not expected that conversation. I exercised regularly, did not consider myself seriously overweight and certainly did not feel ill. Nevertheless, my blood test was telling a different story.
That warning became a turning point. Instead of searching for another workout or trying to burn more calories in the gym, I began paying much closer attention to when I ate, what I ate and in which order I ate it. Intermittent fasting helped me more than I had expected. It gave my day a clear structure and made it easier to eat less without spending every hour thinking about food.
I also changed the order of my meals. I usually began with protein and vegetables and ate carbohydrate-rich foods afterwards, if I ate them at all. I was no longer starting a meal with bread, pasta, potatoes or something sweet. For me, this simple routine made controlling my appetite much easier. Over approximately eight months, I lost between eight and ten kilograms. More importantly, I have maintained my new weight without feeling that I am permanently dieting.
This is my personal experience, not a claim that everyone must follow the same eating pattern. Intermittent fasting is not magic, and eating protein before carbohydrates does not cancel out an excessive calorie intake. But my experience forced me to ask a question that concerns many active people: How can someone become stronger, train regularly and still carry stubborn belly fat?
Strength and leanness are not the same thing
Building muscle and losing body fat are related, but they are not identical processes. Progressive strength training gives the body a reason to preserve or build muscle. Fat loss, however, still depends largely on the balance between the energy consumed and the energy used over time. A person can become considerably stronger while eating enough to maintain the same amount of body fat—or even gain more.
This is one reason the bathroom scale can be misleading. Someone may gain muscle, lose a small amount of fat and remain at almost the same weight. Waist circumference, clothing fit and changes in body composition can therefore reveal more than body weight alone. At the same time, visible abdominal fat is not merely a cosmetic issue. Where fat is stored can matter as much as how much fat a person carries.
Belly fat is not all the same
The soft layer that can be pinched beneath the skin is known as subcutaneous fat. Visceral fat lies deeper inside the abdomen and surrounds internal organs. It cannot be judged precisely by looking in the mirror, and a person does not need to appear severely overweight to carry an unhealthy amount of it.
Visceral fat is metabolically active. It is associated with inflammatory processes, fat accumulation in the liver and reduced sensitivity to insulin. That does not mean every centimetre around the waist directly causes diabetes. Genetics, age, activity, diet, sleep and overall body composition all play a role. Nevertheless, an expanding waistline can be an important warning sign, particularly when it appears together with elevated blood glucose, blood pressure or blood lipids.
What an HbA1c result actually shows
A fasting glucose test is a snapshot taken at one moment. HbA1c provides a broader view because it reflects average blood glucose over roughly the previous two to three months. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, an HbA1c result from 5.7 to 6.4 percent falls within the prediabetes range, while diabetes is generally diagnosed from 6.5 percent. A diagnosis should not be based on self-interpretation, however, because physicians may repeat testing and consider other results and individual circumstances.
My result of 6.0 percent therefore did not mean that I already had type 2 diabetes. It meant that my glucose regulation was no longer ideal and that ignoring it would have been a poor decision. Prediabetes often produces no obvious symptoms. A person can feel energetic, continue training and even become stronger while metabolic changes are developing quietly in the background.
Insulin resistance: the problem behind the number
After carbohydrates are digested, glucose enters the bloodstream. The pancreas releases insulin, a hormone that helps muscle, fat and liver cells take up or store that glucose. In a metabolically healthy body, the system responds efficiently. Insulin rises when necessary, glucose is moved out of the blood and levels later fall again.
With insulin resistance, cells no longer respond as effectively to insulin’s signal. The pancreas compensates by producing more insulin to keep blood glucose within an acceptable range. This compensation may work for years, which is why a person can have insulin resistance before routine glucose values become clearly abnormal. Eventually, the pancreas may struggle to keep up, glucose remains elevated for longer and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases.
This also explains why the issue cannot be reduced to a lack of willpower. Hunger, energy levels, food choices, muscle mass, liver fat, sleep and everyday movement interact with one another. Strength training is valuable because active muscle can use glucose and generally supports insulin sensitivity. But several workouts per week cannot always compensate for excessive energy intake, abdominal fat, long periods of sitting and poor recovery. Becoming stronger was an important part of my health, but it was not the entire answer.
Sleep: The Health Factor I Still Need to Improve
One area where I know I still have room for improvement is sleep. Most nights I get no more than six hours, even though scientific evidence consistently shows that adults who regularly sleep seven to nine hours recover better from exercise, regulate their appetite more effectively and generally maintain healthier metabolic function. A lack of sleep does not automatically cause weight gain, but it can make healthy choices far more difficult. Hunger hormones become less balanced, cravings often increase and recovery from training slows down.
Despite sleeping less than I should, the changes I made to my eating habits were enough to help me lose weight and keep it off. That certainly does not mean sleep is unimportant. On the contrary, I often wonder how much easier the process might have been if I had consistently slept an extra hour or two every night.
The Hidden Calorie Burner Most People Never Think About
One of the biggest surprises during my own journey was discovering that fitness is determined by much more than structured workouts. Researchers use the term NEAT, which stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. It describes all the calories we burn through everyday movement outside planned exercise sessions.
Walking to the supermarket, climbing stairs, gardening, cleaning the house, carrying groceries, standing while working or simply moving around more during the day all contribute to NEAT. Individually these activities may seem insignificant, but together they can make a remarkable difference. Some people naturally burn several hundred additional calories every day simply because they move more throughout the day. Others complete an excellent one-hour workout but spend the remaining twenty-three hours sitting. In that situation, total daily energy expenditure may still be surprisingly low.
This was another lesson that changed my perspective. Exercise is essential for building strength, improving cardiovascular fitness and supporting healthy ageing, but what happens during the rest of the day is just as important.
Small Changes Became Sustainable Habits
Looking back, none of the changes I made were extreme. I did not follow a fashionable crash diet, eliminate every carbohydrate or spend hours doing cardio every day. Instead, I gradually built routines that felt realistic enough to maintain for years rather than weeks.
Intermittent fasting reduced unnecessary snacking. Beginning meals with protein helped me stay full for longer. Daily walks increased my overall activity without feeling like another workout. Strength training preserved muscle while I lost fat. Most importantly, these habits became part of my lifestyle instead of feeling like temporary restrictions. That is probably why maintaining my weight has been easier than losing it.
Fitness Is About Far More Than Appearance
Many people judge success by what they see in the mirror. Visible abdominal muscles are often presented on social media as the ultimate sign of health. Real health, however, is considerably more complex. Blood pressure, long-term blood glucose, cholesterol levels, muscle mass, mobility, cardiovascular fitness and mental well-being all contribute to long-term health. Someone with visible abs is not automatically metabolically healthy, just as a person carrying some belly fat is not automatically unhealthy.
For me, my doctor's warning about my HbA1c was far more important than any number on the scale. It shifted my focus away from simply looking leaner and towards becoming metabolically healthier.
The Bottom Line
If you are getting stronger in the gym but still struggling with stubborn belly fat, you are certainly not alone. Strength training remains one of the best investments you can make in your health, but it is only one piece of a much larger puzzle. Nutrition, sleep, stress, daily movement, age, genetics and metabolic health all influence where your body stores fat and how easily it lets it go.
My own journey began with an unexpected conversation about blood sugar. Eight months later, I had lost around ten kilograms without feeling constantly hungry, and maintaining that weight has proved surprisingly manageable. The experience reminded me that lasting progress rarely comes from miracle workouts or restrictive diets. More often, it comes from improving everyday habits that you can realistically maintain for years.
If there is one lesson I would pass on to anyone in the same situation, it is this: do not judge your health only by your strength or by the reflection in the mirror. Sometimes the most important improvements are happening inside your body long before they become visible on the outside.
